To everyone discussing the wars, as well as, the advantages and disadvantages, I want to discuss the reasons why the British lost the Revolutionary War and what they should have done. While the British had the strongest empire, they lost the war against the colonies. I believe the biggest reason for this is that Parliament and King George III in a way bullied the colonies and forced a military confrontation with them. The best solution would have been a political one, which would have been more effective in receiving loyalty from the American colonies. In addition, John Dickinson strived so hard to explain this to the colonies, as he believed it provided stronger results, proving that this would have been the route. Furthermore, the French
The British military was considered the strongest in the world at the outreach of fighting between England and the American colonies in 1775. Britain had just defeated France and the Indians in the Seven Years War and had attained its prominence as a world’s superpower. Yet despite Britain’s overpowering military dominance, the British found themselves unable to subdue General Washington and the American colonies. The American’s success in achieving independence during the American Revolution was not due to General Washington’s strategic skill but by numerous British blunders. The British mistakes during
As Benjamin Franklin once said, “No gains without pain.” This could not be more of a true statement when speaking of the American Revolution. There are so many factors that are said to have caused it, that it's hard to determine what never needed to happen. Because of the French and Indian War, the British were suffering from debt. They needed the find a way out; therefore, new laws and acts were established. If the British would have treated the colonists as friends instead of their instant way out of dept, we could have never seen independence. Another reason that the American Revolution couldn’t have been avoided; because the colonists had already learned to fight, were tired of British
The Revolutionary War started in April of 1775, with the battles at Lexington and Concord. This war would mark the beginnings of the United States as a nation, fighting against the most powerful fighting force at the time, the British Army and Navy. This conflict would go on for a brutal 6 years until the final British surrender at Yorktown on October 17, 1781. In the end, both sides have lost tens of thousands of men, but how did it all start? The Conflict has its star with the rising tensions between the colonists and the British crown in the aftermath of the French-Indian War in 1763. The financing of the war had caused Britain to be in heavy debt after mobilizing troops to defend colonies. To offset this debt Britain began taxing its colonies, introducing the Townshend and Stamp acts. This act of taxation would anger the 13 American colonies as this was seen as an attack against their rights and to protest this, colonist boycotted and protested, but were met with the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770. Tensions would rise, and the Boston Tea Party would begin on December 16, 1773. This would lead to the deployment of British troops in Boston and the eventual start of the war. But after all, it may not justified. The Revolutionary war cannot be justified only by a resentment of taxes on imports and a distrust of an Empire that had only finished fighting a war to defend its colony.
During the American Revolution, The British and the American colonists had many difficulties and challenges to overcome. Both sides had great disadvantages and advantages, but the in the end the colonists had the most advantages and won their independence from the British. Some of the most important reasons the colonists won was that they were fighting on their own continent and knew the land better than the British, they received help from other European countries such as France and they had a well-experienced General; George Washington.
Introduction: Why did the Patriots win the revolutionary war? Afterall, they did not have an army half as big as the British did. It was through the support of the citizens, the supplies sent to them, the strength of the soldiers. In other words, the three main reasons for their victory were popular support, leadership, and group motivation. If the Patriots did not have these things factored in, they may not have won. Sebby
The outcomes of the Revolutionary war paved the way towards an expansion of territory sought out to respect civil liberties by outlawing slavery , reforming the education platform and is considered one of the most important legislative acts of the confederation congress. Thomas Jefferson was a key player as he created a vision with an empire based on principles novel at the time. On July 13, 1787 the Northwest Ordinance came into place, a new legislation which expanded the original 13 states westward not only acquiring land, but provided a framework for educational organization and political incorporation in the new territories.
In addition to that, the British Empire still had the loyalty of at least a third, of the colonists living in the thirteen North American colonies that revolted. The American colonists were in economic and political chaos; the states were not even effectively unified and the national government was largely powerless and ineffective. Almost all the advantages went to the British, and yet the American colonies won their independence, how? There are a number of factors that resulted in the loss of the English colonies in North America, for example taxation, and no representation. Not only that however if the English had represented them in Parliament and if they gave the colonies a chance to agree on taxations, they could have successfully reestablished their control and avoided losing.
While there are numerous contributing factors to America’s success in achieving independence, the most critical factor can be attributed to the series of British mistakes throughout the conflict. Prior to the onset of the Revolutionary War, the British government faced serious challenges, both politically and fiscally. The conclusion of the French and Indian War coupled with the fighting in Europe, India and the West Indies, left Britain with considerable debt and with few to little allies. The British government saw America as a way
There were many events that took place in the 1760’s and 1770’s that led to the Revolutionary war. During these years the British did many things that upset the colonists. These upset colonists would eventually get sick of all the British ways and fight for their freedom.
“When the Revolution began the Americans were already in a weak position. They had scramble to put together an army (albeit not well trained) and a tiny, ineffective navy. While strengths were hard to find , their weaknesses were obvious.” (The American Revolution) This is exactly why the British were much a better fighting force. Great Britain had the more money, due to this they were so much more power.
Many factors contributed to the British losing the American Revolutionary War. By the 1770’s the American colonists were not socially, religiously, or culturally connected to Britain. The colonists has their own ways of life and thus were not British by culture. The majority of the colonists had immigrated to America to escape the rigid class structures of Britain and Europe.
The Revolutionary War started on April 19, 1775 at Lexington and Concord. America was very much unprepared with no central government or army. The congress stepped up as the government and began to organize an army. The Revolutionary War did not end until September 3, 1783 with the signing of the final peace treaty between America and Great Britain. The victory in the Revolution War led to the birth of a new independent nation.
The British had very few, but significant disadvantages/weaknesses. Since America was large and unfamiliar territory for them, it was troublesome to conquer and to hold territory. The British were 3,000 miles from home so it often took months for military orders, troops, and supplies to arrive from Britain after it was is sent out. And also due to distance, they couldn’t communicate with their leaders, reinforcements, and supply lines. They didn’t send their top military leaders, which caused problems. Their Red Coats and militant style made them easy targets to identify in the wilderness or on open fields. Their soldiers were fighting for a King, not for their own cause. They lacked motivation to crush the opposition from the onset of the war. They were also over-confident and cocky. Their goal was persuade the Americans to give up their claims of independence, which was an extremely rigorous objective. Also, the country had been at war for years and citizens were tired of war and war taxes.
Before they had any allies, the Americans forced John Burgoyne to surrender his army of close to 6,000 men after defeating the British at Saratoga. This was one of the most telling moments of the war. The British tried to sue for peace after this defeat ,without offering independence. The US turned down the offer and the war continued. This is also why the French joined the war to help the Americans. King Louis XVI assented to negotiations for an alliance just two days after learning of the British defeat. British support for the war fell after the defeat at Yorktown in 1781. 18,900 US and French troops put Cornwallis' army in a corner. 11,000 of those troops were
The Revolutionary War began with Britain losing the French and Indian war which ended in 1763. This left the British with a huge debt they had to pay, so they ended up charging the American Colonists. In the end, the American colonists couldn’t handle it anymore thus started the Revolutionary War. As you know the American Colonists won the Revolutionary War by sharpshooters, strategy, alliances, and even because of their knowledge of the land. At first, the American Colonists were outnumbered and out-skilled by the British.
