To start my plan for implementation, I will first talk to my director of nursing, manager, and nurse educator for approval. I plan to implement increase evidence based practice use in my department (cardiac unit). I will obtain information from our quality assurance nurse to evaluate how our core measures like AMI, chf, and stroke bundle is being consistently followed by the nurses in my department. I plan to empower staff nurses to use EBP. I will schedule workshops for nurses interested in learning more about research and EBP, increase access to library resources and EBP information, interactive EBP skills and rounds, development of EBP mentors and champions. The change should be an ongoing support from the leaders and organization to
“Back to Basics: Implementing Evidence-Based Practice” written by Lisa Spruce is an article that touched on the importance of implementing EBP to engage patients better in their care. Spruce discusses how to implement EBP in a perioperative nurse setting can improve patient outcomes and save money. She goes on to describe the steps to take to implement this strategy and describes how the implementation of EBP positively impacts the entire facility. Physicians and other medical professionals, such as nurses, have the obligation to inform patients about the best options for their care. After all, the goal of seeking medical care is a positive outcome; EBP requires highlights this.
further diabetes education. The EBP change project was able to increase diabetes knowledge among African Americans with prediabetes by discussing risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes, proper nutrition and promoting health promotion behaviors. Currently, there is no diabetes education program or policy that’s in place targeting patients with prediabetes at the EBP change project site. Therefore, it is the project manager goal that the EBP change project site will begin to implement a diabetes education program focusing on the prediabetic patient population.
“Evidence-based practice (EBP) is using the best available research findings to make clinical decisions that are most effective and beneficial for patients” (Chitty & Black, 2007, p. 275). As a professional, evidence based practice incorporates critical thinking and improving your clinical judgement. In order to stay up to date with evidence based practice the nurse can attend continued education, professional conferences, read journals, and become a member of a professional organization (Chitty & Black, 2007, p. 276). The AANP
Nurses are cheered to integrate and apply EBP as part of their daily practice. EBP is “knowing that what we do is the best practice” (AMSN, 2014). EBP is very important in health care system and can dramatically change quality care and clinical outcomes. According from the Iowa/Titler Model from AMSN (2014), the EBP process have five steps:
Internal method is used to identify best practices within an organization, to compare best practices within the organization, and to compare current practice over time. In my EBP project, I would like to discuss internally with my coworkers, my mentor, patients and family members to get more information to solve issues regarding fall prevention because Communication and sharing information with participants always for specifying the purpose and strategy of the quality improvement. Developing open channels of communication across all corrections and at all levels of leadership, permits the voicing of concerns and observations the process of creating any change. External method I would like to use my EBP that is a Center for Transforming Healthcare
As the demand for making changes and facilitating EBP increase, more models are developed to attain better EBP adoption, such as the ACE Star Model of Knowledge Transformation and the Iowa model of EBP (Schmidt & Brown, 2015, p. 47 - 49). As advance to the regional level of collaboration, nurses from different organizations, hospitals, or clinics obtain resources with assistance via local librarians (Schmidt & Brown, 2015, p. 50). As Shirey (2006) mentioned in her article, there are four important regional resource centers of excellence provide and integrate multiple resources to organizations, which facilitate innovation of EBP remarkably. In order to spread and implement the new change throughout the country, the national level of collaboration is employed to promote nursing research and EBP. Several national associations establish and update their EBP guidelines on an annual basis, therefore, nurses and organizations who are interested in research and EBP for providing a higher quality of healthcare to patient have references to look up and follow (Schmidt & Brown, 2015, p. 53). Finally, EBP changes made by the nurses from different countries is called the
Using evidenced based practice in nursing care has been found to improve nursing care and patient outcomes for that matter. Though nurses are gradually embracing the use of evidenced based practice, we still have more to do to achieve EBP across the board. Studies have shown increase in responsiveness and attitude to EBP but are still faced by significant barriers in employing it. Therefore what we think and believe is not what is practiced (Stevens, 2013).
The John Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Model is a powerful problem-solving approach to clinical decision making and is used in research. The model is designed to meet the needs of the practicing bedside nurses and used a three step process called a PET, facilitating nurses in translating evidence to clinical, administrative and education based on evidence. According to Melnyk and Overholt (2015), there are three steps to the JHNEBP model. The first phrase is practice questions: Identification of an EBP question and defines its scope. The second phrase is evidence of internal and external evidence team determine if its feasibility to implement. The final phase is a translation which includes recommended practice for changes and dissemination of findings.
In assessing this organization, it is apparent that there are few facilitators to the implementation of EBP. The organization clearly states the intention to follow evidence-based practice in its mission
The barriers to the implementation of the evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing could occur either at the individual level or the organizational level. The individual level barriers include a lack of time and skill to work with the computer, age, level of education and the professional experience of the employees. (Khammarnia, Haj Mohammadi, Amani, Rezaeian, & Setoodehzadeh). Some people do not believe in this new approach, and they have a negative attitude towards research and EBP. It is hard for them to accept that the outcomes of EBP are better compared to the traditional methods. So they will continue to exert their pressure to follow the old practice. People think, it may take a lot of time to access the critical information from the
The introduction of EBP onto healthcare improvement scene constituted a major paradigm shift. This shift was apparent in the ways nurses began to think about research results, the way nurses framed the context for improvement and the way nurses employed change to transform.
Evidence-Base practice (EBP) is defined as based on problems identified from nursing practice; using best evidence and professional expertise and merging them into current practice to ensure patients receive quality care (French, 1999). Evidence-based practice is a part of quality improvement process; it is made of evidence, clinical expertise, patient preference and the context of care (Barker, 2013). In brief, evidence-based practice is the guideline in the nursing practice that requires nurses gather and use clinical evidence to help diagnose or assess patients correctly by using their knowledge and experience in order they can deliver the quality of care to the patients (Ellis, 2013). In the other words, in the nursing practice the clinical evidence supports all the nursing procedures performed.
Evidence - Based Nursing, An introduction (2008, p. 285 ) “ The rapidity of change and the reorganization of nursing services within the health care sector presents challenges for the advancement of EBP. Managers and administrators should facilitate the uptake of practice based on current, high-quality research by formalizing the expectation that nurses care be Evidence Based”.
Simply, benefits of applying EBP in patient care would be the desired outcome for the patients. According to Haas (2008), in fact, patient care designed based on the latest evidence data have 28% better outcome. Nursing research has been improved in quality, and there is growing awareness that research provides professional nursing
Discuss an action, supported by EBP/nursing principles, which you will use to manage the insight gained from this interaction. You are to apply the evidence located from at least one scholarly article to support your rationale for choosing this intervention. You are to discuss the barriers or promoters may you encounter as a health care provider in the implementation of this action? Possible considerations include: setting, specialty, client characteristics and resource utilization. Be specific about who will carry out the intervention and what the potential costs might be. Please cite the article within your discussion and give the APA reference at the bottom of your reflection journal page. (7 points) Total Points Earned__________ / 10 Total Points Possible
