“92 BLX The Beat of The Bay. This is DJ Rodsky” boomed the radio into my preschool classroom at St. Mary Catholic School. My best friend Emani's dad was featured on the radio that morning, and my teacher let the whole class tune in. While in may seem like an odd occurrence to listen to a rap station in a preschool setting, it highlights the attitude towards diversity that shaped my formative education. Instead of the hand-picked, curated diversity that sometimes plagues schools, this encounter demonstrates the raw, unalderterated diversity that kindles appreciation for all races, genders, backgrounds, or affiliations without any reservations. This unique experience from such a young age paints a clear memory in my mind that denotes that diversity is important because it gives people a new perspective on life. People that move through life totally unaffected by the reality of diversity, sheltered from the harmless encroachment on their social organization, lack the ability to be able to fully understand people from different backgrounds or races that they meet in the real world. Being exposed to diversity in all forms at a young age helps develop in people humility, compassion, consideration, …show more content…
Mary Catholic School manifests the imperativness of diversity that derives from the reflection of the real world it presents on a small, comprehensible scale. Confidently stepping into the real world without having been adequately prepared by exposure to people that possess different characteristics from one's own sets one up for failure in an unfamiliar environment. People that do not experience diversity are ill-equipped to handle real life diversity because they have never learned how to deal with it. Having been presented with opportunities to handle diversity in my past, I am able to manage it in everyday life, which is a vital skill crucial to becoming a functioning part of
The concept of diversity has allowed me to learn about other identities and the importance of representation. My experiences and exposure on campus have introduced me to diverse perspectives, religions, sexualities, and cultural members of our community. My roommate during my sophomore year was Jewish, and actively participated in Jewish traditions. Through our conversation
The diversity and location of NC State is what draws me to this University. From the first moment I stepped onto the campus, to the tours and talking to current students, I felt the excitement of the campus. NC State is a rich community that is strong because of the variety of classes, teachers, students, and activities, and for the array of perspectives and experiences. From attending a small school in a small town, then transitioning to a larger high school, this feels like a natural next step.
This portion of our textbook basically is telling us that Title VII prohibited employers from treating an employee favorable or unfavorable due to religious practices. The textbook tells us, rather than, being treated differently, employers must make reasonable accommodations for these employees. “a reasonable accommodation is one that the employer can implement to enable the qualified person to perform essential job functions without causing undue hardship to the employer” (Bell, 2013, pg. 438).
Since we are children we are told what religion we practice or should be influenced by , but when did we truly get an option to explore and learn our own faith? I have and extended diversity, when it comes to different cultures, religions, and even personalities. Both of my parents claim to be catholic but we never really practiced our religion. I wasn't knowledgeable of catholicism or the bible, i just knew there was a God. That changed for me when i was ten years old. My little sister almost didn't make it at birth, reason being is that her heart wasn't completely formed. However, the doctors managed to save her life, and it was the happiest yet scariest moments for me and still is, but the dread doesn't stop there. I spent most of my childhood in
This conference will allow me to network with other professionals and vendors in the private, non-profit industry and in academia. We will be able to take the pulse of what is happening for tools, technologies, and processes, and hear ideas we weren’t even aware of. This conference covers wide array of diversity discourse; for example, a window into a few of the concurrent sessions:
The purpose of this year’s diversity month was to address certain diversity-related issues. We planned three discussions on topics that affect the daily life and performance of workers. The topics were work life balances, generational challenges, and political correctness. We decided on these topics after careful observation of interactions between workers . Suggestions from some workers also made the need for a safe space to discuss these issues clear . Across the PwC network, a week in September is dedicated to celebrating diversity. Last year, our activities included a mentoring program and a multicultural celebration. This year we decided to spread the activities over a month because of the different schedules. We also wanted to make
I can contribute to diversity at The San Francisco Bay School by sharing my perspective, experience, and background with other students. Diversity is not only about race and culture, but also how people perceive the world. I am a visual learner, someone who prefers to learn by seeing examples. Even though I am a visual learner, that does not mean I do not understand different learning styles. I believe you must change your perspective and be open to new ideas. My perspective on learning is that there is always another way to solve a problem. Another way I can contribute to diversity at Bay is through experience. When collaborating with others for group projects, I can use my knowledge to do research and do my part to get the job done. For example,
University athletic department, responsible for marketing, ticket sales, customer relations, corporate relations, student relations, alumni connections, and community connections. The diversity program has been lax at best, with half of the staff comprised by student interns, adhering to a standardized diversity protocol has proven to be a challenge. Ushering in the new year, with a critical cultural crisis looming over America, it is imperative that businesses evaluate and implement diversity protocols that exceed expectations, in order to protect the university, employees, and customers. Taking the interns turnover into consideration, is it vital to create an effective and comprehensive diversity program. Whereas, the interns
I plan to contribute many ideas, work, and support to the Leaders in Engineering Excellence and Diversity Program. The program itself is an opportunity to meet other students in the same field as me who face similar challenges. Not to mention that I find the values of creating a supportive group parallel to my own and would love to contribute.
I have never held a management/upper leadership position; unfortunately, after consulting with my friends and family, I also do not know anyone who is in a leadership position. My discussion this week will purely be how I believe diversity training should be implemented for managers.
In this paper, I will be speaking about my participants diversity characteristics and how those characteristics helped shape her life experiences. Apart from her diversity characteristics, I will talk about the challenges she had throughout her lifetime and the strengths that helped her overcome her challenges. I will also talk about possible goals and interventions that could of improved Santa’s life, if she would had applied them.
I have changed tremendously over the past few months in terms of my self-awareness and understanding of issues concerning diversity. My experiences in the past few months have been crucial in my development as a counselor, and I am very grateful for this time in my life. Thanks to this class, I now have multiple tools to work with in terms of counseling diverse individuals, as listening to the discussions in class from my peers have given me new perspectives in terms of how worldviews differ person-to-person. The MSJCC’s have helped me learn the competencies required in order to be effective as a counselor, as such standards as counselor-client relationship were stressed in the MSJCC’s. The articles I read concerning issues centered on diversity were awakening, in that I previously did not pay attention to how unconscious oppression existed in our daily lives, even while doing our best to avoid overt oppression and discrimination. I am now more self-aware and conscious of my privileges as a Caucasian Christian male college student, and I am being sure to use these privileges for the progression of how society views diverse people. I use my privilege to be heard by family members and friends alike when I correct them when they start degrading diverse individuals, and I am able to connect with my diverse family members, friends, and customers when interacting with them. I am able to connect with these individuals on a more effective level because I understand that these
Diversity for me is central to having a successful, creative, dynamic education environment where everyone is welcomed. Without diversity, I think we are less creative individually and collectively. I can describe diversity as a collection of people who have their own unique qualities, who are different and sharing and embracing each other’s individual beliefs, cultures, and thoughts. The differences could be cultural, racial, or learning styles.
Two blocks from my house was Slavens k-8, one of the fastest growing and top rated schools in all of Colorado. For 10 years, I was the beneficiary of an exemplary teaching and an overwhelmingly caring environment. However, Slavens did lack one fundamental aspect of a continually expanding world: an utter lack of diversity. For proper prospective, the 90’s show Friends was worlds more
