Interpersonal Communication and Social Media (Question 2)
In Chapter 2 of Looking Out Looking In it focuses on interpersonal communication and social media. This chapter looks at mediated communication versus face to face communication. It discusses the similarities and differences between mediated and face to face communication, it also covers why a certain type of communication is more preferred in situations. First off let’s look at the similarities of mediated communication and face to face communication they both have the same goals which is simply to satisfy physical, social or practical needs. They both go through the same processes, and have similar principals. The differences between mediated communication and face to face communication, the main difference that separates the two are the terms richness and leanness, richness is defined as having an abundance of nonverbal cues that add clarity to a verbal message. Leanness is defined as the exact opposite lacking the nonverbal information. When using mediated communication it lacks the person to person interaction facial expressions, reactions, emotions, mediated messages so frequently it is difficult to see exactly how a person is reacting or responding to your message and can be hard to read into or interpret, mediated messages are described as leaner messages. On the other hand face to face communication has more of the nonverbal cues to help tell how a person is feeling about a situation or how they are

Interpersonal communication is how individuals connect with one another, and is a necessary skill for anyone that desires to build harmony, demonstrate respect, diffuse and solve problems, and build meaningful and mutual relationships. This course has allowed me to better understand how and why I communicate the way I do, as well as ways to improve my communication skills and be more cognizant of the functions and repercussions of communication. In order for future generations and today’s youth to be better communicators, it’s important that focus is returned to more face to face communications instead of social media and texts.
