Introduction Depression is a significant problem for adolescents and one of the most common reasons that they seek mental health treatment. Depression is often brought on or worsened by experiencing negative life events such as bullying, abuse or neglect, parental divorce, and countless others. There are numerous treatment options for depression, but cognitive behavior therapy is one of the most widely used and heavily researched treatments for depression in children and adolescents. Adolescents who are depressed often interpret life’s events in distorted and negative ways which can lead to engaging in maladaptive behaviors as a way of coping with life’s stressors. CBT aims to bring awareness to clients about their irrational ways of …show more content…
Many adolescents go undiagnosed or do not receive treatment for their depression for several reasons. Some are fearful of the stigma that comes along with the diagnosis and some do not have access to treatment. “Common structural obstacles to mental health services include inconvenient appointment times, transportation difficulties, long waiting lists and prioritization of crisis work in secondary care settings” (Sclare et al., 2015). Those who do receive treatment often do so in school-based setting instead of in a clinical environment (Ruffolo and Fischer, 2009). Key Concepts of CBT Cognitive behavior therapy was developed as a treatment for depression by bringing awareness to and changing cognitive distortions in depressed clients. Albert Ellis believes that people contribute to their own psychological problems by the way they interpret life’s events and situations. Often depressed people have negative views about themselves, the world and the future. These negative views are called the cognitive triad (Corey, 2013), which refers to clients seeing the worst in themselves by thinking that they are bad, the worst in the world by thinking the world is all bad, and the worst about the future by thinking that their future is doomed and hopeless so nothing but bad things will happen to them. Faulty thinking leads to maladaptive emotions and behaviors. Therapists who practice CBT help their client’s change their maladaptive, negative and irrational
Despite the fact that depression is becoming increasingly more common amongst adolescents today, professionals say that only twenty percent of depressed teens receive help (Dumke). Depression is a mental illness that impairs a person’s daily life and causes feelings of severe distress, exhaustion, and valuelessness. Proper education on clinical depression is vital for high school students because without valid information, they may make an incorrect self diagnosis, the stigma surrounding the topic often derails depressed teenagers from seeking help, and many might even fail to recognize when they fall into an unhealthy mindset.
Cognitive behavioral therapy is based off the theory that depression is caused by a pattern of negative thinking that may be triggered by upsetting situations (Comer, 2013). This pattern forms maladaptive attitudes, which cause individuals to constantly view themselves, their world, and their future in negative ways (Comer, 2013). Cognitive behavioral therapy is designed to help clients recognize and change their negative thoughts in an attempt to improve their mood (Comer, 2013). This approach also uses behavioral techniques to encourage patients to become more active and try out new behaviors (Comer, 2013). Cognitive behavioral therapy is
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is one of the most prevalent treatments used with clients suffering from MDD, although this is sometimes combined with medication for better treatment results. CBT is derived from Aaron Beck’s cognitive approach to treating depressed individuals, the model suggest that depression develops when individuals develop negative thoughts about themselves, world, and future (Para, 2008). Negative schemas or thought process can occur early in life in the events of stressful life experiences; these thought patterns are then revealed later in life during certain situations. CBT’s goals are to reduce the automatic negative thoughts and actions when experiencing stressful life situations. In CBT clients are taught to examine carefully their thought processes while they are depressed and taught to recognize depressive errors in thinking (Barlow and Durand, 2009). Between sessions clients are instructed to monitor and log their thought
Depression is said to be a leading cause of medical disability in ages 14 to 44 (Stewart, Ricci, Chee, Hahn, & Morganstein, 2003). Recent debates have argued whether Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an effective treatment for depression. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is defined as a short-term psychotherapy focused on emotional, behavioural and psychiatric issues. (Beck, 1995). This treatment helps individuals reconstruct and maintain new and improved thoughts and actions. This essay will be focusing on determining whether CBT has an effective outcome towards those who suffer from depression.
Struggling with depression during adolescence stage constantly wondered me what clinical approach can treat depression. Rather than relying on medications, clinical therapies are more effective to cure a variety of mental disorders. Although there are numerous psychological and physiological treatments to cure depression, ‘Cognitive Behavioral Therapy’ [CBT] will effectively treat depression as well as other mental health problems. Commonly used by most mental health experts, cognitive behavioral therapy is “a short-term, problem-focused form of behavioral treatment that helps people see the relationship between beliefs, thoughts, and feelings, and subsequent behavior patterns and actions.” (GoodTherapy.org) Thus, cognitive behavioral therapy is an adequate model practice for practitioners to treat not only depressed disorders but also other mental health disorders.
Cognitive Behavioral therapy, otherwise known as CBT, is a treatment that focuses on the examination of the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and finding the patterns that may lead people to self destructive actions. An example of CBT is, if a person suffering from depression thinks of themselves as “unimportant”, they are encouraged to think oppositely by doing a number of exercises. One of the most common of these exercises is to keep a chart of negative thoughts or feelings, and for the patient to counteract them with more positive things. For example, if one is feeling “unimportant”, they can counteract it with, “I am important, because if I hadn’t gotten that
Cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) has been shown as the leading therapy to treat adolescent depression according to Klomek & Mufson (2006). “CBT interventions seem to be effective in reducing the severity of depression and increasing the rate of recovery.” (Starke, Sander, Yancy, Bronik, & Hoke, 2000) This is important to know when dealing with adolescents who are dealing with depression. If a counselor can get through to them and work with their depression at a young age, it may improve their overall ability to avoid depression in the future. Dealing with this depression without relying on medication can be just as beneficial as well. According to Lyons & Rawal (2005), it is important for individuals to remain in treatment for the full
It is estimated that 20% of adolescents will experience a major depressive episode by the age of 18. According to the 2014-2015 National Comorbidity Survey-Adolescent Supplement, adolescents diagnosed with a major depressive disorder have a lifetime prevalence rate of 11%, and a 12 month prevalence rate of 7.5%. Of those diagnosed with depression, only about 60% receive treatment. Which lends to the questions of why some adolescents receive treatment and others do not, and what treatment options are most effective in reducing depression among adolescents. However, before those questions can be addressed, it is important to understand how and where adolescents are screened for depression.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a well-recognized treatment especially for minor depression. It links the thoughts of a person with its actions and how they influence the person’s feelings. In this therapy, negative thoughts are identified as well as the actions that follow these thoughts, by doing so, they can be changed and depressive feelings can be prevented. (NIMH, 2015)

The purpose of Daphna Hernandez analysis is to understand if there is any correlation with fathers that come and in and out of their lives and with the level of stress their daughter endures. Depression is said to be a disorder that affects the body, mood, and the way of thinking which is stated in Depressive Disorders by psychology today. Depression can have negative consequences to the children’s well-being. A child that has depression can have poor school performance, can be law–breaker, and have low self-esteem. As I have learned in psychology 100, people need to have the sense belonging and love. Children need to be loved both by their fathers and mother. If the father is not present is gives a feeling of emptiness. Hernandez discovered and concluded that the having a father around even for a little gives child the sense of belonging and love. It helps them not developed any depression disorder.
Depression is a disease that afflicts the human psyche in such a way that the afflicted tend to act and react abnormally toward others and themselves. Adolescent depression is greatly under diagnosed, and leads to serious difficulties in school, and personal adjustment. The reason why depression is often overlooked in children is because children are not always able to express how they feel. Therefore, teachers should be trained in dealing with depressed youths, and to advise the parents of the child to seek professional treatment. School is the place where children spend most of their waking hours learning, socializing, and growing.

The mind is full of emotions, knowledge, memories, and much more. The adolescent stage is very complex where a child is attacked with different emotions and events where they begin to feel excluded from society. In this stage, teens start using their mind for moral behavior and decision making. This is when children, begin puberty and start an irregular hormonal stage. As physical characteristics change in a teen’s body also does the perception of themselves start to develop in their mind. For example, when teenagers are not acknowledged by their peers they begin to exclude themselves from the outside world. Additionally, if the teen feels out of place they start isolating themselves from society and start a long journey of depressive thoughts. Depression is a mood disorder that causes an individual to feel sad and isolated.
