Different Types Of Parenting Styles

Parenting styles have been described by Diana Baumrind into four categories, authoritative, authoritarian, neglectful, and indulgent parenting (Santrok 461). Parenting styles can be defined as patterns of attitudes in how parents choose to express and communicate with their children. This paper will examine the different type of parenting styles as it relates to ethnicity and various cultures. What exactly is ethnicity and culture? The Oxford Dictionary defines ethnicity as “the fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition.” Ethnic groups are individually different based on their race, religion and, traditions. They can differ in terms of languages, foods, stories, customs and, values. Culture, according to the Oxford Dictionary is defined as, “the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.” Culture can be viewed as specific to a particular group or family. The styles of communication between parents and children tend to be very different among cultures, which is why certain interactions can be acceptable and at the same time can be labeled offensive depending on the cultural context.
“Historically, parenting has been conceptualized in multiple ways in an attempt to describe the variety of behaviors that parents engage in with their children” (Le, Ceballo, Chao, Hill, Murry, and Pinderhughes 2008).
