Definition Essay: The Power Of Fear

Fear. The number one emotion that runs most of our lives. No matter how many times we try to avoid it, it just seems to keep coming back. Kate Winslet is one of my favorite actresses and she definitely knows what it's like to feel fear. As she has stated many times, some of the toughest roles she's played in films began with the feeling of fear. She would read a script and think to herself, "Wow, I'm scared to take this role. I don't know if I can do this." That thought, however, is exactly what led her to do it and as is turns out, the roles she feared the most turned out to be her best and even earned her many high profile awards, including the ultimate Academy Award.

The only person that can control on how you fear something whether it is in a dream or in your everyday life, is yourself. People think that they can’t control the fears that come in there life due to not being able to gather yourself and wake up if you are in a dream. There are many ways that fear can come upon your dreams, it could mean that you are trying to get over it, solve it, or facing it head on. When you go to bed your mind wanders about fears that you had in the past or fears in the future. Your fears are then put into images of which then create anxiety after you wake up.

One of the things we fear the most is the loss of or lack of control. Even if we really don’t have control, we like to think we do, and when we lose that sense of control, fear rushes in. For example, an alcoholic will say " I can quit any time; I’m in control." The fear comes when he realizes for the first time that he is an alcoholic and that he is not in control. We all fear uncertainty and the unknown. We arm ourselves against it with candles in the dark, or faith against the uncertainty of death. Then, when we think we’ve conquered our fear, it comes invading our minds again, let in by a smell or a taste, a sound or a thought Fear is always there, just waiting right under the surface, to awaken those memories which frighten us the most.

What is fear? Fear can be, and can come from, many things. It can come from everyday life experiences, such as taking tests in school, or giving a speech in a meeting at work. Or from things that frighten more people than just yourself. Such as going to war, being in an accident, or in the midst of a public shooting. In Alan Axelrod’s, “Nothing to Fear: Lessons in Leadership from FDR”, Alan talks about fear, and his points are valid, for fear is like a fog, it can be overcome, and that mankind has had worse things to fear than what is feared in his writing.

Everyone has some sort of fear or something they are scared of. Fear is a strong emotion that compels people to think and act in response to it. Fear is also unique in the fact that everyone has a different fear, and a different way of dealing with them. Some may say can help you survive, but we don't live in the caves anymore. Fear is a harmful emotion because it can cause paranoia, it can limit your potential, and it can make you prejudice.

Fear is an instinctive emotion which can be triggered by many different stimuli. Since every person feels fear as it is an evolutionary trait meant for preserving the survival of mankind, each person’s actions and reaction in the face of fear are different. Fear is a response to danger, and there is no right or wrong way to respond to danger. As long as the response to fear ensures survival, there is no right or wrong way to respond to it, as proven by Golding and Lamia. Understanding the role fear plays on humans can be extremely beneficial in understanding human nature. If our early primal ancestors did not feel the emotion of fear, it is hard to say whether or not our human race could have survived for as long as it has. Thus, understanding the role of fear in our lives is crucial to understanding human nature as a whole and the nature of our survival as a race for so long. After all, in the words of author Veronica Roth, “fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up.” Roth’s words echo exactly what Golding and Lumia tells us about the place of fear in our lives through their works too, stating that fear is crucial to our

Fear. Is it a way to motivate someone to get something done or get them to do something? Yes. It is a great way to get someone to do something and motivate them to do something. Threatening someone within an inch of their life would definitely get them doing whatever you tell them or ask them to do. If I was put into a situation where I was forced to use fear to get someone to do something I would and personally if someone used my fears to do something I would definitely do whatever they asked of me.

Culture of Fear, by Frank Furedi, is a book that looks at how widespread fear impacts Western cultures like the United States and Great Britain. Frank Furedi believed that society tends to panic too much, as we actually enjoy "an unprecedented level of safety." I admit that Frank Furedi's novel is based upon a novel concept, and an interesting one at that. However, Frank Furedi comes off to me as little more than a fear monger and an intellectual elitist. His book, to me, seems redundant more often than not. But sometimes part of college is learning about points of view that you may not agree with, so I tried to maintain that perspective when I read the book.

When it comes to fear, there is nothing in its’ path. Meaning that when you fear something, or someone, it can lead you to act irrationally. Other times, fears can cause a person to judge another beforehand based on previous shown facts. Fear is crucial to life, without fear there would be no courage, and with out courage the world would simply be boring; think about it. Imagine your deepest fear, now imagine that it is impossible to feel fear towards it, or anything for that matter. It is so odd how motivation like fear can change your perspective, and enlighten the soul. Fear adds flavor, fear adds spice, but in the end it must be mixed with something nice. Fear is created by your perspective of a situation, object or topic. You fear something based on the way you perceive it, evaluating whether it as a threat to you or not. Once a fear is born it continues to shape your perspective intensifying the fear and guaranteeing that it will remain. When these perspectives become distorted the fear that drives them has the potential to take control over a person’s life. As the fear grows clear observation is limited and obsessive behavior can occur. Once a person’s perspective is controlled by their fear their quality of life diminishes which contributes to pessimism and a lack of social connections. Fear has had a constant presence in the world, and how it is reacted to separates those who will float, and those who will sink. Fear is a negative emotion and only serves as a hinderance in people’s lives; there are no benefits in fear. In addition, fears must be faced and conquered for success to be reached; history serves as proof of this necessity. What is fear? Is fear just a protection mechanism our brain creates when we encounter a problem? Can fear have the power to hold you back from something you would metaphorically kill to do or have? Fear can be just a word to some and to others it could be the perfect word to describe life in their perspectives. Maya Angelou’s poem “Caged Bird” tells the perspective of two beings and how fear has an impact on their daily life. “Mother to Son”, a poem by Langston Hughes, discusses how you shouldn’t let fear hold you back from what you aspire to do, tough times create one to become tougher. People shouldn’t let other’s choices and opinions impact their own. You should choose your own path and your own decisions, as said in Robert Frost’s original poem “The Road Not Taken.” Fear should not be what makes you or you're decisions. Furthermore, you believe you can vanquish that fear it can make something terrifying seem harmless, however, if you do not you
