Courage is an important quality to have, because everyone can’t always be afraid of everything and let their fears hold them back. Sometimes people have to do things that they don’t want to do, or they have to face their fears.

“Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is being afraid and doing it anyway.” This quote said by Lou Gehrig explains that courage isn't about having no fear; but rather, it is about one being filled with fear and deciding that something or someone is greater than that fear. In the book, The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, by Jamie Ford, the protagonist, Henry Lee, turns against the will of his father and his own country values to run after forbidden love. Even though Lee is afraid, he courageously proceeds to follow his heart.

Courage is as stated in The New International Webster’s Dictionary of the English Language to be “the capacity to meet danger or difficulty with firmness.” In my mind courage has always meant doing what you had to do, and dealing with it because you had to. My act of courage is when I found out that i had Reactive Attachment Disorder. You can get this from being abused when you were a little kid or a baby. Well in my case I was abused by my mom for two years. She abused me since the day I came home from the hospital till the I was almost three years old and got put into foster care so I got away from the person who was abusing me for a couple of month's. I just found out on January tenth, 2017 at a meeting that I had to go to that I had Reactive Attachment Disorder. Oxford defines courage as the ability to do something that frightens one. Courage isn’t necessarily being strong, or doing something that other don't want to do, it can be small acts, such as swimming in the ocean even though sharks are feared.
