In the poem "Casey at the bat" we get to see an author turn a depressing event into a laughable event using humor. when i say using humor it is not the humor like laughing out loud, but more of the humor like irony. one example of humor in the poem is when the author said "the latter was a cake" by saying that the author was using a metaphor to compare a latter to a cake even through a cake can't be a latter. Another way that the author uses humor is when he said that "Cooney died on first" again the author can be seen using metaphor to compare getting someone out at first base to someone dying on first base. The author also uses humor to hype up Casey just to let him get strike out. In my opinion I think that the author
Starting with the first line, the poems begins with a perplexing metaphor that juxtaposes the laugh with a metaphor that derives unpleasant reactions. As a result, the pleasant and comforting laugh parallels the desolate and quiet image of individual clock's offbeat strikes. Within this unlikely comparison, the line characterizes the laugh as sporadic, similar to that of the dissident clock strikes (Glickman).
Mark Twain’s use of irony to express a better sense humor is displayed in many of his short stories. Such as “Luck”, in this story a clergyman explains how the “hero” was able to make mistakes and receive commendations and medals because acts of stupidity turned into acts of military intelligence. “He was appointed an officer, a captain of all things” (Twain, “Luck”), the clergyman said for the reason that the stupid “hero” that had barely made it through basic training was appointed a captain. “He continued to climb up, over the dead bodies of his superiors” (Twain, “Luck”), the hero continued to make mistakes and was promoted only due to the death of his superiors and his “so called” acts of military intelligence. Twains
In the poem "Casey at the bat" The story has several examples of humor, such as when it says in the story that "Cooney died at first" is humor because he did not really die, he just got out in the game. Another example of humor in the poem "Casey at the bat" is "And the former was a hoodoo, while the latter is a cake" is humor because that's a metaphor, latter's cant be cakes. Another example of humor is "Kill him! Kill the umpire"! is an example of humor because they weren't really going to kill the umpire, the crowd was just angry that Casey misses the pitch.
The author of Casey at the Bat uses humor all throughout the poem. He does this to discribe Caseys experience. There are multiple examples all throughout the poem.
An example of humor in "Casey at the Bat" is in stanza two, when the author says "We'd put up even money now, with Casey at the bat." I see it as humor because everyone in the stands thought that Casey would hit the ball no matter what. I also find it funny because everyone in the stands got so happy and excited.
The author uses humor to describe Casey's experiences throughout the poem. Humor is used in almost every stanza of the poem.
“The Ransom Red Chief,” by O. Henry uses situational irony to create the effect of humor in this short story. For instance,
In the short story Casey At The Bat the author uses humor to tell the story. I think the author does it to explain the depth and meaning of the story. The author makes it where we expect something totally different then what`s about to happen. Also I think the author uses it to tell the story better.
First example of dramatic irony that turns into humor is when Jack confesses his love to Gwendolen and she also feels the same way but for a different reason than his. She says, “My ideal has always been to love some one of the name of Ernest. There is something in that name that inspires absolute confidence. The moment Algernon first mentioned to me that he had a friend called Ernest, I knew I was destined to love you.” Gwendolen tells him that the only reason she love him is because his name is Ernest which the audience know it’s not, his name is Jack. This turns into humor when Jack tells her what she thinks of the name Jack. She replies, “Jack? . . . No, there is very little music in the name Jack, if any at all, indeed. It does not thrill. It produces absolutely no vibrations . . . I have known several Jacks, and they all, without exception, were more than usually plain. Besides, Jack is a notorious domesticity for John! And I pity any woman who is married to a man called John. She would probably never be allowed to know the entrancing pleasure of a single moment's solitude. The only really safe name is Ernest.” She is saying she would never want to
The tone of the paragraphs 10-12 is humorous. For example, in paragraph 10 "There was a roar of laughter in the courtroom." because the lawyer thought he could grow cooked corn The author uses dialogue and figurative speech such as the metaphor in paragraph 11 when the judge asked, '"Sir, have you lost your mind?".
Irony is a technique that is used, through a character or plot development, to convey an intention or attitude opposite to what is literally stated. In essence, irony is humour based on opposites and contradiction. It is supposed to make the reader laugh due to the mismatched characteristics of specific situations. In 'About a Boy' Hornby explores significant issues through the use of this type of humour. Techniques such as Ironic and ridiculous situations, coupled with vivid imagery encourage the audience to laugh while simultaneously being challenged to think about serious issues such as mental health, bullying and relationships. This, in turn, elicits an emotional response within the reader. An example of irony in ‘About a Boy’ is the Dead duck scene, where the humour of Marcus killing a duck
Another way irony can be used in comedy, is by combining it with slapstick. For example, your friend may step in a muddle puddle, causing you to laugh. As you chuckle and mock them for their error, a car drives past covering you head to toe in mud. Of course, your friend will end up with the last
The inclusion of humor in writings is one of the essential factors that every author should incorporate for the success of their works. The writings or rather novels with flashes of humor tend to do well in the market for the readers as compared to other writings which are purely comic fictions or without incorporation of humors. Humor facilitate in reader identification, assign positive traits to characters, convey character relationships, delight readers and get them to read the material closely (Column & Us, 2017). Mark Twain and Bellow are some of the renowned American authors that have incorporated the use of senses of humor in their writings and this has made their literature works successful for a long period of time. The paper discusses how the two authors have used humor in their works.

In essence, irony is humour based on opposites and contradiction. It is supposed to make the reader laugh due to the mismatched characteristics of specific situations. About a Boy by Nick Hornby explores significant issues through the use of humour. Techniques such as Irony, ridiculous situations and vivid imagery encourage the audience to laugh while simultaneously being challenged to think about serious issues such as mental health, bullying and relationships. This is meant to elicit an emotional response within the reader. An example of irony in About A Boy is the Dead duck scene, where the humour of Marcus killing a duck with a loaf of bread foreshadows the solemn event of Fiona’s Attempted suicide. The initial humour of Marcus killing the duck is slapstick. This is evident when the text states “Marcus couldn’t believe it. A dead duck. Ok, he tried to hit it with a piece of sandwich” and when will says “that’s not a sandwich, that’s a bloody French loaf. No wonder it keeled over. These two humorous statements contrast with Fiona’s attempted suicide. The dead duck scene combined with Fiona's attempted suicide encourage the reader to reflect on the seriousness of mental health, as this event is unexpected after the previous (dead duck) situation.
