The way in which people see themselves is often times governed by a variety of factors, sometimes it is wealth, commonly religion, and other times race. But more often than not, identity is mainly defined by a combination of factors which take into account race, gender, and class. This paper will analyze the psychological effects of pop culture on identity by looking at specific case studies, generalized theories, and statistical change in mindsets overtime. Both logically and scientifically speaking, if the brain is physically altered, then the way one thinks is prone to change. Often times though, the environment can have more profound effects on an individual, making ethnicity, class, and even gender become questioned. In a case study performed by Stavroula Kontovourki, the role of pop culture in a classroom setting was analyzed. Her research concluded that specific pop cultural devices, such as music, directly affected the way in which Butterfly, the child they were observing, saw herself ( 11). “Butterfly’s discussion of popular images of femininity as those intersected with particular types of raced and classed subjects connects to the point that popular culture images are lenses through which bodies are read, kept under surveillance and used to define selves and others,” (Kontovourki 11). Her research among both not only Butterfly and but also other students in the school allow her to come to the conclusion that affiliation with certain pop cultural groups calls for and allows the acceptance of certain identities. In Butterfly’s case specifically, the research suggests that because of her belief in hip-hop as a representative of herself and her community, it is desired that she “experiment with identities,” (Kontovourki 11). Furthermore, Butterfly also juxtaposes the poses of female bodies in popular culture with those of her fellow the poses made by her female classmates during picture day. This lighthearted,
