Definition Essay: Do We Trust People?

What is trust? The dictionary meaning of trust is a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. The second meaning is, confidence placed in a person by making that person the nominal owner of property to be held or used for the benefit of one or more others. But what can we really define as trust? In this paper, I will discuss how trust is used every day in different situations, how we deal with trust in various relationships, and how we as individuals practice trust within ourselves.

Building trust takes time and effort up front. It takes deep commitment and follow-through. It pays off.

We define trust as a certain belief and a sense of assurance that is based on strong but not logically-conclusive evidence, or based on some ones character, their ability, or truth that someone or something has shown over a period of time or over experiences (Cambridge, 2015). Trust is not something that is easily earned or given once you’ve proven yourself to be someone that cannot have that confidence placed in them. Trust is not a one-way street either. A person has to make the decision to trust someone, and the person that is being trusted has to decide if they want to live up to that expectation or not. Trust is not some sort of blind faith in a person. Trust is having confidence in your decision to be open and exposed emotionally to someone else. It is not something that you have to place in anyone in your life. It is up to you to decide weather or not you want to grant your trust to someone, and if you feel that they are worthy of it.

That’s all opinions, if we want to be politically correct, then trust is “a firm reliability, truth, ability, or strength of something or someone.” Without a doubt, my disagreement is high with this comment. Some people are reliable, but are not trustworthy enough to balance a bucket of water above your head without dropping it. My parents say “to trust is to love,” yet that cannot be the case. No one loves every person they trust (a good teacher, for example). Besides, you may love someone, but not trust them at all, such as a rowdy brother. As celebrity Lady Gaga once said, “Trust is like a mirror; you can fix it if it’s broken, but you can still see the crack.” George McDonald can contrast love with trust, too: “To be trusted is a greater compliment than being loved.” It’s not quite a simple feeling of pleasure and bonding when you trust someone; it is a relationship much more serious, much easier to betray, and much harder to build up.

What is the meaning of trust? What does it take for a person to fully, unconditionally trust a person? What can that person do, to change, for you to trust them? Merriam Webster’s Dictionary defines Trust as; the belief that someone or something is reliable, good, honest, effective, etc. And I believe trust is the number one key in healthy relationships. For others, especially in my story, I am still trying to understand their warped definition of that fantastic word, trust.

When you think of trust, what do you think of? In your friendships, how much trust do you have? If you don’t have trust, then you don’t have much. Trust is when you and your friend don’t talk a whole lot, but you know she won’t tell anybody your secrets. Trust also happens in the workplace, when you trust someone to show up for work when they're supposed to.

Because trust is so fragile and rare, even when we try our best to be honest and trust worthy, we are prone to betray others and even ourselves. Sometimes major betrayal is done intentionally to cause harm to others or an organization, but there are times when betrayal is minor and is caused when one talks about someone else or takes credit for something we did not do. Once trust is broken it is very difficult to build it again.

I say emotional because when you put trust into someone or something you’re being vulnerable. I say logical because you know the person would behave in a predictable manner.

Hard to gain; easily lost. Trust is earned, not given. Trust is a bond that brings humans as closely as love does. Trust could be a feeling, or a cause and effect type of thing. Of course, one cannot say that trust is infinite. Because trust can be gained and lost, and is seen in the actions of us humans as we live our lives. Some perceive trust as being put it in things such as, God, science, doctors, parents, or even water treatment plant operators. Other people look at trust only within in a relationship perspective, such as, being there for your mate. For example, trusting, supporting and showing genuine care for one another. Trust would also be demonstrated through consistency in his/her actions. For example, showing up for dates agreed-upon time. Keeping private information just between the two of you and always respecting boundaries. If you only look at trust from these ways you limit trust. Trust covers nearly every aspect of our lives and displays who you are as individuals. Trust should be earned not given, and some of the traits of trust are authenticity, experience, confidence, honesty, and integrity.

The act of trusting could be described, as being delicate as a flower, if we forget to nurture it is nonexistent. However, having faith in oneself is an art form and in my opinion we should practice it constantly. Due to this, it is crucial how well we treat people around us, and how thriving our relationships are.

A ton of famous quotes are also about trust. I chose the quote “Never trust the artist. Trust the tale. The proper function of a critic is to save the tale from the artist that created it.” -D.H. When I hear the word trust I think of friends. You have to have a lot of trust in your friends and they need to be able to trust you. I have a huge amount of trust in my best friend, I tell her everything. There are some people who say that you can trust them, but then it turns out that you can’t and they’ve told everyone your secret. I think that trust is confiding in a person or people that you know if you say, “don’t tell anyone,” they won’t tell anyone.
