This data report provides information and data in regards to the amount of drug/alcohol emergency visit between the year 2008 and 2014. Any patient brought into the Emergency Department, is first signed in at ED receptionist desk and triaged by a triage nurse, prioritized and brought to patient room by a charged nurse either by wheelchair or stretcher or walking by the patient depending on patient’s illness. A nurse is assigned to the patient. Emergency Doctor comes in and if the patient illness is life threatening it is stabilized and the Doctor orders test such as blood work and x-ray if necessary to be conducted. Based on the test result the patient is either discharged or admitted. Certain times the emergency department is filled with a lot of patient that there is no place to sit and patients keep coming in and creating
Bedside reporting involves giving information or a report to the oncoming nurse in the presence of a patient. This method gives the patient an opportunity to ask questions and get clarification regarding his or her care. Bedside reporting increases patient satisfaction, quality of healthcare and nurse-to-nurse responsibility. Hospitals need to design a better handoff process that can easily reduce patient risks and increase patients’ involvement in their care. Emergency rooms shift reports usually take place at the nursing station of every patient care area. The departing nurse gives information verbally to the oncoming shift. Therefore,
S (situation): Hi, my name Kelsey and I am a nurse in the emergency department. I am calling about Shannon O’Reilly’s most recent laboratory results.
For my mentor project, I chose to shadow Dr. Kristen James, D.O., a young emergency room Physician (approximately 33-34) who works in the E.R. at Tenova North Knoxville Medical Center. The length of all emergency room shifts are twelve hours—7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., or 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.— but for the sake of the well being of my mind and body, I only shadowed for a half of a shift (11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). I had previously shadowed my father in the same emergency room for a twelve hour shift and I knew that I definitely did not have the stamina to make it through another one with a clear mind or comfortable feet. During this essay, I will be tying in some useful comparisons between shadowing my father vs. shadowing
Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Beaufort, SC is no exception to this rule. With much of Beaufort County and the surrounding counties being rural and with a high poverty rate Beaufort Memorial experiences a high level of underinsured and indigent care. In 2012 the Medicaid
The role of the emergency department is to diagnose and treat acute and urgent illnesses and injuries. Patients are seen in order of medical urgency. The emergency department bases the patients urgency for treatment based on levels. Level 1 is critical and life-threatening. This is usually related to ABC’s (Airway, Breathing, and Circulation). These patients are top priority and require a lifesaving intervention. Level 2 is also considered high priority and can also be life-threatening. Psychiatric patients are considered level 2, and patients arriving to the ED with chest pain. Level 3 patients require resources such as sutures, x-rays, CAT scans, MRI, etc. Level 3 patients are provided treatment services only after Level 1 and 2 have been addressed. The emergency department at CEMC also has a trauma room and a SANE room. The trauma room is equipped with life-saving medications (such as antidotes for drug overdose) and medical equipment. The SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) room consists of equipment used to assess a patient who has been sexually assaulted. The equipment takes pictures of the patient for the SANE nurse to later provide to law enforcement. A SANE nurse is a specialty nurse and CEMC has one on call 24/7.
Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) is a health surveillance program targeting patients from medical examiners, those in hospitals. The program also utilizes samples obtained from the victims who have died and taken to the mortuaries (Maxfield & Babbie, 2017). The information, in form of data, is gathered from individuals who report to the hospitals due to drug ingestions or those who have been injured or killed, in which drug intoxication was a contributor. The study population was 380,000 episodes of drug abuse that was gathered from sampling frame of patients from 242 hospitals which were sampled from 66 metropolitan areas. Collectively, the participating hospitals surrender information to the Drug Abuse Warning Network for analysis.
The U.S. government currently gathers data concerning drug-related medical emergencies in major metropolitan hospitals through a program called the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN).Therefore, two basic types of information are reported. Consequently, the first concerns the number of times an individual visit an emergency department these drug-related ED visits involve a wide range of drug-related situations: suicide attempts, malicious poisoning, overmedication, and adverse reactions to medications, as well as the use of illicit drugs, the use of dietary supplements, and the nonmedical use of prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs (Levinthal, C. F. 2012). Moreover, the second type of information concerns the number of drug-related deaths, as determined by a coroner or medical examiner. However, the proportion of drug-related ED visits involving alcohol use requires some explanation.
“The Heroine Epidemic” : focuses on the addiction to heroine and its side effects. The sample included within the American population with different age groups. The sample has death rates and rate of abuse based on different variables like age, race, state and painkiller dependence of users of alcohol, marijuana, Cocaine and opioid analgesics. The cases are still the population of USA. Race and region are categorical whereas the age is quantitative. The article does not discuss any method of sampling. The article was based on the population of the United States. As we observe the sample, there aren’t any summary statistics given.
Prescription drug overdoses constituted for more overdose deaths than heroin and cocaine combined, and as many, more emergency room visits. Most young adult drug users deny they have a problem, therefore never seek treatment, and the addiction followers them as they grow older. Many of the drug users/abusers are addicted for years, with many emergency room visits for overdoses, and other emergency room visits but still cannot kick the habit.
Drugs can be given through different types of routes. For example, giving medicines orally. This is a systemic route, which involves the process of absorption. Absorption is when a drug moves from its original site and enters the bloodstream. When a drug is administered orally, this can be in the form of capsules, tablets or caplets. The drug is absorbed, by passing through the intestine. The use of oral drugs, are more popular, because they are more convenient and easy for patients to take (Boarder, Newby & Navti, 2010). Ibuprofen is transported to the liver and kidney. In this case, Ibuprofen Lysine is the active ingredient in Nurofen maximum strength migraine pain 684mg caplets (Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare Ltd, 2016). This is used to treat symptoms of migraines and
Department of Health and Human Services (Gale, 2005, p. 219-222) started a public health surveillance system, and Drug Abuse Warning Network (Macmillan Reference USA, 2001, p. 398-405). For example, if a patient is suspected of been a narcotic abuser, the Drug Abuse Warning Network grant permission to the provider to enter a database that displays all the narcotic prescriptions that the patient has filled within the United States. The Drug Abuse Warning Network seems to be the solution to this disproportionately epidemic, but providers continue to prescribe narcotics. It is best recommended that Patients continue to sign into the emergency department for narcotic medication
The Medical Intensive Care Unit provides acute provides care for adult and critically ill medical patients. Flashing red and blue lights accompanied by an alarming siren in the distance is signaled when the double doors of the emergency room burst open. Pushed by several nurses, doctors, and other medical staff, a lone hospital stretcher with a bloody, wounded patient flies through the medical center towards the doors to the operating room. This image is what generally comes to mind when you think about an emergency room. Many people believe that the hospital’s emergency room is a dark and scary place. While this is true, the common misconception is that the emergency room is a place clear of humor, when in reality humor is present, even necessary, for many reasons. Many television shows, like the show ER, are based in the setting of the
