At one time or another, every one of us has been the underdog, facing a challenge that does not seem achievable , given a task we're not expecting to complete, or even racked with self-doubt when we just might succeed. Eminem's "Lose Yourself" is a dramatic, catchy, and inspirational song that involves plenty of poetic devices. In Eminem’s song the poetic devices allusion, rhyme, hyperbole and metaphor are used to advance the theme “you will succeed if you never give up on your dream”. This song was written to motivate anyone to pursue their dream and to never give up no matter what happens.
First, Eminem uses allusion to help us picture the process of his career in the making. He used this poetic device to help compare himself

For example: “His palms are sweaty, knee’s weak, arms are heavy- There’s vomit on his sweater already. Mom’s spaghetti.” That is an example of a true rhyme (sweaty, heavy, already and spaghetti). It tells us that he was nervous and scared to start because he did not know what to expect and what obstacles he would have to overcome. But just because of those scary moments, he did not give up. Later on in the song the lyrics say” It only grows harder/ homie grows hotter/ performing coast to coast shows”. In this quotation, the words that rhyme are grows and shows and harder and hotter. The rhyme grows and shows mean that he is growing, becoming a better artist and performing live shows for his fans because he is a star and harder and hotter mean that while he is becoming more popular the process is becoming harder but he is still becoming more popular and people are starting to listen to his music. So if you put these two rhymes together, the ones from the beginning, saying that he didn’t give up no matter how nervous he was and the ones from the end saying that he succeeded and has grown to be a hotter/ better singer, it helps us advance the theme that you will actually succeed if you don’t give up. The rhyming words in the lyrics help advance the theme by telling us that he did not give up on his dream, turned it into a reality and succeeded, therefore this can be possible for …show more content…
During the song Lose yourself in the last stanza Eminem wrote “I’m like a snail” comparing himself to being slow like a snail. At that moment Eminem’s career was not flowing how he would have liked it too, everything was going downhill. But Eminem did not stop no matter how hard the situation was, he did not stop there, he would not stop pushing until his dream became true. The following line says “I’ve got to formulate a plot/or I end up in jail or shot”. This shows that he definitely does not want to give up, he does not want to end up in a bad situation. He wants to create himself a plan so that he could have success with his dream and that is what he did. Even though he was stuck and was moving slowly, Eminem stook to his plan and did not give up and that is what brought him too where he is
‘Lose Yourself’ by Eminem is about being famous in the music industry with the difficulty of pressure that occur in the music industry for popularity. Eminem uses dynamics and instrumentals to stay in a constant rhythm after verse one with repetition of the chorus. ‘…You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow, this opportunity comes once in a lifetime.’ The listeners are able to gather the truth about the music career and become more aware of what the composer feels when getting on the music stage to sing.
The first verse of the song shares the troubled relationship between the father and son, when it said, “he came to the world in the usual way, but there were planes to catch and bills to pay. He learned to walk while I was away.” This verse explained that he was away on some type of career to make money for the family, and provide for the son financially. However, he wasn’t able to spend quality time with him, and missed important milestones in his life, such as taking his first steps. His career obviously came before his son and family, and he made excuses for that. Then it finishes with the chorus, which says, “when you

Eminem got himself into a show at the Olympics, this is where he got scouted by Dre, Dre got him signed and helped him to make the success of his life. This had an impact on him because he is finally living his dream; the good has finally come out of all the bad things and the struggle that he has been through. He can now afford to provide for him, his mum and his daughter. He must have had enough of providing for his mum and he left
While most rappers establish their credibility by boasting about their wealth and position in their lyrics, “The Way I Am” makes it clear that this rapper refuses to change his lifestyle to conform to the expectations set for rappers. Although, like most rappers, he does take an autobiographical stance in this song, he is more specific and honest in his lyrics than the majority of rappers. He reveals details about his family by claiming he often feels like his father because he “hate[s] to be bothered.” While the majority of rappers might replace a personal detail like this for one that describes their materialistic gains, Eminem ensures that his audience sees fame from an honest perspective. He provides another brief example of a personal problem he has had with fans approaching him while he’s with his family. With lines expressing these sentiments, he gives the impression that he doesn’t care about his fans’ opinions. He criticizes his fans for disturbing him, claiming that he doesn’t owe them anything. This criticism serves the purpose of establishing authority through his lack of interest. Due to the aggressive indifference his lyrics express, the interpreter will likely assume the rapper has the authority to devalue others’ opinions. The intent of the song is not to prove that he is worthy of praise, fame, or glory. On the contrary, the lyrics as a

Hip-hop, a predominantly African American genre with ever-increasing nationwide popularity, presents a valuable opportunity to examine how racial tension still exists and how by working in an overwhelmingly black genre, white rappers must justify their popularity and prove their ability in an industry that evolved out of serving and entertaining African American communities. By being the first white rapper to justify his popularity and prove his ability in the post Vanilla Ice era, Eminem has not only allowed himself to be successful, he has reopened the world of rap to other white artists.
Marshall Bruce Mathers a.k.a. Eminem. Born October 17, 1972, grew up in Kansas City. From there he began his career as an individual white rapper. Not many white people are able to succeed in the rap industry, but Eminem has proved everyone wrong. He is now one of the most talked about persons on the earth. His lyrics offend some people, this sparks controversy and censorship. His lyrics containing things such as drugs, alcohol, death, homosexuals, sex and suicide. Marshall Mathers, widely known as Eminem, is an American rapper, record producer, and actor, who is recognized as one of the most controversial and best-selling artists of the early 21st century (“Eminem”). Marshall writes most of his lyrics through his personal life experiences while adding a comical “I don’t give a S***” vibe to them. He struggled through a rough and lonely childhood, had relationship issues, became a father at a young age, and worked hard with dedication and persistence to get where he is today.
Eminem started to hate his mother for al the misery she put him through. There was hatred toward his father as well for never being in his life. Eminem struggled a lot throughout his life. He didn't have good relationships with the people he thought would support him. He needed motivation and power to rise to the top. Maslow's theory of personality was based on his holistic approach to motivation. Basically, a person's needs is what motivates them. Maslow's hierarchy of needs show that all needs need to be satisfied in order for someone to become self actualized. The question is was Eminem able to reach self actualization? (Westefil, 2012)
Eminem is one of the most famous rappers of all time, but it was no easy ride. He was basically homeless as child. He had absolutely nothing ,but that didn't stop him. Look at him now , he’s one of the most well known rappers and has released at least 3 albums.
When faced with the decision of which pop song really stood out to me during my youth and adolescent years, the song “Lose Yourself” by Eminem immediately came across my mind. From listening to this song during soccer game warm ups, to quietly being indulged in my own headphones while studying for high school exams, this song was like no other in my ITunes library. On top of its amazing use of musical elements, I especially love this song because of its connection to certain socio historical factors and the pure raw meaning behind its lyrics. Although the reaction to this song was quite mixed, and stirred a lot controversy, it was the most defining rap song of the early 2000s. While sitting at my seat pondering about this piece, it brought
After this experience all of his friends and family told him that his opportunity is over, and to give up his dreams of becoming a successful rapper. He knew he has his chance and he blew it, but he never gave up. A few months later he gets another opportunity to rap in front of a crowd. He knew he had to seize the chance, and to prove everyone wrong. The song comes on, and it describes how he’s feeling before he goes on stage. He uses sentences like, “his palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy. He’s nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready to drop bombs…” He is telling himself that if he blows this, his dream is over, and that “you only get one shot so do not miss your chance to blow, because this opportunity once in a lifetime”. When he finally goes on stage, he’s feeling nervous, but he’s so ambitious to get what he wants, that he starts to rap like no one has ever heard. The crowd was astonished, and knew that his rap was the best they’ve ever listened to, which kick started his career as a rapper. The song starts out with a piano playing, and then the piano stops, and very fast music comes in, and the rap starts right away. The rapping is intense, because when you’re hungry to achieve something you have to act intense about it.
