It Can Happen To Anyone, It Can Happen To You It happens at schools, in homes, at work, and just about everywhere else. The unwelcome bitter taste of sexual assault continues to force its way in through the pursed lips of new unwilling people daily. When it comes to sexual assault, most Americans would agree that it is considered a societal issue; however, most of them would never consider the possibility of being sexual assaulted themselves. The unfortunate fact of the matter is that the likelihood of being a victim of sexual assault is more prevalent and more of an issue in today’s society than a lot of people realize. At some point, nearly everyone has seen the posters or heard of the statistic: “One in five women [and one in 16 men] are sexually assaulted while in college” or “One in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18 years old” (National Sexual Violence Research Center) or some form of these …show more content…

An article from the Ocolly states that “…survivors have high rates of PTSD, depression, and drug and alcohol abuse.” (Hunter 1) All of these effects can cause for low success in school or work for the victims that can even lead to dropping out/quitting due to psychological distress. Victims are also at a higher risk of suicide and nearly 83% of a female and 35% of all male victims will experience some form of PTSD after their experience. Finally, as stated on RAINN (the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network), “sexual assault is one of the most under reported crimes, with 68% still being left unreported.” (RAINN) The majority of the victims of sexual assault/rape never report their assault. Even out of the 32% of the reports that are made, less than 12 percent will ever be investigated and after factoring in unreported cases, the results show that “only about 2% of rapists will ever serve a day in prison.”
