Dyslexia In Middle Childhood Education

In class we discussed the common health problems that children in middle childhood, ages 7-11, can experience. One we discussed was learning disability. The main one mentioned, Dyslexia. Dyslexia is a disorder where someone struggles learning to read and interpret language, letters, and words. I was really interested in this, even though we only went over it briefly in class, because I am dyslexic, and although I don’t notice it all the time, there are instances when it has been a problem in my life. In the beginning of elementary school, I was a pretty average student when it came to reading and writing, I had some help in reading in the beginning, but they told my parents that some just develop a little slower, and that I could catch up to peers with …show more content…

They tried everything from reading slowly out loud, so that I could hear myself, sounding out each word, they put colored translucent paper over the black and white text, to make the contrast different so my eyes could focus a little easier. I put up a fight, and didn’t make it easy on parents, because what kid wants to go to “school” on the weekend, but in the long run I feel that it didn’t “fix” it, but it gave me ways to deal with it. I would get so frustrated at my brain for “not working”, but I can remember this one day I went to work with my mom, and we were playing Hangman together and in the phrase, there was one word that I could not, for the life of me spell. The word was if. I sat there for so long, asking my mom to spell it, and her answer, was for me to take my time and just spell it out. I just remember getting so frustrated because I just couldn’t do it! I was spelling it IV, and IK, and IH, and I knew it was wrong, but I could not think of
