Residential schools segregated and integrated aboriginal children to “civilize and Christianize” to Euro-Canadian values, then were sent home to teach their families those same values (Chansonneuve, 2005, p. 34). Residential schools had immediate and long-term impacts on Aboriginal children and families. There were three phases of residential schools between the mid 1800s when residential schools were created until 1998 when the government’s response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples was released (Chansonneuve, 2005). The Canadian government thought residential schools would be beneficial rather than day schools because they could remove children from their “evil surroundings” (Chansonneuve, 2005, p. 33). Furthermore, the purpose of residential schools was to “assimilate Aboriginal children into mainstream Canadian society by disconnecting them from their families and communities and severing all ties with language, customs and beliefs (Chansonneuve, 2005, p.5). The colonial/Canadian government has offered recompense payment to the Aboriginal people affected by residential schools. The Indian Residential Schools Compensation process included four different payment options, the first payment option included compensation through civil and criminal lawsuits initiated by Survivors (Reimer & Bombay 2010). The second option is the alternative dispute resolution process, which was intended as a less formal, faster alternative to the courts (Reimer & Bombay 2010). The last two options were the common experience payment, which offers a financial package to all former students and the independent assessment process established to compensate Survivors who came forward as victims (Reimer & Bombay, 2010). Common experience payments impacted some individuals in a positive way by relieving financial stress.
