The decisions we make in our daily lives can have a profound effect on our lives. Many times, without much thought we make a choice never realizing the effect that particular choice may have on our future and consequently the impact it may have on others. In the political career of Carlo DeMaria, Mayor of the city of Everett, Massachusetts, that decision came on a day when he was a sophomore at Northeastern University in the city of Boston. Enrolled as a criminal justice major at Northeastern, Mr. DeMaria had his eye on a career in the world of law enforcement with a particular interest in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In 1993, while in need of a six-month co-op to fulfill his college requirements, he was approached by a local …show more content…
Elected Mayor in November of 2007, he continues to live by the same philosophy of the twenty-year-old college student who won his first election in 1994, that of helping others, listening to people and giving back to the community that has placed their trust in him for over 23 years. When I asked the Mayor if his education at Northeastern had prepared him for the job, he replied “I don’t think any education prepares you to be a Mayor” he went on to explain accordingly, that there are many areas within governing the city that require the knowledge he gained in business and financial classes which consequently serve him well in the dollars and sense aspect of leadership, but that ultimately the job of Mayor is “providing service to humans”. The Mayor states “Textbooks are great for teaching the basics of government, and all of us should study and understand the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence, but what I deal with on a daily basis are quality of life issues for the citizens of Everett”. On any given day, you will find the Mayor dealing with a range of issues; from the extreme heartbreak of opioid addiction to a neighborhood dog barking incessantly. “The 1st key person a citizen will turn to is their Mayor”, accordingly helping the person that reaches out is what encourages Carlo DeMaria to be the best that he can be.
When asked about the biggest challenges in his position, his thoughts turned to city budgets, “You want to do so
In larger cities and metropolitan areas it is important for the leader to be experienced in conducting business on a larger scale than the city alone. Elected mayors are politically motivated, but representative of the voting population and
The decision-making process occurs at all levels of management. However, the top executive managers, middle level managers, and front line managers are responsible for guiding the decision making process within their healthcare organizations (Liebler & McConnell, 2008,p.148). CEO’s are responsible for guiding the actions and behaviors of their employees to collectively achieve the organization’s goals. The mission and vision statement are the foundation of what direction the healthcare agency is heading. The CEO and top level executives are responsible for developing code of ethics and code of conduct to align with accreditation, licensing, and federal and state laws.
“I don’t want to say that you can forget about this generation or the generation before us, but if we’re going to solve the problem, we’ve got to get into the heads and the minds and the hearts of our young people, and it’s going to take all of us to do that.” The political leaders want to help the city and they need everyone’s help to do.
“It was time, I thought, for someone to stand up for what’s right; and it might as well be me.” Ivan Allen Jr. wrote these words in a journal just days after the Atlanta mayoral election of 1961. Allen Jr. made the decision early on in his political career to base his choice-making not on the polls, but on his own moral values. He possessed a certain quiet strength that made him an admirable character in the political scene. His fortitude of character and bravery enabled him to become one of the most impactful mayors in our nation’s history.
For the example in this memo, I will be focusing on the funding of educational programs. As you are aware, 38% of the property taxes fund school programs such as athletics, arts, and all day kindergarten. Due to the great recession, property values here in the Knoxtown area were greatly affected and a majority of properties lost nearly 50% of their assessed value. A significant portion of our constituents also lost their homes. Due in some part to these two factors, our projected revenue was not met. The overall revenue for the city was down 42% resulting in a serious budget shortfall. The loss of these property taxes resulted in the cutting of many school programs. The children of our constituents not have fewer athletic and arts programs to choose from as well as eliminating full day kindergarten for the next term. If corrections to the budget are not made, some bus services and reduced lunch programs will also be eliminated.
On Monday, April 13th, 2009, I visited the Culver City city council meeting, and found that they operate using a council-manager form of government. For a city with a population of about 38,000, this type of governmental structure is fairly common, and I was not surprised to see it in action in a community where the median household income is around $56,000 a year. Culver City is also a culturally rich community with a 60 percent Caucasian population, and a quarter of the residents are either of African American or Asian decent. The mayor, D. Scott Malsin, is one of five members on the council, and his term as mayor is on a rotating basis. Having been to a Hermosa Beach city council meeting with a similar council-manager structure, I knew
Most decisions are made with analysis, but some are judgment calls not susceptible to analysis due to time or information constraints. Please write about a judgment call you’ve made recently that couldn’t be analyzed. It can be a big or small one, but should focus on a business issue. What was the situation, the alternatives you considered and evaluated, and your decision making process? Be sure to explain why you chose the alternative you did relative to others considered.
A reoccurring conflict throughout this case assessment is the mayor’s ignorance to the policies that he is
Mayor Turner aims, helped the community by improving roads to help drivers maintain their car’s alignment, helped the homelessness community and reduced flooding. Mayor Turner accomplished his aims and plans to continue to improve his aims
The mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford, has been through a lot in the past couple of months as a result he realizes that being the mayor of Toronto is not easy. Therefore, the question is then reconsidered of whether Rob Ford should still be mayor of Toronto? This essay will compare a speech given by Rob Ford on June 30, 2014 at City Hall in Toronto. This speech is for the citizens of Toronto and anyone who he had offended, he then apologized for his actions and also to compare an editorial by The Star, written on Thursday May 01, 2014. This editorial is trying to target citizens of Toronto and trying to make them see that Rob Ford isn’t fit to be mayor and that he should just resign. The speech and editorial are both trying to reach the audience in an effective way. This will be shown by comparing the tone, appeal and rhetorical devices.
In conclusion, Mayor Miller will have to make a wise decision on whether to sustain Steelers plan or recreate a new plan to help the city of Stoughton. The mayor might have to cut back from the list of capital expenses. Due to the various complex task from the project, the mayor have to view the pros and cons when making the decision. A decision to whether build a new city hall will need to be considered. The city is in debt and need recovery.
"The mayor for the first time is listening, listening very carefully to leaders in the community. He's listening very carefully to former students and parents in the community," said Kevin Peterson, executive director of the New Democracy Coalition.
The mayor should step up and take responsibility, work hard, get his hands dirty, and not stand aside. It is the girls who are suffering."
The rational decision-making model describes a series of steps that decision makers should consider if their goal is to maximize the quality of their outcome. In other words, if you want to make sure that you make the best choice, going through the formal steps of the rational decision-making model may make sense. The following are the steps taken to come to a rational decision: 1. Identify the problem, 2. Establish decision criteria, 3. Weigh decision criteria, 4. Generate alternatives, 5. Evaluate the alternative, 6. Choose the best alternative, 7. Implement the decision, 8. Evaluate the decision.
The decision we make on our own and the surroundings that we are exposed to make us who we are. The actions we make weather if it is good or bad, we still have a choice to determine them. We thousands of choices every day that may express us, but we are all human beings and we are not any different. Some choices we make may seem easy but some are more difficult to decide because it may change drastically who we actually are. The decisions we make in life could be anything such as, relationships, deciding which path to go to, and family etc. I am going to tell a story about someone who had the most difficult time in her life and how she is able to pass all of the obstacles. Reminding myself the story that I know, inspires me to do better every single day. Weather if my decisions are good or bad, I should not let others people judgmental words affect me and the choices I make are what makes me who I am. There was a girl named Erica and I knew her because she was my neighbor. Now, Erica lives happily and she is now a successful filmmaker. Her best friend told me her story about the life she lives in and what she has gone through. She told me how everything around her affects her and the choices she has made to get where she is at. Erica made choices that are good or bad, but in the end, she learns from her mistakes. Erica had a difficult time growing up such as being surrounded by negativity, her stepfather abusing her, and lastly doing drugs.
