Dot Foods’ formal origin can be traced to a small garage in rural Illinois in 1960. While the formal beginning may have started a garage, the idea that would become Dot Foods had been developing in Robert Tracy’s mind for several years (Tracy, 2016).
Robert Tracy joined the United States Marines in 1942 and served with distinction until the end of the war (Tracy, 2016). According to Tracy (2016), after the war, Robert enrolled at the University of Illinois. On his first day of class Robert met Dorothy Curtin, an education major from Blue Mounds, Illinois (Tracy, 2016). Tracy (2016) recounts that Robert and Dorothy would be inseparable through college and would marry after Dorothy graduated in 1949.

According to Tracy (2016), Associated Dairy Products expanded its product offering to include chocolate ingredient items and ice cream ingredient items. The company also expanded its customer reach beyond the five states surrounding Mount Sterling, Illinois to include customers in Arkansas, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee (Tracy, 2016). Tracy (2016) recounts that by 1969, Robert and Dorothy had twelve children many of whom were now starting to work in the family business. As a way to honor his wife’s contributions to the business, Robert Tracy renamed the company, Dot Foods in 1969 (Tracy, 2016).
According to Tracy (2016), Dot Foods continued to grow consistently but held fast to its fundamental customer value proposition. Dot Foods’ value proposition is still a result of item consolidation and frequent deliveries (Tracy, 2016). Today, Dot Foods distributes more than 100,000 items to food manufacturing and food distribution companies across the United States and Canada (Beckman, 2016).
