Dweck writes about how the way in which we (we being parents and teachers) praise our children and students can affect their future career prospects. She says that, for example, if we were to praise and reward a student (or child) for getting a high score on a test by telling them that they must be very smart, this would, in fact, be detrimental to their work ethic for if they encountered a situation in which they did not understand the material at hand, they would give up on the basis of not being smart enough. However, the author continues, if we were to praise and reward them by telling them that they must have worked hard, then if they were to encounter a problem that posed challenging, they would simply worked harder to overcome the problem
Rita Pierson has discovered a way to incorporate positive reinforcement without setting her students up to fail. During her speech, she offers personal experience to help support her theory that acknowledging the correct answers over incorrect answer can lead to confidence building in a pupil’s self-esteem and creating a trustful human connection with the student. Rita offers a comfortable and wisdom providing argument wrapped in a presentation that shows passion for how teachers and student relationship should be. Her over all demeanor has the audience listening, learning and engaging as she shares her beliefs with a passionate smile on her face. To top off the speech she adds some comedic relief that encourages the connections with her listeners. The room was set in a lecture classroom like setting with Rita being highlighted. Everyone looking down at Rita as she presents her argument about human connections and positive criticism in today’s classrooms.
Many people have different ways to accomplish their goals which depends on their experiences and struggles in life. They can use these experiences and struggles and turn them into wisdom, and they become determined to accomplish these goals no matter what obstacles stand in their way. For example, Ernesto was determined to learn how to be an American, but to never forget that he was truly a Mexican. The “Apollo 13” crew was determined to fix a problem in their spaceship by using their knowledge. In both situations, confidence and determination was needed to face challenges, but with teamwork, they acheived success on these missions.
She asks the question what can we do to help children. She suggests why don’t we process praise in other words “intelligence praise”. This creates kids that a hardy and resilient. This creates more effort strategy and perseverance. She wants to change student’s mindsets. Also wants people to push out of their comfort zones because that will make them smarter. This will help a lot with struggling students according to her.
Bruni quotes the President of the National Center on Education, Marc Tucker, “ Our students have an inflated sense of their academic prowess. They don’t expect to spend much time studying, but they confidently expect good grades and marketable degrees”(par.25). From a young age we need to teach these children you succeed from hard work. Many parents have been exempting their children from test and are expecting them to learn? In order for kids to be able to learn what they need to, parents need to allow them to deal with the difficult times.
It has been proven that students who do not like challenges give up and do not succeed because many feel like they just aren’t smart enough but that’s not the case. The article states that students are not born “being smart” they have to be told “good job” so that they build their growth mindset and work for their
“One of the most neglected virtues of our daily existence is appreciation. Somehow, we neglect to praise our son or daughter when he or she brings home a good report card, and we fail to encourage our children when they first succeed in baking a cake or building a birdhouse. Nothing pleases children more than this kind of parental interest and approval (27).”
“Everyone knows some young person who is impressively “street smart” but does poorly in school. What a waste, we think, that one who is so intelligent about so many things in life seems unable to apply that intelligence to academic work.”
However, “When success Leads to Failure” focuses heavily on letting kids fail and learn through trial and error. Jessica Lahey states it is better if kids keep the excitement and curiosity alive in academic expenditures; Spirit of inquiry keeps kids eager for knowledge. “The truth—for this parent and so many others—is this: Her child has sacrificed her natural curiosity and love of learning at the altar of achievement… ”(Lahey) From a different vantage point, Dweck states the solution lies with the adults. “Parents and teachers can engender a growth mind-set in children by praising them for their persistence or strategies (rather than for their intelligence)... ” Through proper praise and encouragement from adults, kids will continue to achieve their potential. Proper praise being, praising them for effort instead of
A child who has been praised in the younger years of his or her schooling is more likely to have a fixed mind-set. As said in lines 45-46, “Attributing poor performance to a lack of ability depresses motivation more than does the belief that lack of effort is to blame.” With this fixed
The goal of most parents is to raise children to be independent, successful and to create adults that one day becomes good parents. Accordingly, a question of when and how to praise children in order to promote positive development has become the center of attention for parents and educators and has been proven helpful to the children. In today’s society, a number of children are left behind academically and experience lowered self-esteem. Therefore, praise is needed more than ever to encourage happy and healthy development. The approach presented by Carol Dweck is the one I agree with, her testing the fifth graders. Dweck proved that while praising a child for his or her intelligence may be causing more harm than good and
On the other hand, struggling with maintaining work ethic may make it much harder to complete certain tasks. With little to no motivation, working hard and efficiently may not always be done easily. With that information, though, there is always a way to improve the ability to work hard. Doing work is a major aspect of anyone’s life, because to maintain a home and food, just about everyone is going to need a job, and before getting that job, good grades are an important part. Work ethic is a critical key to being successful in life, and it can always be improved on, no matter how good one person’s work ethic can be. There is always a way to be more efficient, work harder, and figure out new ways to do a better job. Of course, naturally, some can be better at working than others, but practice will always improve any ability or skill if the work is put in, and goals are set. Hard work is something that all employers want to see, which a very important reason to do this is, and there are zero negative effects of doing better work, it is that
EDUCATION : “When an obstacle is tough, you try harder. When an obstacle is insurmountable, you change course.”
I personally do not like that word. It ignores all my efforts behind to achieve the goal. In fact, I worked extraordinarily hard to achieve my goal. While others were drinking and sleeping, I read one more page, and I even slept less than six hours per day every single day. I really love sleeping like any other people do, but I was compelled to reduce my sleeping hour to do everything that I wanted to do. Twenty-four hour was still not enough for me. How can they justify their lack of passion by distinguishing me as a smart guy? We were born with the same capacity, but the difference is that I put more efforts than they did. They could have the same result if they tried as hard as I did. Actually, I feel like I was not totally hard-working; I could have used my time more efficiently by reducing time on watching porns or playing mobile games. What a wasteful
Dweck’s finding surprised me. What surprised me is that alternatively I myself have always learned or heard that intelligence or IQ is something we're born with with some environmental factors having some effect on it. Moreover, it’s good to know that some one else has a different viewpoint on that it is very possible for one's abilities to go beyond. Indeed, the whole concept of hard work or effort is something very important to point out. when it comes down to intelligence because one can have a high IQ, but without any hard work or effort one can't really accomplish anything. Above all, Intelligence can be a factor of many things but one thing for sure is that hard work or effort is a necessary quality to add.
When my students have performed well on assessments, like the AP test, I usually say “Thank you,” but I feel uncomfortable with the praise, even when it comes from my students. The way I see it, I helped prepare the students or players for the task - a test or a game - but they are the ones who had to perform, they had to take the lessons and make them into a reality, not me. When it came to the test, I was merely a voice in their head (if that) and when it came to games, I was on the sideline. In both instances, I was not the one performing, so I don’t feel like I deserve the praise. Although some may say it’s false modesty, it’s not because I didn’t get into either profession to get accolades, I did it because I want to help others reach their dreams, which is the only praise I need.
