When most people think of a hero they think back to comic superheroes or vigilantes from a novel. When most people think of a hero they think of Wonder Woman, Robin Hood, or James Bond. But what constitutes a hero? Is it their courage? Their noble tendencies? Or is it their inhumane characteristics that lead us to label them as a hero? I believe a hero doesn’t have to be a fictitious character from a movie or a book, but can be any man or woman in this world who stand up for the weak, speak up for the silent, and defend the victims of everyday life.

What is the definition of hero to you? According to Dictionary.com, a hero is a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. The concepts of hero change over time, a hero in literature is an individual to be admired and emulated, because of this he is the picture of the greatest qualities of the culture that created him. Heroes don’t only do great deeds, but also serve a function of being a model to societies. The thought of heroes reflects values importance to a culture.

When you hear the term, “hero” what comes to mind?. Superheroes inspire us to be people we want to be. They have the qualities that we value such as courage,selflessness, and grit. The heroes of today inspire us to to stand up for what is right.They risk their lives to save other innocent people. In the essay, Kristin Lewis writes that heroes inspire us to be “our better selves.” Superheroes of today and mythological characters (Theseus and Ariadne) from “Into the Maze of Doom” inspire us to be our better selves because they inspire us with their amazement.

There is no true definition of a hero, but mine is if someone goes out of their way to help people succeed at their goals. For me this person is Seth Harms. He helps where help is needed, and teaches to his best ability every day. During each day he is exposed to extremely hazardous conditions that can kill,(U.S. Department of Labor) but he does it anyway and that is a true hero.

My definition of a hero would have to be someone who is doing what they believe is right. This hero has to be strong, confident, intelligent, have leadership, caring, selflessness, courage, bravery, humility, and patience. These are the characteristics that any hero of my has to posses because any hero that I know has at least four of these quilts inside them and they all show,

What do you think of when you hear the word hero? Ohhh wait, you are probably thinking cool people with cool powers. And I know some people in my family think cool people with cool powers, So I actually asked 5 of my family members and 4 of them said superheroes, except for my dad, he said “I think a hero is someone who puts others ahead of themselves.” After I heard that it really gave me a new perspective on what a real hero is. In the next few minutes I will tell you about what it means to be a hero, heroes in my life, and finally what you can do to be a hero.

My version of a hero is somebody who can do good things and help out his or her community or society. These heroes don’t always have superpowers or some type of ability. They can be regular people who do something that can benefit other people. They put their lives on the line so that they can keep people safe.

What makes a Hero is someone who can never give up. Someone who can be prominent “Hard times don’t create heroes. It’s during the hard time when the ‘hero’ within us is revealed” - Bob Riley. What ties in my definition of a hero that Bob says that what makes a hero is what they do. This quote shows that an obstacle doesn’t make a hero. What makes the hero is how they react to the obstacle and what they do with the obstacle.

When the word hero is used to symbolize an individual, the first thing that comes to my mind is Superman. Now, it may seem childish but it’s quite true. For those who don’t know who Superman is, he’s a comic book character with superhuman powers that does nothing but “good” for his new home on earth. He was considered to be a god in the sense of being pure at heart. That’s just my perspective of it compared to the other billions. Why bring this up you might ask. I believe the word hero is used to represent what people think a righteous individual is.
