On March 22 and 23, Sabine Wade, Underwriting Manager, met with her team members to discuss the importance of Diversity and Inclusion (D&I). Employees with Colonial and CU Members’ Underwriting, Appraisal and Prefunding departments got together to talk about the company’s D&I vision, current demographics of our workforce and took part in a discussion about what D&I means to each member of the group. The teams began with an icebreaker where each person was instructed to pull tissues out of a box. They were able to take as many tissues as they wanted, with the twist being they were asked to share things about themselves that matched the number of tissues taken. n a childcare setting it is vital that each and every practitioner is aware of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy and procedure and it is also vital that this policy is implemented in the everyday provision. With practitioners being aware of this policy they should ensure the activities they plan and provide involves equal opportunities and that every child in the setting is also treated equally.

The policies must take into account the rights of all individuals and groups within the school as well as considering the ways policies work to ensure equality, inclusion. Policies also pay regards to the values and practice, which are part of all aspect of school life.
Diversity refers to our differences such as culture, beliefs, values, views and life experiences. The concept of diversity is to accept, respect and embrace our differences. When people with these differences unite and share the same group or organization we see a diverse environment. Working in a childcare setting, we have the potential to work with an abundance of diversity. This can be very rewarding but can also pose challenges. Positively, we have the opportunity to promote the sense of individuality, sense of pride and belonging by providing a safe and nurturing environment. One of the objectives that the team discussed was diversity in the workplace. Major corporations have encountered issues concerning diversity in the work place. Our team can directly relate to this subject in the workplace since all of us are diverse minorities in our individual work place. When the duchess of Windsor once said “A woman cannot be too rich or too thin.” No this does not apply to man. Men hold a different standard then woman are, it is okay for man to date woman with a lot of money and nothing is ever said about the man except that he must really love her. But if we flip it the other way around and a woman mad the statement that a man could never be to rich or too thin, then we have a whole new ball game. Woman would be ridiculed for making such a statement. People would say she is only dating him for his money, she is nothing but a gold digger, she does not love him she only loves the things he can buy her, or the places he can take her, she is just looking for someone to take care of her. They way society looks down on woman is not fair. It is discrimination to say that a woman cannot be happy with a man because he makes good money and is educated without people judging her. They always assume that there is an underling reason that she is with a wealthy older or younger man, and it can never be simply because she truly loves him.

The Readings for Diversity and Social Justice did an excellent job of discussing the many perspectives and factors that come into play when dealing with the issues of oppression, as did the video Separate and Unequal revealed the ongoing struggle of desegregation of schools across the nation following the Civil Rights movements. But there was a fault that I personally felt prevented the whole story from being told. There are many legislations relating to diversity, equality and discrimination, on October 2010, the Equality Act 2010 came into effect. This Act replaced previous legislations (such as the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995). This act ensures that people are protected from discrimination in the work place and in wider society.
A diversity statement is located on most colleges and universities websites. The purpose of many of these statements is to show colleges and universities are committed to diversity on their campuses. Leaders of the colleges and universities believe colleges should give students the ability to see a global society on their campuses. This global society includes individuals from all walks of life and from different backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses.
I find that the concepts of diversity, inclusion and social justice to be important because they build on each other and have the power to change the world. When all of these aspects work together and are acknowledged then we are able to work toward changing social norms and creating aspects in society that are focused on equity, rather than equality. Of course, social justice should be the goal that we as individuals want to achieve in liberating areas of our that have limited and restrained others. I connect diversity and appreciating diversity with being the foundation to this equation of equality because individuals need to understand that there will be differences between people. I enjoy the statement on, “… Who is in the room?” because it starts to explain the variations in personal characteristics within a group of people. This is going to be part of my position as an RA within Resident Life because a floor’s residence are going to have wide range in their own diversities through their age, sexual orientation, journeys to get to college, race and ethnicity, etc. I am proud to have experienced the things I have and lived and go to high school in such a place like Aurora, CO to where I was able to live and embrace a diverse community. I came to define this diversity to be normal, but coming up to CSU and Fort Collins has shown me how much of Colorado does not have the same kind of standards. The event started with cocktails and networking. This was an opportunity to met other attendees, donate to the organizations or pick you up some free dental dam. The discussion began with an ice breaker game. We played the game "Mad Libs" with a sexual twist. Mad Libs is a phrasal template word game where one player prompts others for a list of words to substitute for blanks in a story, before reading the – often comical or nonsensical – story aloud. We broke into three groups and each group was assigned a word. The three words used were "Relationships, Sex, and HIV". Unfortunately, I couldn't keep up with the narratives but they were a ball of fun!
