Dr. Phil McGraw Born Phillip Calvin McGraw, Dr. Phil was born in Vinita, OK on September 1, 1950. McGraw, growing up to be six feet four inches tall, was a star linebacker at Shawnee Mission North High School in which he attended. In 1968 Phil McGraw was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Tulsa. After attending Tulsa, he transferred to Midwestern State University in Texas graduating in 1975 with a Bachelor's degree in psychology. Furthering his education, McGraw went on to the University of North Texas earning his Master's degree in experimental psychology in 1976 followed by a PhD in clinical psychology in 1979. Phil while a successful man, has also experienced failure. Deciding to join the weightloss business in 2003, McGraw began selling “Shape it up woo,woo”, a weight loss plan that claimed to be made up of scientifically researched ingredients that change your behavior resulting in weight loss. Dr Phil promoted the diet system consisting of shakes, energy bars and supplements on the Dr. Phil Show. His sisters and nephew vouched as testimonials stating that they used the plan and it in fact worked. However, several sources began to accuse McGraw of lacking expertise to recommend weight loss products, sparking an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission “Facing a Federal Trade Commission investigation into Shape Up's claims, McGraw pulled his supplements off the market in March 2004, and the FTC dropped its probe. In October 2005, several people who used McGraw's products declared an intent to file a class action lawsuit against him, claiming that although the supplements cost $120 per month they did not stimulate weight loss. McGraw settled the suit in September 2006 for $10.5 million. Some of the settlement ($6 million) may be paid to the plaintiffs in the form of Amway (Quixtar) brand Nutrilite vitamins” (Phillip McGraw). Phil, along with his wife Robin, established a foundation known as the Dr. Phil Foundation. The foundation is designed to improve the lives of foster children and disadvantaged kids by supporting programs and organizations that offer solutions to the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual needs of children and families. The foundation has donated over $400,000 to disaster relief organizations such as the Katrina Fund, United Way and American Red Cross. It also supports arts and music programs for children and has funded over $750,000 to the Boys and Girls Club, Little Kids Rock and the Roots of Music. Additionally, the foundation is committed to children’s health and abuse prevention donating $800,000 to the Kidd’s Kids, Hope House and Toys for Tots
