Throughout the history of American Quarter horses the main issue of the industry is the extent amount of drug usage on horses. The use of drugs on horses can help for healing and speed up the time of injury recovering, yet most of the time drugs hurt the horses. Today, this abusive action has only increased since the founding of the association. Quarter horses are jeopardized by having drugs injected in them to gain endurance and speed, but people fail to mention the risks that can occur. Injecting horses with dangerous drugs can cause heart attacks that may cause death after their race.
Death is one major risks along with others that could happen to an at-risk horse being injected with drugs. In the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

They risk an animal’s life to win a race that could be won without doping the horses. The American Quarter Horse Association Handbook, the rules specifically says drugs are not tolerable, yet they only test the horse the day before not the day of the race. Stated in handbook, “AQHA rules pertaining to prohibition of drugs, surgical alteration or any inhumane treatment of the horse….thereby making the exhibitor, participant and/or the owner eligible for possible disciplinary action upon proof of the presence of such prohibited drug by laboratory analysis, existence of surgical alteration or any inhumane treatment of the horse.” (AQHA). The book strongly repeats itself about the horse’s safety; it lists many different drugs that could damage a race horse’s health. Even with all the rules and regulations about drugs that could kill a horse, owners do not listen. They inject the drugs knowing the different possibilities that could occur. In the article, “Prohibited Substances, Feed, and the Performance Horse,” it argued, “competition horses are expected to compete with no banned substances or controlled medication substances in their systems unless at a level defined and approved by Federation Equestre Internationale regulations.” (Huntington). Any herbal or natural product that is used on horse before a race could pump up a horse’s heart which could lead to the overpowerment of the drug. Relating to the
The United States has the world's highest incarceration rate. With five percent of the world's population, our country houses nearly twenty-five percent of the world's reported prisoners. Currently there are approximately two million people in American prisons or jails. Since 1984 the prison population for drug offenders has risen from ten percent to now over thirty percent of the total prison population. Federal prisons were estimated to hold 179,204 sentenced inmates in 2007; 95,446 for drug offenses. State prisons held a total of 1,296,700 inmates in 2005; 253,300 for drug offenses. Sixty percent of the drug offenders in prisons are nonviolent and were purely in prison because of drug offenses (Drug War Facts). The question then arises,
They are hurting the horse more than helping it in the long run. There are dozens of illegal drugs in the race horse industry. My main focus is five of them, Anabolic Steroids, Corticost Steroids, Milkshake, Lasiks and Aces(Gustafson, 2008). These drugs are used for many different things to build up muscle, take down swelling, to make a horse’s performance better, internal bleeding into the lungs, causing, what people call bleeders and to almost make then zone out, or not make them act all crazy. These drugs could be masking a very simple problem that could be fixed or making an even bigger problem
There tremboulus pressure to win in horse racing. Every rider and owner wants to go the Preakness, the Belmont Stakes, and the Kentucky Derby. They also want to the win the triple crown. These riders and owners turn to drugs to keep their horse competing at a high level. This is worse because horse are not make the decision to do drug. This is not baseball players
“Doping and the inappropriate use of normal medications present a serious threat to the integrity and reputation of our sport, because they give athletes an unfair advantage and threaten the welfare of horses.”(FEI’s Clean Sport Campaign pg1) Federation Equestre Inerationale and several other animal welfare organizations have well-established regulations trying to create a more perfect sport. Because riding in shows is so competitive riders need to understand that showing isn’t always about winning but learning for the experience of showing.
The recent down fall in the economy has made horse owners not want their horses anymore. The cost of maintaining a horse has greatly increased; horses are not able to survive on just the grass in a field. Horses need the vitamins from the grain and hay. Depending on what kind of horse you have, depends on the additional supplement they
All drugs have dangers due to certain chemicals and substances. Because of animal testing, researchers have found another alternative to testing on humans.
The textbook pointed out that drug prevention and drug ________ might have different goals and use different approaches.
There is a big question floating in the air around a lot of people today,
Prescription drug abuse has become an epidemic in the United States especially among the youth of our country. The Partnership for a Drug Free America says that 2,500 teens a day abuse prescription drugs. Abuse of these narcotics can lead to serious mental and physical consequences. Why is this such a problem, what can we do to solve it, and how is it affecting our social lives?
However, concern lies with the performance enhancing and masking abilities in competition. Horses treated with the drug have been reported to run faster, earn more money and are more likely to finish first, second or third than horses not receiving it
Thoroughbred horse racing is a sport full of beauty, thrill, and danger. Each horse is different, they are built different, they have different attitudes and they have different trainers. The sport of horse racing is where you see the unbridled speed and agility of the thoroughbreds. Well actually, today’s horse racing is where you get to see the work of the medications that have been injected inside the horses. The medications that are inserted into these horses can make them run faster, they are pain relievers, and they have many other effects for the good and the bad inside the horses. To get the pure natural horse racing back, we need to take a step in preventing the use of race day drugs.
“A horse doesn’t care how much you know, until he knows how much you care.”, said Pat Parelli. “You took care of your horse, so your horse took care of you.”, Said Elton Gallegly. I feel horse care is very important to sustain a happy, and healthy horse. If not cared for correctly, they may become very sick. Anthrax, West Nile Virus, Rabies, or Lyme Disease, are only some of the diseases that can occur. If not cared for, they may affect you as well as your daily life. Anthrax is caused by bacteria in the food, water, or soil, that the horse is around. This disease may cause death to your horse. This is why it is very important to change your horses food and water daily, as well as mucking out the stall, if you have one. West Nile Virus is caused by a mosquito bite, or by a bird. This may cause weakness, trouble in walking, muscle spasms, or death. Rabies is caused by a bite from an infected animal, or contact with infected saliva, from something that was already infected. Rabies may cause depression, agitation, aggressiveness, and your horse may slowly develop paralysis, or death. Lyme Disease is caused by ticks, and can cause arthritis, lameness, neurologic disease, eye disease, dermatitis, or death. To prevent these diseases from happening, you must
“Statistics over many years have shown that jumps races are even more dangerous and harmful for horses, with up to 20 times more fatalities than flat races” (Horse Racing, 2017). Jump racing is also a lot more demanding then flat races as they are longer, they also jump and run approximately the same speed as flat races and the jockeys are required to be heavier. Many people have even bigger issues with the training and well-being of these horses. If normal race horses have bleeding in the lungs, stuck in stalls for large periods of time, being over-worked and given unnatural foods to improve their performance, it must be the same or even worse for jump racing horses. Just recently at the Oakbank Easter Races another horse was put down during the Somerled Hurdle race, almost the length of three kilometers with hurdles throughout. At the last hurdle, the five-year-old gelding Wheeler Fortune suffered a horrendous leg injury and was euthanized. This is the 17th horse to die just in SA alone since 2009, and 79 horses in Australia since 2006 from this cruel sport. Mr. Bignell, the local racing minister has said “it’s cruel it’s barbaric and doesn’t belong in the 21st Century” after the events at Oakbank. He wants TSA to act on and ban the
Many equestrians know that the horseshow world is a community where people tend to fall into the temptations of drugging the horses. The performance horse world as a community is run by money and fame that people often use as an excuse to hide what is really going on in the equine industry. Drugging horses for enhanced performance is unethical and degrades the equestrian sport and fairness of competitions. The following research looks at the bylaws, regulations, and consequences of the use of drugs and medications in performance horses in the sport horse industry. Being the winner has taken
A person’s body, in almost every aspect of its being, is addicted when one is a mild to chronic user and abuser. The nervous system, brain, and muscle tissue are all living in anticipation of the next high. So, for the addict, it is crucial that the cycle of behavior, is broken. The addict needs to pull up the anchor that keeps them from moving forward. This means changing environments, patterns and even sometimes friends and social associates.
