A plethora of reasons exist as to why a certain sport might signal importance to a state, but in Indiana, the sport happens to standout on a whole different level. Current Southeast Dubois Superintendent, Rick Allen, commented on why Indiana high school basketball remains superior saying, “One reason Indiana high school basketball is such a standout of a sport in Indiana is because of the community support behind the team” (Allen 2). The era of basketball between 1911-present remains crucial today not only for the big schools’ gyms in Indiana, but also for small towns gyms such as Huntingburg, Loogootee, Tell City, Ferdinand, and numerous others.
Sports teams, or professional athletic organization, are extremely important institutions within a city or region. They can help connect people with places, and through this loyalty, a sense of civic pride can be seen. Furthermore, the multi-billion dollar industry sports produces effects that can impact individuals and communities. In recent years dozens of new sports stadiums have been built throughout the country, with major funding coming from public subsidies. The aim of this paper is to analyze the positive and negative impacts that come with these subsidies.
When a men’s teams win a game, they receive so much money per game for their program, but the women’s team do not make any money when they win games in tournaments. Andrew Zimbalist admits, “The total value of a victory in the men’s tournament is approximately $1.56 million. By contrast, a win in the women’s tournament brings a reward of exactly zero dollars” (1). If the male athletes are going to give money to the winner of the men’s tournament, there should as well be money given to the winner in the women’s tournament as well. It does not make sense that one would receive so much money for their program when the other can also win and bring no money back for their program. To me, this shows that people think the women’s tournament is not as important as the men’s tournament. People tend to think that the men’s team is better because the men are stronger and faster, but women’s games can be just as entertaining as the men’s
The use of video games has become a norm for many people and families. They may be used to relax after a long day of work, or as a way for the family to all participate in something together. Many people view video games as just another form of entertainment, but could they actually be more?
Sports play an integral part in todays society in not only keeping people healthy and in shape but also make for fun activity and competition. While everyone tends to focus on exercise and enjoyment, they forget the importance of having a quality facility in order to practice their specific sport or hobby. Sport facilities themselves have revolutionized the way sports are being played nowadays, especially on the professional level. Advancements are being made on a daily basis to make the experience great for both athletic participants and the on looking spectators. Specifically though, today we will focus on the Staples Center located in Los Angeles, CA and talk about its overall history while also outlining the tremendous effect it has had
The factors that make the game more exciting are the reaction of the live audience and watching the popular athletes that play the sport. There is abundance of money in the advertisement of men’s basketball that will lead to high television ratings and a high percentage of attendance in their games (Silverman, 2015). For this reason critics believe that men’s basketball is more exciting to watch because of the popular players, the live audience and also the high quality of advertising and screening. Though the previous argument is valid, there is a lack of funding in women’s basketball that serves as a hindrance to acquire recognition (Bailey, 2013). If women’s basketball advertising are given the same amount of money that is given to men, their games will be more exciting because there will be more live viewers and higher quality
The University of Connecticut women’s basketball is arguably one of the most dominant programs in college sports. The big criticism of women’s basketball is a lack of consistency. Uconn has been an unstoppable force for the last fifteen years, which could be a main reason why it receives so much judgement. After winning their fourth straight national title in the 2015-16 season, the amount of criticism has never been higher. With Uconn being so dominant in recent years, many people feel that their dominance is ruining the women's game, even Boston Globe columnist, Dan Shaughnessy commented on the team, causing the team and staff to fight back with comparisons and opinions of their own.
Exotic animals, motocross cages and acrobats are substituted for dazzling dunks, jaw-dropping shots and crossovers that make your ankles hurt. But just like circus, the real story isn’t about what happens at center stage. It’s about the conflicts that brew outside the game and overshadow the action on the court.
The data tables included in this paper were self-constructed. The data was collected from personal research of different areas in the athletic field of interest, specifically in basketball. Interdisciplinary approaches included were history, economics, and psychology. The history involved included the background and the initial reason for the creation of this law. This essay provides examples of women and their experience indirectly and directly tied to the law. It compares using some statistical data the economics of money spent of male compared to females. It also brings in the media’s appeal for male athletics because of the revenue they bring in. This essay also includes examples
This article completely opens my eyes to the definition and importance of “rest.” Rest is when you free yourself from daily activities that cause you stress. It is also activities you do to receive a break from your daily fixed routines. It is common for people to categorize rest as a “leftover activity,” which it is not. I find it intriguing that “rest,” doesn’t have to be submissive or passive. For example, if you tend to be a hermit crab that stays home to do work, then a long walk around the park or even going for an intense run will allow your mind to wander
Equity and access are two guiding principles in the studies of sociology of sport (Evans, 1993).
Basketball is one of the biggest sports in America. It is also popular around the worlds. Men’s basketball, in particular, is given much more preference in American society. Many would argue that the comparison of the two simply boils down to sexism in sports, where people downgrade the strength and athletic ability of women in our society according to typical gender roles. However, there may be more confounding factors that are generally overlooked.
American society has many different types’ sports from all around the world. For example, the main two contemporary sports are basketball and football. Both sports require people, a ball, and open area to play in. However, these two sports are played differently. By comparing and contrasting basketball and football, we can examine them in terms of how they’re played, the amount of people in each teams, and the location the sports are being played in.
Beside the mental effects of gaming, lay the physical effects. Another belief of gaming is that it is physically threatening, and if not taken in moderation, that may be true, but at face value, some video games can be a very useful tool for physical fitness. “Serious” games, as mentioned previously, are games that are designed for personal improvement, but as stated by Mark Baxter, “serious” games are just a subgenre of a more encompassing genre known as lifestyle games. According to Baxter, these games lack the more academic focus typically associated with “serious” games, yet still focus primarily on improvement through tier one gaming experiences. An example he gives of a successful lifestyle game is Wii Fit, which is a game that consists of exercise activities. He also claims that games like these have been adopted in several physiotherapy rehabilitation centers (Brain Health and Online Gaming). Baxter is right on this claim. These lifestyle games, also known as fitness games, contain a variety of physical benefits, including rehabilitation, and thankfully, several console designers are attempting to embrace these positives. In 2006, Nintendo released the Wii console, which is the console Baxter’s example was played on. It saw large commercial success due to its ability to provide gamers with an entertaining and physically stimulating experience, selling over one-hundred million units worldwide. This console allowed players to exercise in a unique way that entertaining,
