Effective management techniques for teachers to help kids with ADHD There are many things that a teacher should do, and has to do and one of those things is b an advocate for one of their students if there is a need for that. One thing that I have been thinking about a lot when it comes to topics that are important to be a child’s advocate for and that is ADHD. This is an important topic so I will be giving teachers some ways of how to help the teacher keep kids with ADHD in a general education classroom, along with manage the ADHD that the kids have. I think that this is an important topic that teachers should be an advocate for because it allows the kid to feel somewhat normal. Even if they are dealing with a disability and no being singled out and pulled out of a classroom to receive special education that is tailored to them and their learning disability. Before we even think of talking about how to handle kids with ADHD we need to know what signs to look for to tell if a child has ADHD. The signs teachers should be aware of that tell them one of their students has ADHD are displaying inappropriate levels of inattention and/ or hyperactivity-impulsivity for a student’s developmental stage of their life (DuPaul and Jimerson, 2014). First step to understanding this disorder is to understand how it is diagnosed and what criteria is required. There are 18 possible symptoms for ADHD that are divided into two categories, inattentive and hyperactivity/impulsive (Barkley 1997). In order to be diagnosed with ADHD an individual must show at least 6 symptoms in one category for 6 months (Barkley 1997). Depending on what category the symptoms were in the child would also be assigned to a subtype, either: predominantly inattentive or predominantly hyperactive/impulsive; but if the individual met criteria for both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive then the child would be diagnoses with ADHD combined (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 2013). Some of the symptoms that fall under the inattentive subtype are inability to stay focused on tasks (i.e. during lectures, conversations,
ADHD children have trouble in school with reading, handwriting and paying attention to what is important. They constantly fidget and squirm and can't express their thoughts into words. Detecting ADHD is a complicated matter since there are no blood tests or evident genetic tests to confirm this syndrome.
Inattention is one of the distinguishable traits of ADHD (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). A child suffering from the symptoms of inattention in ADHD would probably lag behind schoolwork, have problems with communicating, and would struggle with cognitive activities like reading and comprehension. APA listed a total of 9 symptoms that are crucial to identifying ADHD in children (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Following is the list of these symptoms and their brief explanation:
They may say the child is “always on the go” or “never seems to listen”. Many children with ADHD are difficult to discipline, have low frustration tolerance, and have problems in peer relations. Other common characteristics of children with ADHD include general immaturity and clumsiness. Although signs of ADHD are often present in the preschool years, their classification often doesn’t take place until the elementary school years (Kirst-Ashman, Zastrow, 2004).
In addition to symptoms of ADHD being present by the age of seven the symptoms must affect the person’s life in a number of settings. In addition the symptoms have to not be explained by another mental disorder. If it only occurs alongside a psychotic mood disorder it is not considered ADHD. Inattention in ADHD is classified as making easily avoidable mistakes and ignoring details, usually do to not paying attention. It can happen in any number of settings( Surman, 2013). For example an accountant suffering from some of the innatention aspects of ADHD may not notice they forget to put a decimal point in a number resulting in a much higher number then shoud have been expected. The average adult may catch the mistake but someone someone with at least part of the innatetion aspect will likely move on without a thought in the world. Hyperactivity is demonstrated by inabiltiy to sit still and the need to get up from one's seat to move around. Impulsivity shows itself in a person's inabilty to resist acting on their urges. Usually the person will jump in front of others in a conversation. the person may at random pick up things and start messing with them. For a person to be diagnosised with ADHD a number of the DSM-IV-TR's critera must be met.
People with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder have physical differences, our brain chemistry is different than people without ADHD. If you look at this brain scan from ADDitude you can see that difference. Children with ADHD tend to have lower dopamine levels. Some studies have also shown that ADHD might affect the prefrontal cortex; “If the areas of the prefrontal cortex ...are impaired, a person with ADHD may have symptoms such as inattention or impulsive or hyperactive behavior.
After reading the articles Driven to Distraction and Lost in Translation, both from Today’s Parent magazine, I have learned many new things. I learned that it is sometimes not very easy to pick out a child with ADHD, even if it is your own child. It could take years to discover that a child has ADHD. It can be easily detected once the child has entered elementary school. One of the signs of ADHD is falling behind in school, or acting up and not being able to pay attention for long periods of time. This causes frustration for the child, the parents, teachers and the other students in the classroom. It is difficult for parents because they do not want to believe that their child has a disability. It is even harder
The education system today is more aware of students who face a diversity of disabilities than ever before. In a classroom, students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are especially triggered to experience the disability due to the many physical or emotional stimuli. This disorder involuntarily inhibits a student’s control over most of his or her behavior, so this does not allow a student to experience the same quality of learning as his or her peers. In the article “Arranging the Classroom with an Eye (and Ear) to Students with ADHD”, Eric Carbone reports on avoiding predecessors that worsen the student’s disorder. Through a study on antecedent interventions, Eric Carbone found strategies to help teachers readily instruct students suffering from ADHD.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common and most distressing disorders amongst school-age children, yet it is probably one of the least well understood. It has received a lot of awareness mainly because of the large numbers of children receiving drug treatment for the disorder. For my paper, I chose the YouTube documentary “Living with ADHD BBC Documentary” produced by ADHD tips. I have never had much experience with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. I worked in a daycare in high school and looking back, many of the students presented with the same symptoms as presented in this documentary.
Children who are diagnosed with ADHD struggle with managing behavior in school environments. As research has shown, students have difficulty paying attention and can be disruptive in class. This often leads to a decline in their academics and can hurt future academic achievements. There are a number of tools, programs, contracts, and classes that are available to students with ADHD. Along with a lack of attention and an abundance of hyperactivity, “twenty to thirty percent of ADHD children have an associated learning disorder of reading, spelling, writing, and arithmetic” (Daley & Birchwood, 2010). It can be difficult, as a teacher, to manage a classroom with children with ADHD. It is important that teachers, parents, and students, understand the opportunities available to them to help the child succeed.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can sometimes be first noticed when a child starts school. Children have difficulty staying in their seats and controlling what they do or say. They have less control of their physical ability and can be inappropriate in certain conditions. Children easily lose focus during a lecture and are easily distracted, they may understand what is expected of them but have trouble following through with the commands. Dolgun, Savaser, and Yazgan (2013), states that ADHD causes children to be avoided in school and at home by their friends and family; they are excluded from group games and constantly reprimanded. Teachers may feel the need to talk to the parent about their child lack of attention in school and it will be up to the parent to contact the pediatrician for further evaluation.
Children with ADHD may be hyperactive and unable control their impulses. Or they may have trouble paying attention. These behaviors interfere with school and home life.
