Population
The population for this evidence based project are African Americans diagnosed with prediabetes at a local primary care facility in Tallahassee, Florida. The intended age group is for this evidence based practice change project are patients from the ages of 18- 60 years of age. Participants must be English speaking African American males or females between the ages of 18-60 years of age old and clinically diagnosed with pre-diabetes with an a1c of 5.7 % to 6.4%.
Intervention
The planned intervention for this scholarly EBP change project was to implement a culturally sensitive diabetes education program. However, the participants in this EBP change project will be given a pre-and posttest to evaluate the efficacy of a culturally sensitive education program regarding increasing healthy lifestyle behaviors regarding nutrition, exercise, and knowledge regarding Type 2 Diabetes.
Outcome
The intended outcome of the EBP practice change project is that participants will exhibit an increase in diabetes knowledge at the end of the 6-week course. An increase in diabetes knowledge would be confirmed by participants exhibiting higher posttest intervention assessment scores.
Summary
In the US type 2 diabetes is a major medical problem affecting all ethnic backgrounds and needs to be addressed. The pre-diabetic and diabetic population is steadily increasing every year despite medical advancements. Unfortunately, the African American population is at a disadvantage when it comes to diabetes. Preventing medical complications related to diabetes, initiating health promotion programs, increasing healthy lifestyle behaviors will essentially lead to a decrease risk of complications secondary to diabetes and overall improve patient
