Synthesis Every employee is hired with a certain set of skills, knowledge, and abilities that match or closely match the role and responsibilities for a specific position. It is inevitable that roles and responsibilities for a position are going to change; especially when an organization changes to remain competitive. When those changes do occur, the employer has a corporate social responsibility to invest in their human capital. It certainly should not be the responsibility of the employee to invest his or her own resources for professional development (Constatine, 2012, para. 2). Before going further, we should define what professional development is. Professional development is the process of improving and increasing capabilities of staff through access to education and training opportunities in the workplace, through outside organization, or through watching others perform the job. Professional development helps build and maintain morale of staff members, and is thought to attract higher quality staff to an organization. There are benefits to developing employees, but there …show more content…
The cost to a company is illustrated with the following hypothetical situation. Bob is a manager with Techtron Industries earning a salary of $75,000 a year. Bob has been with Techtron in the same position for 6 years and during that time has seen several senior managers leave and be replaced by individuals hired from outside the organization. In the past year, Bob had expressed an interest in two of these positions that became available when senior managers left Techtron, but was told he was not qualified for either position. Bob has come to the realization because Techtron does not invest in the development of its human capital, he will never be promoted and begins looking for opportunities

For many of us, self-improvement has taken on a central role in our lives. Part of the thought behind how we want to live our lives includes looking at the habits and lifestyles of people who have the same kind of values that we want to meet. Employers may also prefer to hire people who will take initiative to grow and develop their skills in years to come. Development involves reviewing and determining the various attributes of an individual as well as the opportunities available for development. In order to enhance the full development of a person, there are certain activities that can be completed toward efficient development. Whether development is to better yourself, better yourself in your current position or get a new position, there are many things to be considered. First you should think about the skills and knowledge required for development based on your professional goal. In some cases you may need to think about a desired position and technological requirements. The requirements specific to your goal will help lead you in the direction that is proper to reach your professional development goals.

Just as the “Why Professional Development Matters” article mentions, I believe the best PD occurs when educators can both immediately apply the information and knowledge they gain, and when it personally interests them. In my district, we have a co-facilitated committee that operates, much like a learning team the article discussed, to review what professional development we will implement, as well as when, and how. Last year, they implemented a new strategy for PD. We had an inservice day at the beginning of the school year. Months prior to this day, the co-facilitated committee sent out an email survey. In this survey, they asked teachers and staff what their interests were, and what they specifically would like PD about. They developed all of the PD sessions for the beginning of the year based on the data from the survey results. They then sent out another form with all of the sessions, and staff was able to choose their top three choices for what sessions they wanted to attend. This strategy ensured that teachers attended a session that they both voiced a need for, and were personally interested in learning more about. I believe that this strategy was successful. It was at the very beginning of the school year, so teachers were able to take what they learned and immediately apply it. It also was based on what teachers voiced they were interested in.
Professional development providers are agencies that offer professional learning opportunities to teachers on a variety of topics. They often play a key role in reform efforts in education by introducing teachers to new policy demands and teaching new pedagogical strategies (Knapp, 2003; Little, 1993). A wide range of organizations provide PD services, from districts to nonprofits, commercial firms, and universities (Coburn, 2005b; Coburn, Buchanan, & Morel, 2015; Little, 1989).
According to my opinion, professional development activities play a great role for administrators and instructors along with the level of leaners and utilized materials in educational process. It is also advised that universities should organize compulsory programs on regular basis for the administrators, administration staff, and instructors. (Admin.5)
A Professional Development Plan (PDP) is basically a project development plan to define one’s set career goal and therefore it is a necessary tool to guide you through the process. As a person with very keen interests in managing projects particularly in the construction field, I have set up a five year plan to position myself to achieve a Project Management Professional qualification (PMP) within the next following three to four years, that is achieving Project management qualification, Certified Associate in Project Management qualification (CAPM) and building a career in Project Management Office (PMO) in Construction field all within the approximate budget of AUD 80,000 by the end of the five year plan,
Professional development is not a one-day job. It should be a continuous thing if teachers want to become knowledgeable. In the early days, to refresh teachers, weekly workshops or seminars were conducted which was not very effective. Now the trend has changed. It became a continuous process. All the trainings that are carried out including course level ones are also known as professional development. Teachers gain a lot of knowledge, training and experience from those
While society generally views licensed professional counselors as individuals who provide mental health therapy, their role is much broader. Counselors strive to improve the lives of the population they serve through advocating for their profession, identifying unmet needs within their communities, creating solutions to meet these needs, and advocating for social justice. This may be done on the individual, local, state, and national level. Advocacy can include educating the public regarding the counseling profession, creating solutions to unmet needs in their communities, and lobbying for laws that will provide funding and coverage for mental health care.
