In order to understand what theories best explain the process of discrimination it is important to have an understanding of the term discrimination. The research shows that discrimination occurs when you are treated less favourably than another person.
Thompson suggests (2006, pg13) discrimination is when:
‘A person or group suffer a detriment because they are identified as different in terms of gender, race/ethnicity, and sexual identity and so on’.
It could be said that Thompson is aware of the various areas of discrimination such as racism; sexism and ageism however these are only examples of how discrimination manifests itself for people and what Thompson research suggests does not look at the causal factors. As individuals we would expect to be treated fairly and as an equal. Equality is about fairness in society regardless, for example, of a person’s social background or disabilities. With the ability to recognise that historically certain groups of people with particular characteristics for example race, sexuality and religious beliefs have experienced direct discrimination. When picking up a national or local newspaper or turning on the television we see and hear examples of discrimination and oppression occurring.
We can recognise some aspects of oppression but many are embedded into everyday existence and quite often go unnoticed. Where I currently work for example has no disabled access to our upstairs training room. This seriously puts an environmental
Discrimination is when someone has a bias opinion on a specific crowd of people due to their race, sex, religion, or order of rank. This basically goes hand in hand with the phrase judging a book by its cover meaning the person with the negative opinion will not give the other individual a fair chance for the reason being they are being stereotypical and not thinking of the other person’s talent, or character. A modern day example of discrimination would be if a male employer were to compensate a female employee a lower pay due to her gender. At some time in everyone’s life due to today society, we have all been victimized by discrimination. Whether it may be a dirty look from a random person, or the way you dress, talk, and even look.
Equality is the term for treating people fairly and offering the same chances, it’s not all about treating everyone in the same way, but recognising everyone is different, and they all have very different needs, but making sure they are met.
This means that a person suffers from more then one discrimination and prejudice, such as their race and gender. This can have major effects on them as a person.
People are discriminated for their race, age, situation, and even discussions. Just like how blacks are discriminated in To Kill a Mockingbird, today's society also discriminates gays, lesbians, and bisexuals, transgenders, and even immigrants. Many people today are now being treated differently for what type of
Discrimination can be defined as the differential treatment or judgment against a group such as class status, nationality, religion, etc. There are several reasons why people may think people of color are "bad" and get discriminated against more then those who are White or Asian. Maybe it is because for every three colored men at least one will serve a prison sentence. Many studies target those with colored skin because they were the first kind of people to go to a jail. Continuing, there are several kind different forms of discrimination (institutionalized, systematic, contextual, and individual acts of discrimination). First, the institutionalized information is based on the criminal record or behavior. Second, the systematic is discrimination in the criminal justice system. Third, the contextual information is based on particular crimes. Lastly, individual acts of discrimination is based the acts of the individual. Discrimination is revealed to the individual in many different aspects and treatment received based on group affiliation such as nationality, classes status, and much more. For example, in law enforcement they see a woman down a street known where prostitutes are. What the police officer does not know if the woman is coming from a bar, and she is walking home. The police officer pulls over, stops her, and arrests
Equality can mean different things to different people; some people believe that equality means treating everyone the same. However you can not treat everyone as equal due to the fact that everyone has different backgrounds, life experiences, skills and knowledge. So no two people can really ever be the same. Individuality can be a positive attribute in all aspects of life. Equality can be more accurately described as when people are given equal opportunities giving them access to the same rights, choices and resources no matter of their gender, race, age, sexual orientation, religious belief or cultural differences.
Discrimination has many meaning and many different ways people can discriminate against others. Discriminations can be as simple as a person making a judgment against someone else by the way they dress or the way they speak or it can be the people are discriminated against (out casted/left out) because they choose to be different or have a disability or different colour of skin or even religion. Discrimination is unfair treatment of a person action based on prejudice which someone has of that individual and it can affect the targeted individual physically, this could be self-harm or eating disorders, intellectually, the individual won’t want to go to work because of how they are being
These may include being treated differently because of a person’s race, ability, age, gender or sexuality.
I though this particular quotation from the preface of Exile and Pride doses and amazing job in addressed the linkage between the multiple variables of discrimination and how they operate collectively to contribute to injustice and bigotry towards certain groups of people. In the 19th century, sexual and gender non-normality (androgynous, cisgender, transgender lesbian, gays...) in western culture was considered a disability manly because people were ignorant to sciences
To understand what discrimination is, we first have to understand the meanings of diversity, equality and inclusion within our society and social health care.
What is discrimination you ask? Discrimination is the unjust treatment of different categories of people or things. The 3 things that I’ll talk about is race, age, and gender.
Oppression is the abuse of a higher authority's power to mistreat others and is the condition of feeling negatively affected by surrounding stress. It often describes the situation where an individual or group is victimized by a greater and more powerful influence. Unlike oppression, fairness has a positive connotation. Fairness is equal opportunity that is offered to the whole society, with consideration to the individual's situation. Similar to fairness, equality also encourages the same opportunities for the society. Equality is having the same value, rights, and treatment for all people regardless of their situation. Contrasting fairness, equality only gives society the same opportunities, assuming that everyone is alike physically and
Further, discrimination occurs when a person is excluded from participation, or explicitly targeted for participation, or is segregated or provided separate treatment or is denied benefits or provided different benefits or the benefits are provided in a different manner than from others based on a person’s race, color or national origin, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation or political beliefs.
Discrimination can be based on race, religion, and political affiliation. Racial discrimination involves treating an individual or a group of people differently as they belong to a dissimilar race. Additionally, it refers to directing certain behaviors and actions towards someone
What is equality? Is it just a political nomenclature or an ideological concept? Or is about working towards creating a fairer society in which each individual can enjoy his/her rights and freedom without any judgement considering that “[w]e will never have true civilization until we have learned to recognize the rights of others.” Will Rogers (1924, p210).
