Dorothy Day was an activist, suffragist, and icon to the Catholic Church during the beginning of the twentieth century. Her work in the organization, Catholic Worker Movement, was prominent to her work for the poor and vulnerable. Before the birth of her first child, Day struggled with her religion and finding her spirituality. After the gift of her child, she regained hope and love for religion and God by exploring and joining the Catholic Church. From here, her spirituality grew and love for social justice shaped her into the women she is known for today. Her love for the poor and spirituality is an example of how we should practice and apply our faith. Dorothy Day was born on November 8, 1897 to her mother, Grace, and father, John, in Brooklyn, New York. She especially did this through her group, the Catholic Worker Movement, by feeding and sheltering the poor, sick, and vulnerable. Day believed that Jesus came to give everyone life especially the poor. She strived for justice. She believed everyone deserves dignity and we can do it by feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and clothing the naked. She calls us to have dignity for the people we hold hatred against, by loving our enemies, and by treating each other justly. Her belief was to care for the poor, you had to confront the ones who cause their poverty like the government. She was so determined to help the poor that she even took the oath to poverty even though she was not a nun (Meehan. 171). She devoted her life to poverty by living in hospices, slums, and tenements throughout the country. She worked with and comforted the sick, addicted, and unemployed people living in these facilities. Almost immediately after her death in 1980 controversy arose about whether Dorothy Day should be canonized a Saint by the Church. Now that the Vatican has approved the late Cardinal John O'Connor's request to consider Dorothy Day's "cause," the controversy is being rekindled. After converting, she dedicated her life to New York's poor and immigrants, building hospitality homes that operated much like homeless shelters. Her endeavor grew into the national Catholic Worker movement, a social justice crusade conducted in revolutionary tones new to the church.
From reading the works of Day, I argue that people congregated to the Catholic Church seeking a community. Part I of Loaves and Fishes by Dorothy Day, starts with Day addressing that she is currently experiencing the third year of the depression. I believe that people living in America turned to Catholicism in time of the depression. The Catholic Church in America supported the working class, along with the poor. I feel that Catholicism saw a rise its numbers in America because of the support that the Catholic Church offered to those who were suffering during rough conditions. The Catholic Worker Movement worked on problems dealing with social justice. Day once said, “We believe that Christ went beyond natural ethics and the Old Dispensation in this matter of force and war and taught nonviolence as a way of life” (Celebrating).” From reading quotes from her like this one you understand that the reason she participated in civil disobedience was because of her religion. She went by what was right in God’s eyes not what was right legally, she explained this when she quoted St. Peter (Acts 5:29) “It is better to obey God than men”
November 20th, 1980 Dorothy passed away in the evening, after suffering from a failing hart. Dorothy left behind a great legacy. She touched the lives of so many, and will never be forgotten. In Dorothy’s last few years, she didn’t slow down. Dorothy suffered a long time from a bad hart in her elder years, but didn’t let that stop her. She was arrested again for protesting when she was in her late 70’s. Dorothy gave her final speech in August of 1976, just a few years before her passing. Throughout Dorothy’s life she loved to read the bible, Psalms, the Gospels, and the Sermon on the Mount, where what she lived her life for, and what she based her beliefs on. She lived her life like the Apostle Paul, and did so by always praying. Dorothy’s expressed a few times that her favorite bible chapter was Psalm. The bible verse known to be one of her favorites, “Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all my being, bless God's holy name" (Psalm 103:1.).
