Writing an essay at Tertiary level is an extremely difficult process.
Introduction
The ability to write a quality piece of writing at the tertiary level is a procedure that does not come easily. As mentioned in Marshall and Rowland (2006, p.195).the complexity of developing a style of writing that is personal and academic while processing and developing thoughts and concepts into a presentable piece of academic writing can be a daunting process ( myself included ).

Therefore the writing of an essay, although difficult, is a process that is of benefit to the student as a capstone or finish to their study. As Rowntree mentions “Writing is the crucial step without which study would be incomplete” (2006, p.65).The writing of an essay is a process where you communicate your skills and knowledge in the written form.
Physical Hurdles
The written essay is a task that is normally done by the writer away from class. The timeframe is usually adequate provided the student begins in a timely fashion without procrastinating. When writing at home the immediate environment may have debilitating effects. Orr (1992, p.80). States”To maximise your output arrange for a quiet and distraction free writing period”. This I find is particularly important as I can also relate to this as well as a quote in Marshall and Rowland (2006, p15). “...in formal learning you are required to concentrate for sustained periods and to study subjects that aren’t of immediate importance to you.”
Your physical surroundings are important for producing an atmosphere conducive to effective study and writing. A student who is balancing study and work with limited control over time may have trouble concentrating on producing a well balanced essay, in comparison to someone who has their own room, desk and family support. The survey result Berrett includes shows that students see writing as “basically a performance”. Berrett also introduced an argument from the “Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing” report, which claims that writing is not a “linear process”. The author states that successful writing requires various processes, habits and experiences, such as “curiosity, flexibility, persistence and metacognition”. Since for most highschoolers, writing is ‘’framed as preparation of tests”, they do not have the opportunity to “develop ideas or raise prose”. The author suggests the students require change in their mindset of writing. However, the only evidence the author provides is from a students’ self-reported survey, instead of actual writing assignments. This rather subjective evidence results in a less convincing argument. Despite this flaw in logic, I personally agree with the author. I find the transformation of writing from high school to university is challenging. The main reason is that my writing experience back then was more about “following directions”. The format and structure of the writing assignment was provided, and all the information I need was spoonfed to me. As a result, there was no researching and developing my own idea, and in the first week of university, when I was asked to write a lab report with my own theory, I brainstormed for hours before eventually generated one. Nevertheless, I hold onto the hope that improvements on creativity in writing can be made as I gradually develop my “curiosity, flexibility, persistence and metacognition”. From elementary school to high school, I was taught that my writing had to be structured and follow strict criteria. After I arrived in Mr. Mukherjee’s ENG 102 class, I was given the opportunity to express my creative freedom through words and graphical pictures. It can often be difficult and challenging to improve upon my own writing abilities unless motived with an idea in mind. When looking back on my time at ASU, I thought about the goals that I wanted to address for myself and the course goals that my instructor had set for the class. These goals include ones that I had accomplished to the best of my ability and ones that I need to address as well as improve.
Teachers, parents, and friends often tell students exactly what the writing process should entail and how long it should take. However, the older I get, the more I realize that the writing process varies not only from person to person, but also from one writing project to the next. Throughout my years of life, I have written countless papers, ranging from a persuasive speech to an extensive research paper, and each project requires an altered version of my personal writing process. While each individual has his own writing process, there can be many similarities between different writing processes. Finding one’s individual writing process takes trial, error, and repetition. As I look back into my high school years, I thought I wrote papers well. But then coming into a college environment, my papers were mediocre. By overlooking at my past papers, I found that they were unorganized, sloppy and had bad use of diction. From now on, I will use the tools I learned in English 1100-40 as a foundation for the future papers I intend on writing in college. Following the criteria of organizing ideas so that they flow, impacting the reader with diction and also by being creative, will help become an ideal writer. During this semester in English 107, I have progressed more as a writer. Before I went to University of Arizona, my writing was rigid. I wrote five-paragraph TOEFL style essay all the time in my high school life. After I attended in English 107, I was not confident about my writing skill. Throughout these three projects we have done, I become more and more confident about my writing skill than before. The Student Learning Outcomes also helped me to grow as a writer a lot. In these goals, I did well on several of them, but I still need to work on the other goals.

Coming up with a theme and an argument is hard to convey, making the reader see what I'm truly trying to say. In this course, I learned a multitude of techniques to improve my essay and how to keep the readers attention. Furthermore, I learned how to incorporate academic journals and online articles to help make my essay stronger. Additionally, I learned that free-writing can help me start an essay and provides my brain a starting point for writing an essay. Free-writing allows me to write down as much information as possible so that I can help myself start off an essay with some sort of structure. The process in which my essay is created is to start free-writing, complete a rough draft, revise that draft with the help of my peers, and lastly, write my final draft.
