All I wanted when I was little was to have beautiful long hair. All of my dolls had hair down to their waist , and I longed to have hair like them. Unfortunately for me, my hair did not grow very fast… at all. I was practically bald until I was three; and my hair was only about to my chin when I was ready to start kindergarten. So there I was, on my first day at Foreign Language Academy. I was in Señora Vargas’s Kindergarten class holding on to my mom, dreading the moment she would have to leave. I had been really excited about starting school and getting to wear my navy blue dress and my hellokitty backpack. Actually being in the classroom, however, incredibly nerve racking. Most of the parents were mingling and asking questions to the teacher, while the kids tried to find their place. Some kids had already began to play games with one another. Others, like me, were more shy, still clinging to their parent. In all the commotion, I noticed a girl who had the longest hair in the entire class of kindergartners. She looked a lot like me except she had freckles, a pink cast on her arm, and the hair I had ever seen. Her hair was the same color as mine, but about triple the length, and with more curl in it. Jealousy immediately swept over me. It seemed like this girl had everything I had ever wished for in my entire life. I also thought casts were really cool at that time because I did not really understand that broken bones hurt, or that you couldn't really move
Have you ever felt so nervous in your life that your mind ached with anxiety. It was the final race in my seventh grade track season, but little did I know my anxiety became the least of my worries.
Who am I? What is the point of knowing who I am? We are all the same, right? Susie Clevenger, a poet, said that “there is only one you. Stop trying to devalue yourself by trying to be a copy of someone else” (Clevenger, 2013). This encouraged me to accept who I am, instead of looking at others around me to form my identity. On reading “Multicultural Social Work Practice: A Competency-Based Approach to Diversity and Social Justice”, I have discovered how my personal identity was formed by using the Racial/Cultural Identity Development Model and Feminist - Based Identity Model. In addition to exploring my cultural Identity, I will be discussing how prejudice impacted my life and what privileges were given to me because of my identity. Lastly, I will talk about my cultural competence and the plans that I will have in place for me to improve on it.
Students, teachers and parents all had differing things to say during the experience. “Hey we didn’t have a party like this when we were in seventh grade, this is mutiny,” cried out an eighth grader. “Shh I want you guys to be as silent as mice while in this library,” Mrs. Miller scolded at her eighth graders. “The eighth grader teachers are scrooges” smirked Billy, an eighth student. Scrooge was a very grumpy old man who did not treat others well. “Wow the students are actually paying attention, at least over here,” said a seventh grader’s mother as she observed kids close to her read. “Hey did you know Alyson likes John, her best friend’s boyfriend,” a seventh grade girl (not being monitored by a parent) failed to whisper. “November
I wake up in the morning to go out hunting. After grabbing a washcloth I go into the bathroom and wash my face with warm water. The warmth of the water warms my body and I am wide awake. I go down the hall into the room where my family keeps our hunting clothes. The room has a coolness to it. After putting my clothes on I grab my gun and head out the door. It is the crisp cool morning of November 5th. Driving to the meadow to go to my stand I saw nothing. I get out of the truck tell my dad good luck and I start walking on the side of the woods. Hearing the frost crack and crunch as I am walking. Entering the woods the sound of leaves rustling under my feet. I reach my stand, hook my rifle to the tow string and climb up the stand. The freezing
Most kids in the United States begin to speak English at age 2, however, I began at age 4. English was a problem for me when I was in school, due to speaking and comprehending the actual language. Throughout my school years, I have been assigned many writing assignments, I found that I had great difficulty in putting my thoughts on paper. Yet, with practice I improved tremendously with each given essay, there significant differences between my work in each stage of my life. Teachers have asked me to write character analysis essays, persuasive essays, and compare contrast essays. I have truly enjoyed writing as I improved my skill with time. There are areas where I felt improvement could be made by writing more or reading more . Which
Sometimes a person may feel that they have no purpose in life. Finding out who you are just takes the time of sitting down and thinking of the importance in your life. Who am I? I am Mercedes Kimberly Kingston, and I am a person with different personalities, characteristics, and identities. The many ways, in which I identify myself, in fact, are the ways that define who I am. My Identity is something only I can fully define. I have a little brother, which makes me a sister; I have two loving parents, which makes me a daughter; I am in college studying medicine, which makes me a student; and I have wonderful friends in desperate need of support, which makes me a wonderful best friend.
From day one of my life, I had begun to establish my own identity, or at least that’s what I get out of the stories that get repeated at family events when they talk about “back in the day”. From day one of my life, I was exposed to many different cultures and races. I guess you could say I am one of the more fortunate people who found themselves early on in life and knew exactly what I wanted to do. Many people my age have no idea who they are (identity problems) and have no idea where there life is headed. I feel sorry for these people for not being as fortunate as I, but like previously stated, I was very fortunate when being brought up.
What makes me who I am? What are my traits? People are born with their own special traits and personality. People have taken personality tests that allow them to know which trait they have. However, one can determine her or his personality and know truly oneself through family, friends or colleagues. My small family has always emphasized the importance of values which have had an enormous impact on my whole life. There are three primary aspects of traits that characterize me and shaped me to who I am today. The two main characteristics of traits that my family and friends describe me with them are hardworking and trustworthy, but the empathetic trait is the one traits that I can use to describe myself.
There are many personal characteristics that can affect a person as an individual and his professional success, namely openness, ability to learn and adapt etc. These personal characteristics can sometimes make a person successful and sometimes doesn’t. As I spend more and more time as a professional, I perceive that there are few characteristics that are essential for professional success: namely ambitious, creative and adaptable. These characteristics come out in many different ways. Have you set your goals? Have you decided the path you have to take to pursue your goal? What are the sacrifices you can do to achieve your ambition? How much can you think out of the box to resolve a particular issue or bring new idea to the table? How
Adolescent developmental changes can have striking effects on a teenager’s personality. Growing spurts are one of these. They can cause teens to become very clumsy, making them insecure and unsure of themselves. These spurts can also make a teen not feel like him/herself. The oncoming of puberty can effect personality changes such as acting out or aggressiveness, especially in males. This is also a time where teens
School, to me and among many peers of my age, is not a distant term. I have spent one-third of my life time sitting in classrooms, every week since I was seven years old. After spending this much time in school, many things and experiences that happened there have left their mark in my memory. Some are small incidences while some have had a great impact on me. However, regardless the degree of significance, things that happened all contributed to shape the person that I am now.
Fear, guilt, happiness, and anger are emotions which individuals can be struck with at the most unexpected time, but as human beings, we have experienced all of these feelings a plethora of times over the course of life. Emotions and feelings are the results of one’s actions that lead to situations. The way an individual acts, speaks, or even discerns can lead to circumstances and ultimately trigger emotions, which in the end, possibly provide you with a valuable lesson.
There are three very important aspects that play a major rule in my life. They can be categorized as intellectual, social, and spiritual. My intellectual self is interesting because I am mainly right-brained which means that I tend to use my creativity more than my mathematical skills, also making me a visual learner. My social self consists of friends, family, and my surroundings. I spend most of my time at home with my family. Whenever I am with my friends, I observe their behaviors and listen to their opinions. I am more of an independent type of person. Being with different people has influenced me into appreciating different cultures and beliefs. I have learned things that have now been incorporated into my own set of beliefs and
Over the course, I have learned that all people are unique and have their own personal traits and qualities. One person does not just simply fall into one category, but various categories. What is beautiful about all of us is that we all have diverse personalities, traits and qualities. I have learned that we should be proud of and embrace these unique qualities of ours.
When asked to describe myself I never know what to say, but I should know myself the best, right?
