CHAPTER 17: SUBSTANCE-ABUSE TREATMENT: STRATEGIES FOR
Drug abuse has changed over the years due to the trends that Americans face from the encouragement of different cultures. The abuse of substances creates many health problems. The following will discuss the past and current trends of drug use and the effects these drugs have on the health of the individuals who abuse the drugs.
Almost half of the drug abusers also suffered from alcohol abuse at some point during their lifetime.” People don’t only use drugs get high or deal with the stresses of life, but also to deal with the problems with in them. People use drugs to cope with their anxieties, depression and schizophrenia. With the drugs the people feel that the disorder they have does not exist. They believe that they are everyone else and there is nothing wrong with them. “Initial low-level involvement with drugs may result from peer pressure, drug availability or other risk factors in an individual's social or family environment.” Many individuals use drugs to fit in with friends or to be excepted by a crowd of higher popularity than them. This happens a lot in high school with younger students being pressured by upper classmen.
Drug culture in the United States is constantly portrayed in the media and various entertainment outlets. The heavy presence of drug use in mainstream music, television, and news, is often glorified or excessively denounced, causing many to hold misconceptions about the factual consequences illegal drugs have on the human body. The United States Drug Enforcement Agency has categorized illegal drugs into five groups: narcotics, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, and drugs of concern.
Likewise, studies should also examine if functions can be categorized into primary and secondary reasons and how these relate to changes in patterns of use and drug dependence. The recognition of the functions fulfilled by substance use could help inform education and anticipation strategies and make them related and acceptable to the target audiences. Also, the threat to public health and safety comes from the escalating misuse, abuse and deviation of prescription drugs. People mistakenly believe that because prescription drugs are legal or are prescribed by a doctor, they are safer than illicit drugs. The study clearly shows, however, that when prescription medications are used in ways other than they are prescribed, they can be very harmful and sometimes addictive. See below to learn more about this growing problem. Prescription drugs are not inherently bad. When used appropriately, prescription drugs are safe and vitally needed by millions of Americans suffering from pain, disease and mental illness. This article study was supported by a grant provided by National Institute on Drug Abuse, the conclusion provides evidence motivation to misuse prescription is an imperative factor of issues related to drug problems of
The Office of National Drug Control Policy calls prescription drug abuse “the Nation’s fastest growing drug problem.” The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has classified prescription drug abuse as a growing national epidemic. Prescription drug abuse is the Nation’s fastest-growing drug problem. While there has been a marked decrease in the use of some illegal drugs like cocaine, data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) show that nearly one-third of people aged 12 and over used drugs for the first time began by using a prescription drug non-medically. (1)
Research done by Bilchek and Crowe (1998) concludes that there are a host of problems that can arise when using prescription and illegal drugs. The most common problems that can arise have to do with academics, physical and mental health and delinquency (Bilchek and Crowe 1998). When students begin experimenting with illegal and prescription drugs, it can cause a destructive ripple effect in their lives. Beginning with academics, students that abuse illegal drugs may begin to have declining grades, a lack of motivation, and skip class more often. When students are concentrated on getting the next high, they will lose the motivation to study and keep up their grades. It could even escalate as far as skipping class or dropping out. This leads to poor performance and a downward spiral effect. If an individual becomes more concerned with the next high or rush he or she gets than their education, they will be unfortunately more likely to drop out. As a result of dropping out, the only option as a source of income is to find a low paying job to pay for the addiction that will inevitably form and be difficult to overcome. Not only will substance abuse have an effect on one’s academic career, but their physical and mental state as well. When an individual is under the influence, their ability to make suitable choices is considerably hindered. This can lead to injuries from
The cost of alcohol and substance abuse in the United States reaches heights of four hundred eighty four billion dollars per year (“Drug Abuse is Costly, n.d.”). That’s about seven hundred eighty times the amount it cost to diagnose and treat sexually transmitted diseases in the year 2000 (Chesson, 2000). The social issue I will be analyzing in this writing is substance abuse. Much of my childhood and adolescence was spent dealing with the consequences of substance abuse of many of my family members. I would not only like to help bring more awareness to this issue, but also help in some way to end the stigma associated with substance abuse, because it is a mental illness all on its own. And these individuals do need proper intervention and care.
In the present times, drug abuse is a major cause for concern and has an adverse effect on society in general. Although students comprise of a large section of drug abusers, grown-ups also capitulate to drug abuse. In fact among the middle-aged people there is an inclination to abuse prescription drugs.
The use of drugs is a controversial topic in society today. In general, addicts show a direct link between taking drugs and suffering from their effects. People abuse drugs for a wide variety of reasons. In most cases, the use of drugs will serve a type of purpose or will give some kind of reward. These reasons for use will differ with different kinds of drugs. Various reasons for using the substance can be pain relief, depression, anxiety and weariness, acceptance into a peer group, religion, and much more. Although reasons for using may vary for each individual, it is known by all that consequences of the abuse do exist. It is only further down the line when the effects of using can be seen.
In the United States of America, we, the people value several things, some of which
Over the last couple of years, there has been increased concern over the effects of drugs on the health of Americans. This is mainly due to the increased use of drugs by most citizens, which has caused the government to spend a lot of money to curb this problem. One of the most abused drugs is alcohol, and American citizens are increasingly becoming addicted to it. It is also the most undesirable drug, as it costs the government over $200 billion in terms of productivity, health and crime-related costs (Office of National Drug Control Policy 2).
There are many things that can lead up to deviant behavior or activities. One may say that drug abuse can hinder towards deviant activities. According to NCADD,” drugs are implicated in an estimated 80% of offenses leading to incarceration in the United States” (Wilcox, 2017). This statics is high number that shows our nation that drugs are huge influence on crime in today’s society.
Persons who suffer from untreated and/or undiagnosed mental illness are prone to turn to substance abuse in their attempts to self-medicate. Due to the mood-altering effects of substances, those who may experience anxiety, depression, and psychotic symptoms, tend to find temporary relief from such symptoms in their drug usage, however the adverse effects
It has been discovered that most people who struggle with drug addiction began experimenting with drugs in their teens. Teenage drug abuse is one of the largest problems in society today and the problem grows and larger every year. Drugs are a pervasive force in our culture today. To expect kids not to be influenced by the culture of their time is as unrealistic as believing in the tooth fairy (Bauman 140). Teens may feel pressured by their friends to try drugs, they may have easy access to drugs, they may use drugs to rebel against their family or society, or they may take an illegal drug because they are curious about it or the pleasure that it gives them.
Many past and current trends of the use and abuse of drugs in the United States have been associated with health and social trends that at times may have been considered culturally acceptable. Many trends have occurred since early times. The nineteenth century introduced advancement in modern medicines making several medicinal drugs popular, but by the end of the century was being considered a complicated matter. The twentieth century showed great concern amongst the American people for substance abuse and trends of usage and abuse changed as quickly as the decades past by. The drug usage and abuse now is very regulated and campaigned against misuse of licit drugs and the abuse of illicit drugs.
