Learning should not be out of anyone’s reach. A college education should be provided for every child who wants it and this should be provided free of charge. It is morally wrong for students and their families to be forced to incur thousands of dollars of debt for an education. Right now college loan defaults are at the highest levels they have ever been. There is an entire generation that is starting out in life after college burdened with a very large amount of debt and a very small job market available after graduation. In President Obama’s 2015 State of the Union speech, he stated, “I want to spread that idea all across America, so that two years of college becomes as free and universal in America as high school is today. And I want to …show more content…
With more than thirty two percent of students not going to college after high school, community colleges can provide these students the opportunity to achieve a higher education for free(Bureau of Labor Statistics). Providing a free two year community college for everyone will increase the number of students enrolled in a post secondary education, produce a more productive and educated labor force, and eliminate the debts and loans students have to incur during college.
Community colleges serve close to forty percent of the undergraduate students in the United States; in 2013, 6.5 million students were registered at a community college in the United States (AACC). Community colleges are pillars of science, engineering, technology, and mathematics education. Community colleges prepare technicians for occupations in leading edge industries and grant associate 's degrees that allows students to finish their last half of their higher education at a four-year institution. Community colleges are the path to postsecondary education for many low income, racial minority and first generation college students. With community college being a central opportunity for students to achieve a further education, it would be beneficial to make education at community colleges free. The comprehensive mission of community college makes them
In the article “Two Years Are Better Than Four” author Liz Addison writes about how community college is a forgotten option for many students in America, and that it is not well advertised like the universities are. She writes about how community college is a great option for students who need a less expensive option, but still want a chance to further their education. Addison also writes about how they allow everyone to attend so you can “just begin”. Community college is a great option for many students because it allows for an affordable option for students to continue their education.
Just about everyone agrees that college should be more affordable. A century ago high school was becoming a necessity, not a luxury; today the same is happening to college. If college is essential for building a career and being a full participant in our democracy as high school once was, shouldn 't it be free, paid for by public dollars, and treated as a right of all members of our country? The average college graduate comes out of college with at least $60,000 in debt and if they went to an Ivy League should that shots up to upward of $100,000 all this debt before they even get their first real job (“Fast Facts”). This is the burden that students have to worry about and then they only have six months to find a job that can cover they loan payments, which can be as much as a couple thousand dollars a month and most working people can’t afford that. These days it is highly emphasized that the responsibility to educate the poor lies on the shoulders of the government. It should be, considering the significant hike in the tuition fees worldwide. In such circumstances, many intelligent and hardworking students miss out on studying in a university due to lack of funds. This not only demoralizes the student, but also has a negative impact on the society as it loses out on its future professionals.
Do you know any person who just graduated high school and that person does not want to go to college? Many students today make a decision that can change the outcome of their life. By deciding whether to go to college or not? Many high school students don’t want to further their studies because they do not want to be locked up in a small classroom and they just want to start their lives with small jobs they can. What high school students do not know is that going to college can change their lifestyle of living. This is a best thing a student should do to get success because a high school education is good to have but it is not going to get students certain job opportunities. Community colleges give a chance to everyone who wants to follow their dreams to do something. Additionally, the doors are open to everybody with even a low-income person
One of the largest reasons many people oppose that college in America should become free for its first two years is the cost. “By White House estimates, the total expenditure would be about $60 billion over a 10-year period.” (Free Community College) Two factors are at question with this kind of money. First, why not use this money in other areas of our nation? 60 billion dollars could be put towards our public high schools to increase education at a younger level. It could also be put towards creating new jobs. Even if America has become more educated doesn’t mean that an abundance of
It becomes a major controversy when the idea of something being “free” is brought up in this economy. Money is what operates the economical system and it’s the factor that leads colleges in providing resources for their students. President Obama’s idea of having community college be free leaves many skeptical on whether it can be beneficial, or in some ways hurtful. However, there are upsides to allowing community college to be free. Community College should be free because it will cause a diversity of students to attend, allow students to save money, and offer an opportunity for those who aspire to continue their education.
Students will waste a lot of the teachers and colleges time because they will attend community college and then withdraw. Judah Bellin of Minding the campus insists “Making community college free for these students will likely have little to no impact on their success, only about 20 percent of community college students actually transfer to four year institutions”. (Goral 14) Secondly,
The last major benefit of community college that Jenkins brings up is the financial benefit. Universities tend to cost a little more than community colleges so by attending community colleges, students are not having to go into debt as much. Not only does tuition cost less, but you can live at home, saving you even more. Jenkins believes that if it weren’t for community colleges, tens of thousands of students would not be able to afford to go to college at all.
Community college is seen as a cheaper way of furthering education, but when prices are hiked up, students develop a harder time trying to pay for it. Some students partake in the luxury of not having to worry about paying for their schooling, or their supplies and books; however, what about those who suffer and pay for it all out of pocket. Community college should be free for the first two years for those students who want to achieve respectable grades, and work for it. If college is so important for a better future and better jobs, why does it cost so much. Community college needs to be free for hard working students willing to put in an effort towards what they want.
Now everyone can get an education if they wanted to, community colleges or a university can help people get a career to succeed. Some students dont really have enough money to go to a university because is really expensive but there is a solution community college can help everyone earn their associate's degree and transfer in the future. Community colleges gives students the opportunity to get the same education as a university but with less money. Community colleges should not be free for many reasons , higher taxes, a lot of people on waiting list, students not taking classes serious, and poor quality classes.
The outrageous price of college tuition today is making going to school unrealistic for most. The United States government should work to make public universities free to no cost to students in the United States. Many people who are not as fortunate as others, are at a disadvantage for college. College is supposed to be a place where anyone can go to school and obtain a degree for a better future. Now college has merged with capitalism, and its purpose is to collect money from the youth and in the process help earn a education.
Community college was created to develop and prepare highly skilled, qualified students to involve in the workforce to make the economy develop and grow successfully. Students from diverse background can benefit from attending a Community college. For example, community college offers quite a few general classes or remedial classes that a four year university would not offer and students are able to pay less money to take any courses that are necessary for them to complete their degree or certification.
The United States offered one of the best educations in the world. Over the years, society and politics have taken its toll on the education system. The American education system is no longer one of the more sought after system. Other countries are offering better education to people who are willing to travel. The reason? American politics and money have made its way into the education system. The cost of education in America has risen tenfold since the 1950s. Community colleges are seen by many as a means to continue education for those who aren't as committed, however community colleges across the United States have been a strong point in providing the workforce with
Today college tuition has the highest price tag it has ever had in American history. Right now, happens to be the hardest time for people to go to school and be successful. To put it in numbers, tuition price has boosted a whopping 1,122 percent in the past 40 years. Along with college tuition, student loan debt has obviously also increased. Free community college could be beneficial to many people and can begin to be achieved by relieving student debt, increasing tax and changing where tax money is invested and following the models other countries and even other U.S. states have already set.
These days, community college enrollment is increasing exponentially at schools across the country, while four-year institutions have seen a small drop in student population within the past year. Although tuition is getting more expensive across the board, community colleges are still significantly more affordable than most four-year institutions. The reasons countless
Mr. President Obama, we have a major problem. This education system has to change. We as students need the federal government to find a better way for us to attend school and not have to pay a lot of money for it. Students in this generation are not going to college just because it costs more money than they can spend. The only way the students to go to school would be to get loans, unless they get scholarships. The main issue is the loans that need to be paid back by the college students 6 months after they graduate. This could be a big problem because in the economy people don’t have enough money to pay out of pocket. “Just 14% of this year’s college seniors have steady, career-type jobs lined up for their lives after graduation” (Owens, 2015). That is very low compared to all of the people who graduated from different schools in this country. “Between 2003 and 2012 the number of 25-year-olds with student debt increased from 25% to 43%” (College Education, 2013) In 2014, the average student debt was about $33,000 (Izzo, 2014). Then in 2015, the average student debt was about $35,000 (Sparshott, 2015). There are many children in this world. Most of them would like to have the chance to attend some kind of college. This situation can be a massive problem because of the ability to pay a loan back after 6 months can be hard if students don’t receive any type of employment. Many of these jobs would not help you pay back a loan and all of the other bills that a typical adult
