Colorado Christian University has been a building stone in my educational and spiritual growth. The course Interpreting the Bible (BIB 230) is no exception to this concept in furthering my knowledge. It challenged me to think critically about the passages I am reading and to look at each word that the author uses. Learning to interpret the Bible takes a lot of research and many hours of reading the scriptures to comprehend how God is speaking through each author, which this course strengthened those habits for me.
There were many concepts that I learned during this course and there are a few of them that I have integrated into my study habits each time I read a passage. The first one is authorial intent, and according to Duvall & Hays (2012), it is when the author stresses the determination of the meaning of the text (p. 193). This concept consists of the reader researching to find out exactly what the author is saying and to make sure they remove their own interpretation so that the author’s meaning is only comprehended. When an author speaks, they are attempting to communicate the meaning using specific words and phrases in the writing, so we must refrain from adding our own interpretation to the meaning. This compels me to forget what I have learned in the past and read with a fresh open mind which then helps me renew my knowledge about the scriptures. This goes hand in hand with finding out the literary meaning the author is conveying.
“Literary meaning refers to the
The education of children has existed since the beginning of time as parents have taught and molded their children into the young adults they desired them to be. Initial training of children was not in a formal setting, although history would see numerous settings, purposes, and methodological changes. Philosophies of education have also changed through the years as various voices have seemed to grasp the purpose of educating the next generation, thus laying out objectives to reach those goals of teaching children.
1) Grasp the text in their town. (Read the text carefully and observe. Try to see as much as possible in the text. Look, look, and look again, observing all that you can. Scrutinize the grammar and analyze all significant words. Study the historical and literary contexts. Write out what the passage meant for the biblical audience using past tense verbs and refer to the biblical audience.)p.42

Under resources, Green states that theological disciplines must be put back together. This would include seminary curricula and the “practices of Christian formation such as corporate worship, instruction, prayer and hospitality” (63). To help with the task of putting these disciplines back together Green points to some needed resources (65). First, reading Scripture must be ecclesially located. “For those seriously interested, an important practice is to cultivate interpreting Scripture with others who share the posture of standing under” (66). Standing under implies that the bible based material need their origin and structuring inside the community of God’s people (66). Second, reading Scripture must be theologically shaped in making sure that the old Testament and New Testament interpretation is incomprehensible without each other (79). Thirdly, reading Scripture must be seriously involved in discerning the varieties of possible readings of other biblical texts (89). Lastly, reading Scripture must be Spirit filled. “To invite the Holy Spirit into the interpretive process is to deny our autonomy as readers of
I spent a year of college trying to be African. Afrobeats vibrated through the walls of Beets-Veenstra’s first floor dorm. My Christian college had an open-door policy. Walking past the ninth door on the left gave visitors an eyeful of my black hips swaying in circles as if an invisible hula-hoop entangled my waist. I had to get the moves I learned at the parties right. The beats were different from the hip hop music I regularly danced to. They were smooth tempos, but faster than reggae and bodies rocked with more control. My roommate complained about the hours I spent dancing in front of the mirror. We were not flat mates the next the year.
Broadly speaking, a liberal arts education is concerned with the pursuit of knowledge as an end in itself, rather than for the sake of acquiring skills targeted at a career. The liberal arts philosophy is traced to the Greek philosopher Socrates, who famously proclaimed that the “unexamined life is not worth living”. To that end, traditional liberal arts education emphasizes the scholarly, the gentlemanly and the liberating. However, contemporary liberal arts education is marked by the integration of liberal and practical education. Consequently, a Christian liberal arts education should provide knowledge and intellectual skills to help students become functional and capable of
I have had several people approach me and ask if our church sermons are “deep,” “have meat” or are “baby food.” What is interesting is the difficulties of serving up “meat” from a stage. It is sort of like running in a cow pasture hoping to get a steak. You are in the wrong place. However, Duvall and Hays do an excellent job in communicating the necessity of exegetical study for anyone who wants to get every bit of meaning out of scripture. They liken it to getting a love letter from someone and how one would read it over and over carefully studying the nuances of every word. Well, I believe that God’s word is his love letter to the world; and it is worth the work, effort and time to understand it all. Therefore, making careful observations
Although this is my second semester at Liberty University I have already completed the APOL and BIBL course which are required for my degree. As this would conclude the required Bible courses, I just hope to gain knowledge of a different aspect of the Bible. From my experience from the classes I have taken with Liberty University this far I realize that knowledge of the Bible is expected and I hope this course sets me up with more tools to complete various assignments. Through my prior courses this past summer I gained a refresher on things which I learned throughout high school and this course is something that I have actually never taken before. With it being new I just hope it brings insight into topics that are current and hopefully I
I am writing this essay concerning myself and my experience that will take place with Colorado Christian University. I believe CCU will be a very good place to start and pursue my education. Just to know that its a Faith Based Organization and College is good enough for me. This will help enhance my knowledge in what I already know to help me become A better Pastor and In the Educational Field. Just to let you know a little bit about myself I am the Senior Pastor and Founder Of The Worship
Colorado Christian University Essay Kim Slickmeyer A pivotal experience that I had in my walk with Jesus occurred during “The Walk to Emmaus” in September 2012. I attended the weekend retreat at Livingston First Church in Livingston, Tennessee during the women’s Walk #82 and was assigned the table of Ruth. The fellowship and spiritual experience was beyond what I had expected. The Lord revealed to me during that weekend that He was calling me to teach His Word to women. During the next few months I began leading and attending various Bible studies. I was amazed how much I was learning and the wisdom that God was revealing to me. As with everything in life, there were many who wanted to keep me down knowing I was excited and determined. Some
If you carefully consider the surrounding context of a passage, but ignore its literary genre, it could result in significant consequences, such as, committing damage to the original meaning of the text. It is important to take the text into consideration because it gives relevance to the meaning. Duvall and Hays explains in their book how “the Bible is everything”. Therefore, without understanding the context, there is no meaning because each story/literature in the Bible has its own specific rules that we all need to understand. Without understanding the exact meanings, we risk misinterpreting the word and spreading false scripture.
The retreats have affected my faith life in many positive ways. Freshman retreat helped me grow my faith and helped me to see God in all things. Since it was my first retreat it was very impactful. Specifically when people went up to say where they found God in a hard time, that helped me also see God in my tough times. Also the activities there helped me see Prep's community. The sophomore day retreat helped me see the connection between faith and service, and helped me further understand the importance of giving. The sophomore overnight also had a huge faith impact. It helped me to see that others had some of the same questions about the faith and how they figured it out and
Knowing these three positions are important to understanding how different people go about their studying of the Bible. There shouldn't be a right or wrong way how you study the Bible as long as you take the message of God into your lives. “Any interpretation of the Bible that hinders the Holy Spirit's witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ or that diverts our full attention from discipleship
Winsomely presented, B.B. Warfield is well known for his scholarship with no exception seen here, In The Religious Life of Theological Students. Here as seminary students, we must chiefly be Godly men, apt to teach with the added passion of devotion driven by our love of God. As a result of our love for God, we are encouraged to have in our vocation a devotion with zeal and piety. We are to be as Warfield puts it; God-made, meaning a minister is called, shaped and developed divinely by God’s decree and power thereby being made worthy through the process of God’s call upon their life.
