The first task in my decision-making process in designing Stage One of my lesson was to determine which unit I would choose to work with. I chose a new unit for my eleventh grade English language arts class. I chose it because it is a challenging unit that matches my state’s content standards. Next, I looked over the standards and unpacked them by focusing on the “big ideas” in the unit. By unpacking the standards, I was able to concentrate on the desired results of the unit. There are numerous standards that need to be met in a set amount of time. It was overwhelming to sift through the standards. However, when I begin unpacking the standards I was able to break them down into “big ideas” and feasible chunks. Another challenge I faced was the vagueness of the standards. The standards are wordy and vague. However, when I unpacked them, I was able to pick out the “big ideas” and my desired results for the standards.  Translating standards into big ideas? At first, I found the task of translating standards into big ideas intimidating. After all, there are vast amounts of standards, which are long, wordy, and ambiguous. However, once I asked myself Wiggins and McTighe’s (2011) guiding question, “What should students learn as a result of this unit (short term and long term)?” (p. 46).
