The best example of me being a leader is the fact that I have worked in a specific class that has helped me develop leadership skills: Yearbook. In Yearbook, I learned how to direct a staff of students to work on specific jobs that would eventually lead to the development of the Yearbook. During this class, it was my job to properly organize the responsibilities of upperclassmen, assign them specific events to cover, and even place the example of how some of the jobs were done. In addition, I also served as a leader by being the example of what type of student to be in a class by working hard on all of the given assignments. In projects, I do not take the role of organizing people most of the time because I do most of the work anyway, so I
Being a leader is being a role model and striving to make a positive impact on those around you. In order to be a successful leader, you have to put yourself second and your peers first. For example, my younger sister and I both play softball. I have played on several travel teams during the summer and this year, she tried out for her first competitive travel team. I was asked to aid her by helping her with the mechanics of the game. During this time, I sacrificed my time to put the needs of another person before my own and it paid off, because she made the team and I got to witness the results of my
Leadership is being able to guide other students into being the best they can be. I am a leader who is always positive and cheering others on to achieve their goals. At my school, I have a position as the Vice President of Academics in National Honors Society. Since I have obtained this position, I encourage other students in this group to participate in service projects which is where one volunteers to help out the community in some aspect. These volunteering opportunities are good thing to do because it builds character and it is always fun helping others out. As a leader, I bring new ideas to the table on where we should help out in the community and anything that we could do in school that would fun and helpful. Along with participating in National Honors Society at my school, I am also involved in our Student Government Association. Although I do not have a leadership position in this club, I still engage in the activities that we do. For the past two years, I have gone to an annual meeting for leadership where multiple schools attend. At this meeting there are fun activities where you learn more about leadership and how to be a good leader. As a leader, these meetings help because it is always good to learn new
There have also been people who have motivated me to be a leader, especially my high school orchestra director. At the end of my junior year, my director called me into his office and told me he would be moving me from the first violin section to the second violin section. He said he knew I was quiet in the back of the first violin section, but he could see I possessed the leadership skills necessary to sit in the front of the second violin section. This really motivated me to try and make him proud the next year at the front of the section. Many different aspects of my life have affected my leadership philosophy.
To begin, I exhibit qualities of a great leader. Firstly, at my Saturday morning bowling league, I am positioned as the anchor, which means I am expected to lead my team to victory.. Secondly, I lead by being a good example to my peers, and I am a positive role model. Lastly, when my friends have problems they come to me and I lead them to a positive solution. This is being a good leader.
As a secretary for the Turlock FFA chapter, I consider myself a leader. I have a taken a leadership position that has expanded my knowledge of how a leader should be and how to take responsibility. I have influenced other members from my school to participate in events and attend meetings. I have shown them what I learned and how I applied it to my everyday life. I also learned that I can improve and better myself from trying an experience that would take me out of my comfort zone. It was a little challenging adapting and keeping up with the events and
I believe that leadership is largely a team effort rather than a one-person dictatorship. One area where I have displayed this form of leadership is on the soccer field. I have played the sport for four years now and have made lifelong connections with my fellow teammates through our intense sense of camaraderie. I know that I can depend on my teammates and they can depend on me during our games or just in the community in general because we have such a deep bond from working together to achieve a common goal. Another example of leadership is, whenever I am part of a group project, I ensure that everyone stays focused and on task and knows what exactly it is they are doing to contribute to the group. I am the one who helps others with any problems they may encounter and who checks behind everyone else’s work because I want to make sure that everything is done accordingly. My fellow classmates often come to me when they need extra help with their schoolwork or with understanding a new concept. I also demonstrate excellent academic initiative. I go out of my way to further research concepts mentioned in class when I get home so that I can have a full understanding of every topic. For example, while I was taking Spanish courses in school, I also downloaded a Spanish-learning app on my phone that I used when I got home to learn new concepts not
I am a leader when it comes to multiple things. In my choir, I’m the section leader for the baritones. In group projects, I often take charge of planning the project in order to ensure that it gets done in the best way possible. One of the most notable times I took a leadership position was when I volunteered with a group of my NHS peers at the Hot Chocolate Run in downtown Chicago. As more and more people began to finish the race, the lines where we were serving hot chocolate became really hectic and crowded. I decided to take leadership and usher people into different lines, as well as tell everyone to have their tickets ready when they got to the counter, even though I was not told to do that. In doing this, I expedited the process of handing
I have shown leadership throughout my time at Lincoln High School. When I was a trumpet section leader, I had to encourage the section to try their hardest and not give up halfway through the day. When our band director told us to run to our spots, I ran to my spot and encourage others that were lagging behind to hurry up. As a trumpet section leader, I encouraged others to memorize their music by being one of the first to complete all my music memorization tests. I show academic leadership by completing my assignments early.
Being an excellent leader doesn’t take physically being the strongest or the smartest. It’s the individual that takes the responsibility for the pack and guides them to success. Outside of the classroom I’ve taken initiative in several groups. Such as on my powerlifting team, by providing a good example for my young siblings and also by participating in a freshman mentoring program. These experiences have made me stronger and more aware of others struggles.
I have been a leader for as long as I can remember, dating back to middle school where I was captain of club volleyball teams and student council delegate numerous times. Upon entering high school my tendency to be a highly involved leader continued. In high school I pushed myself to enroll in Honors courses which eventually turned into Advanced Placement courses. I was selected as a member of the National Honors Society where I logged over 100 hours of community service. Additionally, in high school I held the position of class president for two consecutive years. In this role I was in charge of leading a group of six other chair holders as we planned and executed school functions. While holding this position, I was a member of the high school
There are several characteristics that a leader or a potential leader should carry which include: confidence, responsibility, Integrity, etc... As a child of God I work on exemplifying those traits, for example I try to use my experience and knowledge to guide some of the freshmen males at my high school so that they do not make any mistakes that can haunt them later on such as low grades and bad studying habits. I am also a Student mentor in the club the distinguished gentlemen I help guide the younger students in what they should and shouldn't do. As a Co-captain of the track and field team I push my teammates to work hard and push themselves to greater heights even when they feel it’s pointless. I am building qualities and habits of leadership for the future in my adulthood where true leadership is valued. This is why I want to be a naval officer, to help me mature as a person and a
I am a leader through example both in and out of school. When in a group project, I take a role as a leader to ensure everyone is contributing to produce the best quality work possible. If my group is running low on time, I generally take the responsibility of finishing the project at home, to bring in the next day. When in a class competition, I would take my role as a leader and lead my team to victory, ensuring nobody is left out and keeping order within my group. I work my way around setbacks and help others who are struggling with their own. Such as during my time playing of the Foster tennis team. If someone is struggling to perform a certain skill, I try my best to nudge them in the right direction. Giving pointers, and exploiting
Before this class, I had a very primitive and vague definition of leadership. Not only did I define it as per my views and ideologies, but I also said that each individual has their own definition of leadership. My initial belief was that leadership does not have a clear cut definition, but there were well defined leadership traits which made an individual. I also initially believed that personal traits did not translate into leadership traits with no strong correlation. After going through the various modules this class offered, it is safe to say that I have significantly redefined leadership and underwent a strong personal assessment. This paper talks what I took back from each of the class activities, assignments and how my self-assessment compares to the perception of others.
“The environment has changed—it is more complex, volatile, and unpredictable. The skills needed for leadership have also changed—more complex and adaptive thinking abilities are needed. The methods being used to develop leaders have not changed (much). The majority of managers are developed from on-the-job experiences, training, and coaching/ mentoring; while these are all still important, leaders are no longer developing fast enough or in the right ways to match the new environment” (Future Trends, 2014, p. 5).
In today's ever changing society, leadership is a skill that will have a profound impact on business operations in the future. Our society of late has been marred by unethical actions that were the direct result of terrible leadership. Leadership will be needed to navigate this turmoil we have subjected ourselves to. Currently, there is a crisis in Europe as nation after nation is attempted to avoid default. Just yesterday (April 13, 2012), the cost to insure Spanish bonds against default rose to the highest level since 2008, as investors worry about the governments ability to pay them back. In essence, it will cost $500,000 annually to buy $10 million of protection against a Spanish default using a five-year credit default swap or CDS contract (Euro, 2012). It is going to take leaders to help abate the influence of Europe's sovereign debt problems on the rest of the world. It is also going to take leadership to ensure that Spain, Italy, Portugal, and France do not need to ever require outside funding again. Through this course in Leadership and organization behavior, I believed I have acquired the foundation needed to lead a group of individuals to a common objective. I also believe I have acquired the needed skills to help motivate and challenge my team to achieve superior results.
