Synthesis Every employee is hired with a certain set of skills, knowledge, and abilities that match or closely match the role and responsibilities for a specific position. It is inevitable that roles and responsibilities for a position are going to change; especially when an organization changes to remain competitive. When those changes do occur, the employer has a corporate social responsibility to invest in their human capital. It certainly should not be the responsibility of the employee to invest his or her own resources for professional development (Constatine, 2012, para. 2). Before going further, we should define what professional development is. Professional development is the process of improving and increasing capabilities of staff through access to education and training opportunities in the workplace, through outside organization, or through watching others perform the job. Professional development helps build and maintain morale of staff members, and is thought to attract higher quality staff to an organization. The cost to a company is illustrated with the following hypothetical situation. Bob is a manager with Techtron Industries earning a salary of $75,000 a year. Bob has been with Techtron in the same position for 6 years and during that time has seen several senior managers leave and be replaced by individuals hired from outside the organization. In the past year, Bob had expressed an interest in two of these positions that became available when senior managers left Techtron, but was told he was not qualified for either position. Bob has come to the realization because Techtron does not invest in the development of its human capital, he will never be promoted and begins looking for opportunities
