As Mahatma Gandhi said, “No culture can live, if it attempts to be exclusive” (Mahatma). Our culture identifies who we are and how we behave in social environments and provides us with a foundation in which to live our lives and raise our families. Each individual culture has certain customs and courtesies that are important. Exposure to the cultures of others can be intimidating and can leave a person feeling confused and unsure about how they fit in (Schaefer 60). Culture shock can leave a person feeling out of place in an unfamiliar culture (Schaefer 60). Our diverse societies demand understanding and acceptance of other cultures. Learning and understanding these cultures before being
In recent history massive wars, resulting in countless lives lost, have been waged simply over not belonging to the ‘right’ or ‘our’ race. Most people would agree the concept of disliking someone simply because they look different and belong to another race, is pure ignorance. Although there are people in the world who judge intelligence and character based on skin color we believe that everyone is the same on the inside and have similar if not better ideas than the rest of the world. I believe there is racism everywhere, the point is not what other thinks about how they are treat, in some other countries the racism is over social class, economic, class, a person who has a pink mark under the eye. We created these differences as always to feel better about ourself, so we look down to some people.
It is important to understand our diversity in America because not everyone here believes or lives with the same standards. What may seem acceptable in one location, may be considered rude or offensive in another. It is also beneficial to be more knowledgeable of other people’s culture and how they interact among each other to create healthy relationships with new people. While researching the big problems on racism and reading through a good amount of articles I came to find that, people that discriminate other colored people makes them feel more superior. They believe that their own race is better than any other race. Study show that racism is practically taught at home, if the parents are racist then their kids are going to be racist as well. Going through some articles it says that we’re all racist in our own way, we may not say certain things out in the open but we do think it. We stereotype because of looks or color, our society has come to us putting labels on colored people. Racism leads to being bullied, we teach our kids to discriminate another type of kind especially when they don't look like their
