In 1999 Adnan Syed was 17 years old and senior in high school, on January 13th 1999 Hae Min Lee, a girl that he had been close with, disappeared and 6 weeks later found dead; Adnan syed was charged with her murder and has been in prison ever since then. Adnan is a muslim-american who was on the track team had good grades and was homecoming prince who was dating Hae Min Lee off and on in high school. Hae and Adnan both had strict parents that don't believe in dating forcing them both to keep many secret from their families. When they broke up and Hae started dating a new guy some people say Adnan went crazy and others say he was hurt but he got over it. So when Hae went missing right after school wednesday some people thought it could've been him who killed her. The problem with Adnan's story is he doesn't remember that day, everyone was questions 6 weeks after the day Hae went missing he says he had track practice but they don't take attendance there so no proof, he said he could of been in the library but no one saw him, he also said the his friend Jay had his car and his cell phone when the murder was said to be happening. All together he had no alibi which makes him a suspect but also making jay a suspect. On February 28 1999 Adnan Syed was arrested and charged with first degree murder. …show more content…
Adnan Syed’s conflict with the justice system and the murder of Hae Lee teaches the reader that the truth doesn't always come out and the justice system is broken through Adnan being in jail for 16 years without having strong evidence to support him killing Hae
Firstly, the Nisha call placed Adnan with Jay after the murder. This call could have been a butt-dial that rang for 2 minutes. The call could have been from Adnan, who wanted to make Jay talk with Nisha. The Nisha call does not prove Adnan killed Hae, as it simply just puts him with Jay at the time. Also, the prosecution stated that Adnan was constantly doing bad things. Everyone does bad things, but it does not make them murderers. Finally, Jay knew the location of Hae’s car. The fact that Jay knew the location of Hae’s car should arouse suspicion on him. The evidence utilized by the prosecution is circumstantial and can be disproved, and the lack of strong evidence proves Adnan’s
On January 13, at the time the State claims Hae was murdered, Adnan was at the Woodlawn Public Library, and there was a witness to prove it. “Her name's Asia McClain. [Adnan’s] like, right after I got arrested, she wrote me a couple of letters. And she said she also went to see my family. And she said she specifically remembers me being at the library, at the public library, right after school.” (Koenig 8) This demonstrates clearly that Adnan couldn’t have killed Hae between 2:15 and 2:36, and there’s a witness to prove this fact. Also, Hae was in a different location at that time, because a girl named Summer talked to her after school that day. “Summer said this conversation about Hae not getting on the bus happened… probably at around 2:30, 2:45… (Summer) All of the things that I’m unclear about or kinda shaky about, or-- I am clear on that. 2:36 would not have been possible for her to even have met him wherever because I know for a fact that she was with me during that time, or at the school during that time.” (Koenig 9) Summer confirms that Hae was not killed between 2:15 and 2:36, even though that’s what the State says. Summer is confirming that the State is wrong
Physical evidence was extremely lacking, and all DNA tests conducted were clear of Syed’s DNA. Therefore, it is more than likely that Syed is innocent. The evidence, or lack thereof, presented in the case of Adnan Syed v. State of Maryland proves that Adnan Syed is not guilty of the murder of Hae Min Lee.
With the State’s defense crumbling without Jay’s testimony, what is the evidence against Adnan? There is physical evidence linking him to the murder, that is undisputable. So what does the state have? A palm print of Adnan’s on the back of an Atlas but not on the most incriminating page is about it for the State. If we stripped this case of Jay and all the “maybe” evidence you’re left with motive. It’s simple because Adnan didn’t have one. He was friends with Hae, Adnan was civil towards her and her new boyfriend, and he himself had already moved on as well. If we put this case back together and include all the so-called evidence then we need an alibi for
Jay was a “drug dealer who worked in a porn video store” (Alvim 15). He ran an “operation out of [his] grandmother’s house...had a lot more on the line than just a few bags of weed”(Vargas-Cooper). Indisputably, Jay was a delinquent unlike Adnan, an esteemed Muslim teen referred to as the “community’s golden child”(Zaman 3). The law enforcement’s trust in Jay’s words is inconceivable; Jay is pathological liar and hooligan that has incessantly broken the law. Jay is dishonest even towards his own friend, Jenn. “When [Jenn] asked [Jay] if he was involved in the crime in any way he denie[d] it stating that even though Adnan asked for his help to bury Hae’s body, he did not help him, he only took Adnan somewhere in the city and dropped him off”(Alvim 15). Indeed, Jay seems to be minimizing his participation in the crime in order to protect himself. An innocent man would not have massive inconsistencies in his story. The discrepancies in Jay’s testimony have concealed the truth, causing for the State to have a clouded judgement on the Adnan’s
A lot of people wonder if Adnan Syed is guilty or innocent, today as a legal assistant I'm going to tell you one important reason why he is innocent. Adnan is not guilty because there is another potential suspect like Jay. Jay's story that "proves" Adnan's guilt, has changed every interview and testimony. Jay had intimate knowledge of the crime he knew things, like if he knew every single thing that Adnan was thinking about which makes everything looked suspicious. Also Jay's stories don't quite match Adnan's cell records.
Adnan Syed is accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend, and various factors present him as a very likely suspect. Information put together by the state don’t add up, but instead prove he is innocent. Is Adnan guilty or innocent for his ex-girlfriend’s death? In the Serial Podcast, journalist Sarah Koenig discusses the case, committed almost seventeen years ago, and uncovers new evidence that indicates Adnan’s innocence. Adnan Syed has been viewed as a boyfriend, honor roll student, and a murderer. Many described him as a smart, flirtatious, and a likable high schooler. On January 13, 1999, his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, was murdered. Investigators immediately assumed Adnan as the primary suspect because Hae had broken up with him, a month
Annually hundreds of wrongfully convicted bystanders are let out of prison, some having served decades for crimes they didn’t commit. On January 13th, 1999, Hae Min Lee of Woodlawn high school was murdered and her body later found in linkin park. The person convicted? Adnan Syed, an ex-boyfriend. With, the majority of the evidence easily disproven by cell tower records, an alibi not ever addressed, and jurors who openly admit his culture was a factor, Adnan Syed deserves the right to a new and fair trial.
Think about how often people get arrested and how often trials are held every year, let alone every day. Oftentimes, innocent people are accused and charged for a crime that wasn’t their fault. This was the case for Adnan Syed, an innocent guy who was put in jail for a murder case. On January 13, 1999, Hae Min Lee was murdered at the age of 17. The evidence in this case was very unexplainable, but of course, the state went after Hae’s ex-boyfriend Adnan who really had nothing to do with the murder. Things that prove Adnan’s innocence are the breakup between him and Hae, how Adnan thought about and his feelings towards Hae, how the times and stories told with others didn’t suit well, and his alibi. Additionally, his DNA didn’t match with items
On January 13th of 1999, a 17 year old Korean girl by the name of Hae Min Lee when missing after school in Baltimore, Maryland. Lee’s body was discovered in Leakin park; three weeks later in a shallow grave. The police arrested and charged Lee’s ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed with the murder six weeks later. The police alleged Syed because of phone records they obtained also their only witness Jay Wilds. In the murder case of Hae Min Lee, Adnan Syed should not have been convicted. Syed should not have been convicted on the account of Syed has no history of violence, the single witness in the case has major inconsistencies in his story about the events that occurred, and the lack of evidence that firmly connects Syed to the murder.
The podcast Serial was based off of Adnan who was convicted in 2000 and sentenced to life in prison for the killing his ex-girlfriend and High School classmate Hae Min Lee. The host of Serial was Sarah Koenig. She explained Adnan case in detail and tried to solve the case. She gives her opinion and other peoples opinion on Adnan and whether he did it or not. He was only 17 years old when sentenced. Record state he had murdered her in the beginning of 1999 in Baltimore. Remember he was only 17 at this time. This puts him in senior year of high school. Do you think he is capable of doing something like this?
I am first going to talk about the evidence the state had against Adnan. They had Adnan’s timeline, they had cell phone records, they kind of had a motive. I am going to start with Adnan’s timeline of his day. Adnan got to school, carried on with a normal day, until around 10:45 a.m.. Adnan let Jay borrow his car because he needed to get his girlfriend a birthday present. Jay ended up having the car all day. So, according to Adnan’s story, he was with Jay during his lunch and free period. He would've left the school at approximately 10:45 a.m. and returned around 11:15 or 11:30 a.m.. His day continues on, late to his psychology class. At around 2:15 he went to the library to check his email, he was there until 3:30. Meaning he wouldn’t of been
I think that it wasn’t Adnan that killed Hae but Jay did it. I think that he did it because he knew where Hae’s car was parked. I feel like Jay should have gotten some punishment when they convicted Adnan because he was an accessory to murder . I feel like he did it because he seems to tell a lot of people about it to point the finger at Adnan.
What would you do if a convicted criminal’s guilt was being questioned? Would you have the urge to let your inner detective shine? If you are one of those people, the perplexity of this murder would be right up your alley. On January 13, 1999, in Baltimore, Maryland, 18-year old high school senior Hae Min Lee mysteriously disappeared after school, leaving her family and friends worried. Weeks later, on February 9, 1999, the innocent young woman’s body was found buried in Leakin Park. Many people, including the whole state of Maryland, pointed fingers at Adnan Syed. Syed comes from a traditional Muslim family, yet he did “American teen-like” things, such as dating and going to
As humans, we believe in myths that the police, or anyone working for the justice system, will say the truth. This is a given, since they work for the justice system. Nevertheless, the Serial podcast hosted by Sarah Koenig questions this criminal justice system people whole heartedly trust. Serial is about a 1999 case where a Muslim teenage boy, Adnan Syed, is convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee – 17-year-old Korean teenager. I have listened to the Serial podcast and took a significant amount of interest toward it. However, when I continued to listen to the podcast, I could clearly see that throughout Adnan’s trial and the investigation process, there were many flaws in the justice system. This has confirmed the criminal justice system to be flawed and ineffective, which is seen through the defense, investigation team, as well as the prosecution.
