El Pais is a leading newspaper in Spain, and they reported on the CMP and Planned Parenthood controversy with more sympathy toward Planned Parenthood. For example, the author of the article titled “The Republicans intensify their campaign against abortion in the United States” (Pereda, 2015) included an entire list of the services that Planned Parenthood gives, which states that “out of all of the services that Planned Parenthood provides, only three percent go to abortion services” (Pereda, 2015) The emphasis that the author puts on the other types of services Planned Parenthood provides implies the author’s bias toward support of the organization. The author is also critical of Republicans moving to cut Planned Parenthood’s funding, and write …show more content…
The author directs attention to studies conducted and conclusions drawn from the defunding of Planned Parenthood: Time after time, research has proven that raising awareness about and access to contraceptive methods decreases the number of unwanted pregnancies in a population, thereby also reducing the number of abortions. Planned Parenthood carries bragging rights as “one of the nation’s leading providers of high-quality, taking money away from this organization, which provides birth control services to about 3.5 million women each year, the GOP is in fact hindering its so-called “pro-life” …show more content…
The author refers to CMP as “anti-abortion” (Levintova, 2016), which suggests a negative bias toward the organization. The author also does not offer the views of those who support the defunding of Planned Parenthood, or an opposing viewpoint toward the grand jury’s ruling to indict those who recorded and edited the videos. The last passage of the article
The “Planned Parenthood Federation of America” is a non profit organization, funded by the Federal Government, in which it provides reproductive/maternal health services among the United States as well as internationally, since 1952. In recent news developments, there have been rumors that Planned Parenthood practices “inhumane” procedures when aborting an unborn baby to harvest their organs and that a law should be passed to stop this. The supporters for Planned Parenthood claim that these claims are unfounded and believe that Planned Parenthood is a wonderful association that helps women and men all around the world. This issue has caused a series of debates that have been going on for years, but Planned Parenthood still lives on.
Planned Parenthood is a controversial topic sweeping the nation of America with political and moral issues. Every day one could come across a new article on it, stubble upon a news article in their local paper or even on their local news station. Planned Parenthood directly provides reproductive health services, is involved in teach young students about sexual education, contributes to research in reproductive technology, and interacts with legal and political efforts aimed at protecting and developing reproductive rights.
Planned Parenthood is an organization that provides healthcare and education to both men and women, having over 650 health centers that provide healthcare to countless communities around the world. Shockingly, 78% of those who use Planned Parenthoods services live at or below 150% of the federal poverty line, showing how important this organization is to low-income families (Topulos, Greene, Drazen). Their mission statement is “A Reason for Being”, which is shown through their efforts to provide health care, advocate public policies, create educational programs, and endorse research. There are those who do not believe Planned Parenthood should be funded by the government, though, due to the fact that they provide abortions to women in need. Studies show that the effects of not having Planned Parenthood available are disastrous, causing low-income families to lack a healthcare provider and the number of those who are infected with STD’s and STI’s to rise. The biggest concern communities have about the government defunding Planned Parenthood is the effects that it would have on low-income families who would no longer have access to something that many people take for granted: health care. Although many believe that Planned Parenthood mostly provides abortions, in reality, only 3% of the people that seek help from them receive an abortion, while 97% receive affordable and, in many cases,
Abortions only make up three percent of the procedures done at Planned Parenthood clinics (“2014 2015 Annual Report”). There are a variety of other life saving and essential health care procedures done at the clinics, such as STD and STI testing, pregnancy tests, contraception, exams, and other health issues relating to both men and women. Many people believe that the federal government should defund planned parenthood; however, this would make it almost impossible for many low-income individuals to receive the care that they need. The federal government should not defund Planned Parenthood (PP) because abortion is not a valid reason for opposing funding because it is allowed by law, low-income individuals and families need the affordable
Planned Parenthood has recently been in the national spotlight due to the number abortions the facilities across the United States conduct. While Planned Parenthood clients have an 80% reach out rate due to unwanted pregnancy, only 3% of their services are abortion related. Planned Parenthood reduces the number of unwanted pregnancies worldwide by 516 000 each year. The organization
In the article, "Our Sex Crazed Congress" (Aug 1, 2015), New York Times writer Nicholas Kristof demonstrates that Conservative Republicans would be stupid to destroy the organization called Planned Parenthood. The author starts out by saying that dissolving the program is a bad idea, then backs it up with evidence and examples of girls who can benefit from Planned Parenthood. Kristof's purpose is to prove that, even if you are against abortions, you shouldn't condemn a whole organization that prevents more abortions than it causes in order to inform people that show that this isn't the way to deal with the problem. Nicholas Kristof writes to an audience of people looking into Planned Parenthood and those thinking about shutting it down, and the relationship he establishes with his audience is that he thinks they're stupid for shutting down Planned Parenthood and he isn't very open to other views on the matter.
The first argument for supporting Planned Parenthood is that it provides women with other health services and not just birth control or abortion. Without these services, women’s health will decline because many people can afford treatment. “Every year, Planned Parenthood’s doctors and nurses provide more than 3 million women with preventive health care, including nearly one million lifesaving screenings for cervical cancer, 830,000 breast exams, contraception to nearly 2.5 million patients and nearly four million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Literally, they are a trusted health care provider to millions of women (Whitman).” The statistic proves that Planned Parenthood does more than prevent unwanted pregnancy but also take on tasks care for women’s health.
Leaked videos from Planned Parenthood have caused frenzy among Americans and there have been debates on whether or not to continue funding this organization. These videos reveal Planned Parenthood officials discussing selling fetal tissue for profit. While they are proved to be edited videos, many people are still wary about the whole situation. Joining along with this frenzy is Ruth Marcus, whose article, Defunding Planned Parenthood would actually increase abortions, argues why Planned Parenthood should still be funded. Marcus provides substantial evidence including pathos and logos to support her claim; however, it is her ethos that is questionable. With numerous fallacies plaguing her argument, her ethos is damaged, thus affecting the argument’s
Numerous Americans, including some who are pro-choice regarding abortion, do not want their tax money used through Planned Parenthood for abortion. Staunchly religious people against abortion, claiming that it insults God to “kill unborn children,” are also against Planned Parenthood for giving out the service of abortion (DailySignal). Moreover, the selling of fetal parts by PP has become a big issue that is increasing the support for defunding PP.
According to the article, “Political Attacks on Planned Parenthood Are a Threat to Women 's Health” for some people, Planned Parenthood has come to symbolize abortion, which it has provided since 1970. But in all the rhetoric, facts have sometimes gone missing. For example, Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona declared on the floor of the Senate that abortion accounts for "well over 90 percent" of what Planned Parenthood does. That figure is actually 3 percent. Planned Parenthood clinics perform one in four abortions in the U.S. but use no federal funds for this practice. To some abortion opponents, that 3 percent is reason enough to gut the organization. If a future Congress and White House were to do so, however, it would drive women once again into the back alleys, without necessarily decreasing the number of abortions. Stripping Planned Parenthood of federal funding would also sacrifice the 97 percent of its public health work that has nothing to do with abortion, from which many people benefit directly. One in five American women have used the group 's services, and three out of four
Paul Ryan and a group of GOP leaders have made a statement to cnn.com and along with other news broadcast, that in order stay within our nation’s budget Trump’s plan is to defund planned parenthood as soon as possible because we have other sources for women’s care as well sexual reproductive health for both men and women. From what I have noticed, that with the statistic rate of unplanned pregnancies and the poverty rate rising in the United States should show how important this organization is to the women as well as couples who need affordable help with birth control options. I have researched many online interviews as well as having physical evidence that this organization is a good resource
To the democrats, cutting funding is about much more than just abortions. Planned Parenthood is the primary source of health care to many people, many families. In the year 2014 20.2 million women in the US were in need of publicly funded family planning services like Planned Parenthood(Debra Goldschmidt, Ashley Strickland). According to a 2016 survey, 26% of patients at a Planned Parenthood site said it was the only place they could go for the services they required.
While these videos are not presented in clear quality, people across the U.S. are in outrage over the possibility. According to the article in the New York Times, “Arkansas became the fifth state to try and cut off state money by ending its contract with Planned Parenthood for services to residents covered by Medicaid…Arkansas follows Louisiana, Alabama, Utah, and New Hampshire.” This progression shows that action is already being taken to shut down Planned Parenthood’s in multiple states over controversy brought about by abortion. Again, this has nothing to do with birth control and yet women across states in the U.S. will suffer by not having access to contraceptives because of the scrutinized focus on abortion. America and Planned Parenthood are both losing sight of the benefits that they provide to women and are instead being swallowed into what may or may not be happening with abortions, instead of looking at the larger picture of everything Planned Parenthood provides. On a larger scale, the article from The Washington Post reported that “Senate Representatives have said they will push for a procedural vote…to defund the women’s reproductive rights group.” Not only are some clinics being shut down, there is a larger threat that the company may lose its funding entirely.
This article was about the organization, Planned Parenthood and defunding its establishment. Defunding Planned Parenthood has been Mt. Everest of conservative public-policy ventures for decades, throughout multiple efforts Planned Parenthood has managed to repel their failed attempts. However, in recent discovery a video that went viral “showing a nonchalant Planned Parenthood doctor sipping wine and chatting up the best way to crush an unborn child’s abdomen has gone viral for a reason — it is appalling (Donovan).” The person in the video spoke with no regards to women’s health and mental health for his workers. Said person later went on in details about the extraction of the child and its brain, which left viewers in an unforgettable
The intended audience would not be persuaded by this article. There is some facts and references, but none of which are cited. Also, many people have a very strong opinion on this matter and this article is not convincing enough to change someone’s mind. In some cases it may even make people even more mad about the topic. I disagree with the author’s argument. Many people need planned parenthood, not just for abortions, but for many other health related things. Without these contraception services there will be many more children in adoption centers and homeless. Some people are just not ready to have children and it will be even more possible for accidents to happen if methods to prevent it become much more expensive. I do not think Planned
