Introduction
The word leadership brings to mind a variety of thought processes. It evokes memories of some of the great leaders of the past. Sir Winston Churchill who led the British people admirably with great fortitude against the Nazi onslaught. George Washington who fought against the British colonial empire for independence of the Americans. Abraham Lincoln who fought for abolition of slavery and human bondage. Dr. Martin Luther King who fought for equal civil rights for his people. Nelson Mandela who fought courageously for abolition of Apartheid. Mahatma Gandhi who through his unconventional methods of peace, non- cooperation and non- violence forced the British to grant independence to India. All these men exemplified key leadership skills in performing their duties and at the same time achieved success in their endeavors.
Concept of Leadership According to Sharma & Jain (2013), “Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish the objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and purposeful” (Para 5, pp. 310).
Leadership is common in all living beings. In all spheres of life some form of leadership exists i.e. in politics, social groups and the corporate world. Leadership skills are influenced by values, beliefs, ethics and character (Para 6, Sharma & Jain, 2013). There is a difference between the functions of management and a leader. Leadership is that process in which one person sets the purpose or direction for one or more other persons and gets them to move along together with him or her and with each other in that direction with competence and full commitment (Elliott, 2009). Leadership is supposed to guide people to attain a particular set vision. Motivation is fundamental in the process of leadership as if there is no motivation there will be laxity among the people involved. It is also a critical scenario for leadership to have followers; this will infer a relationship between leaders and followers (Frank, 2003).

When talking about leadership, I would think of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his influences on the American civil rights movement. His famous speech – “I have a dream” is one of the most compelling in all times. The speech was powerful because it was simple and brought out a clear and focused theme. The audiences’ emotion was agitated instantly by his speech. And the reaction and impact were enormous. Of course, leadership is not only about powerful speeches, but involves the leaders’ characteristics and their abilities to influence others.
Some people grow up into leaders and some people are born as leaders. Those that are born as leaders are strong not only do that they have a vision they know how communicate that vision. To maintain strong leadership playing it safe when setting goals is not an option. Goals incur some risk, but hold the potential for big payoffs. The leader has to be trustworthy and honest, deceiving or manipulating creates destruction in ones plans. Strong leaders that are upfront, honest and direct take responsibility when things go wrong rather than shifting the blame to others. A Leadership requires high self-esteem and confidence, because leaders with strong self-esteem are not afraid to listen and make changes when change is needed.
When we say LEADERSHIP, a lot of factors are associated to it. It has a lot of dimensions and one cannot simply inherit it.We need to get exposed to a lot of dimensions in order to acquire those.
The authentic leadership approach developed by Bill George, focusses on the characteristics such as purpose, values, relationships, self-discipline, and heart (Northouse, 2016). In my opinion Martin Luther King, JR exhibited the traits of an authentic leader. King’s passion was to have equality among all people in the United States, giving him his purpose (Phillips, 2001). He had showed heart or compassion when he gave speeches or talked to others, always showing love to everyone, even those who had wronged him (Phillips, 2001). For example, when his house bombed, he stood up and spoke about peace, encouraging his followers not to fight back with violence (Phillips, 2001). He showed self-discipline or consistency, even when he was arrested for speaking out against the injustices that occurred, upon release he continued to speak out about the unfairness and poor treatment (Phillips, 2001). He built relationships with his followers and was connected with the current situations that they were experiencing. Leadership is the ability to prepare, coordinate, learn, and follow, a group in a quest to accomplish a specific task/mission, or a state of being over-all successful. Keeping the group’s motivation, dedication, esprit de corps, and over-all well being positive. Ensuring failures are considered learning points for improvement and successes are recognized. Furthermore the ability to foster these abilities in other members of your group as to take your place in the future should be equally as important as the primary result.
According to Ordway Tead as quoted from the book the psychology of Leadership essay Cheppy Day Cahyoo States that leadership is an activity affecting the people to cooperate in order to achieve the purpose for which they are intended. And in that same book Stogdill argued that leadership is a process or action affecting the activities of a group that organized efforts in goal setting and achievement of those goals.
Over the years, a great deal of time, and research has been dedicate to the study of leadership. Even with extensive data on the topic, many still disagree on what leadership really means. Hence, leadership is a word that has many different meanings and different researched theories associated with it. On a basic level, leadership involves having and establishing a clear vision, sharing that vision with followers, respecting followers, and leading an organization with excellence while ensuring that everyone is part of the team. Leadership is also a method by which a leader uses his or her influence towards getting a group of followers to take ownership or buy into a vision.
Leadership is an approach for a leader to guide, motivate, supervise, manage, and influence others in different situation to reach a goal. According to the Pettinger (2007), the leadership can be explained in several situations. First, the leaders have the responsible to provide vision and direction to the followers. Second, the leaders shall energise and motivate the followers. Third, the leaders shall set and enforce absolute standards of behaviour, attitude, presentation and performance.
In the textbook Leadership is defined as ‘the process of influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals’ (Hughes, Ginnet & Curphy 2015, p. 5). Leadership involves leader, followers, and situation.
Leadership, in its broadest sense, is the process using social influence to enlist the support of other people in completing a common task or achieving a collective goal. Common conceptions about organisational leadership focus on the image of charismatic individuals inspiring their subordinates with their own passion and zeal for a vision. This popular image is taken as the standard for effective leadership style and a measure of future organisational success.
