Title:
Does elevating the head of the bed reduce the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP)?
Introduction:
According to Polit and Beck (2012,p.3) “research is a systematic review inquiry that uses disciplined methods to answer a question or solve problems. The ultimate goal of research is to develop, improve and expand knowledge”. Research in nursing can produce new knowledge into nursing practice, develop and improve methods of caring and trial the efficacy of care (Gerrish, K and Lacey A, 2007). However, research according to Hockey (1984) in the first edition of the book, research is an attempt to increase the sum of what is known, usually referred to as a “body of knowledge” by the discovery of new facts or relationships

The research question is ‘ Does elevating the head of the bed reduce the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia?’
Search:
There are many ways to search for evidence base practice. After a topic has been chosen and the question developed, the literature can be easy to search. Draft outline of the project before beginning to search. Latest information regarding the topic that was chosen available at the website. You may begin to search for literature via an internet search engine. How to access appropriate information from proper website? An early chore in carrying out an electronic search is to classify keywords to generate the search. From the lecture, the attending student was given access for the academic library of University of Huddersfield. The student needs to log in to portal plus via Internet access. Go for library services or summon and search for the article, type the key words into search column provided by the electronic base. For example the research topic is “does elevating the head of the bed reduce the risk of ventilator-associated pneumonia?” The key words are “ventilator-associated pneumonia” and “head of bed elevation". You have to restrict the search by limiting a certain type of page for example only research reports; to
As a provider of care, professional nurses depend on research, theories, and evidence based practice to guide the care they provide to patients. Nurses deliver care to their patients based on information they have learned through many years of school and training. Training for nurses and other providers of care is founded on theories, research, and evidence based practice in the healthcare field. Theories, research, and evidence based practice are all important for providing care to patients and each can be used in a different manner depending on the situation. Clinicians often use research based evidence to design and implement care that is high-quality and cost effective for patients. Evidence based practice can be used to provide care to patients in a steadily changing clinical environment. (PDF page 8-9). Nursing theories are frequently used as frameworks for establishing nursing care interventions and assessing
Evidence based practice is an integral part of nursing care. According to the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, evidence based practice is defined as, “the conscientious use of current best evidence in making decisions about patient care.” (AMSN) The use of evidence based practice has drastically improved patient outcomes, increased quality and safety of healthcare, and reduced costs for facilities. (Melnyk, 2016) In this paper I will provide the history of evidence based practice, how it has already been incorporated and impacted healthcare, and why it is important to nursing and healthcare as a whole.
Even though evidence informed practice helps improve healthcare, there are still a few limitations. One main limitation is lack of time and accessibility. The best quality evidence is usually very difficult to locate, a busy nurse may not have the time to delve deep to find reliable sources. (NICE 2007) However there are now
An annotated bibliography is a catalogue of citations to books, documents and articles with the purpose of the annotation being to inform the reader of the precision, relevance and quality of the sources cited (Davis, 2009). Evidence based practice enables health care professionals to effectively use current verification during the decision-making procedure (Sacket et al 2000). Healthcare professionals use a hierarchy of evidence as a guide to define the reliability and importance of the evidence based research; with the evidence that is founded further upon
Research can be used in many methods, for example: questionnaires, television, leaflets, books etc. it allows us to keep up to date on the new findings or discoveries e.g. a new type of cancer or a new vaccination. Research is the investigation into
Another important barrier is nursing education. Nurses who graduated many years ago were not taught evidence-based practice and even current schools focus too much researching rather than how to implement current research into care (AJN, 2012). This lack of knowledge on how to implement may stem from the lack of knowledge on how to read and interpret research data or that nurses might feel overwhelmed due to the fact that there is so much and might not know how to narrow what is important or how to read all of it (Brown et al., 2009). In the Tacia study (2015), advanced care nurses could easily point out
WHAT IS RESEARCH? It is a planned process whereby information is collected for a specific purpose, analysed and reported.
The purpose of this document is a critical study and analysis of the oral care provided by nursing staff as part of the Ventilator Care Bundle (VCB) and to assess whether the frequency of mouth care performed is related to the prevention of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) in patients mechanically ventilated (Zilberberg et al. 2009).
Locate a total of five research databases or collections related to your topic. Each research database description is worth 30 points. You may search for these in various locations, e.g., the Internet, an intranet at work, print publications, etc. You may NOT choose the databases that are already familiar to you – MEDLINE, PUBMED (which also indexes MEDLINE), GOOGLE SCHOLAR, and CINAHL. Instead, you are expected to expand your knowledge of evidence-based sources. Places to help you begin include your textbook, which lists databases and websites that report research. The Chamberlain online library (http://library.chamberlain.edu) gives you access to several databases and provide tutorials for searching. Government sites such as those at the National Institutes of Health offer collections of research on a variety of subjects. The key to choosing the databases is that each contains research-based evidence that also pertains to your topic of interest.
According to Gale and Schaffer (2009) explains that nursing comprises autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, well or sick and in all settings. Nurses promote health, prevent illnesses and care for the sick and disabled people. Other roles of nurses include promotion of a safe environment, participation in shaping health policies, research and system management (Gale & Schaffer, 2009). Research is important in nursing because it validates and refines exiting knowledge and generates new knowledge. According to Newhouse (2007) nursing research helps build an evidence-based practice for nursing. EBP in turn contributes evidence to the effective care of patients. Studies have supported the conclusion that patient outcomes are substantially improved when health care is based on evidence from well-defined studies versus tradition or clinical expertise and opinions alone. The ultimate goal of nursing is therefore an evidence-based practice that promotes quality, cost effective outcomes for patients, families, healthcare providers and the healthcare system (Closson, 2005; Salbach, Jaglal, Korner-Bitensky, Rappolt & Davis, 2007). EBP evolves from the integration of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient needs and values (Aarons, Wells, Zagursky, Fettes & Palinkas,
Research is a process of systematic inquiry that aims to develop, refine and expand the body of knowledge of the chosen area (Polit and Beck, 2010). Nurses are expected to be able to understand and increasingly conduct research in order to base and develop their professional practice, guide their interventions and utilise the best available clinical evidence (NMC, 2008).The UWE e-search engine was used to search for research articles as it had a lot of databases relevant to my chosen topic. A cross search was conducted as this enabled me to conduct search through various data bases at once, Firstly, I searched on ‘your subject’, which gives specialist advice, research tutorials and web sites for different subjects, I choose Health and Social Care as my subject, searched for databases for health and social care. I searched the British Nursing Index (BNI) via Proquest because BNI is a UK nursing and midwifery database, covering over 240 UK journals with English
Why should nurses incorporate research? Nurses should incorporate research in their scope of practice to deliver the highest and safest quality health care. This is based on proven scientific evaluation, peer review, combined with one’s clinical experience, critical thinking, and competency. (Stevens, 2013), “research produces the most reliable knowledge about the likelihood that a given strategy will change a patient's current health status into desired outcomes”. With these analyses, I believe that nurses can achieve great outcomes and patient satisfaction. However in our class lecture, Chamberlain College of Nursing (CCN, 2015), states that “research yields evidence upon which nurses may base their practice, i.e., evidence-based practice”. In a nut-shell, nurses’ combine research to improve their scope of practice, innovate nursing concept, and enlarge nursing knowledge (Hood, 2014, p. 243).
Ventilator-associated pneumonia is a bacterial infection that occurs in the lower respiratory system within the first 48 hours of endotrachal intubation (Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper, Bucher, & Camera, 2011). Although any hospital patient is susceptible to pneumonia, ventilator dependent patients are at the highest risk of acquiring pneumonia. The purpose of this paper is to identify the risk factors, incidences, and preventions of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) using a quantitative research study performed in Malaysia. “The aim of this
