1.0 – Summary
In this assignment I have demonstrated an understanding of engineering design and manufacture by looking at traditional manufacturing processes and non-contact processes. I have selected the right process/process and its suitable materials, economics, quality issues, dimensional accuracy and they’re advantages/disadvantages. I have given a thorough conclusion on what method I believe is the best depending on the quantity of lathe carrier body’s being made and also value for money.

In this assignment I am going to cover many different ways of manufacturing a lathe carrier. I am going to base all my knowledge and research on two main processes. These are going to be non-contact processes and traditional manufacturing processes. I am going to demonstrate a good understanding of engineering design and manufacture. I shall prove this by considering all the important factors which include economy, quality, suitable manufactures, surface finish, dimensional accuracy, advantages/disadvantages…etc. After careful consideration then I shall compare and contrast the methods
In order to accomplish this objective, weight assigned are W1= -0.1, W2=0.25 and W3=0.65. As in Table 5 and in Fig. 3, the optimal machining parameters predicted using SA are work speed (Vw= 51.15 m/min), feed rate (f = 16.30 mm/min) and depth of cut (d = 0.01 mm) for a minimum surface roughness of 0.476µm. For these parameters the roundness is found to be 0.028mm with a material removal rate of 20.34mm3/min.
Helgi Valur Fredriksson, Hamid Jafari (2010-05-21). To improvement the target company’s manufacturing process by applying lean principles, including using and analyzing the internal value stream mapping. As more and more companies have paid attention to implement lean thinking in their manufacturing process, the value stream mapping played an important role for many companies to make a transition from their traditional production systems to lean systems. The content and resources of this master thesis come from an American furniture company named KAMA which mainly produces office furniture with different components. Although there are various types of products, the authors merely focus on the office chair products. This research is an attempt
The success of any manufacturing company is dependent on its manufacturing system design. The system design concept has been the basic force in manufacturing advancement. Without manufacturing design, all manufacturing would be stuck in the “square wheel” era. The first system design was the invention of the forerunner of the modern factory nearly 200 years ago. New design concepts are continually improving and impacting the worlds manufacturing.
In this paper, we will focus on the case study, which discusses about the plant capacity and Beck Manufacturing. In addition, after reading the case study it becomes evident that we need to help Beck’s Manufacturing, president in making the best decision possible in regards to determining his facilities capacity. Therefore, we need to note that Beck’s Manufacturing is a major producer of steering gears in the auto industry. Nevertheless, we also need to know how the manufacturing process is being done, thus allowing us to
Chandler (1977) believes strategy is about using the necessary recourses so the organizations are able to carry out their long-term goals and aims. Which relates to Johnson (1987, pp. 4-5) who states, “Strategic decisions occur at many levels of managerial activity and will be concerned with the long-term direction”.
Despite the fact that there are better manufacturing technologies to be found in today's modern world, it is still quite difficult for every Tom, Dick and Harry in business to manufacture their own products. This is because the cost of setting up a manufacturing plant is significantly high; in addition, one requires a team of professionals with a high level of expertise in various aspects of manufacturing in order to have everything up and running as smoothly as possible.
Fraser Company has been the supplier of metal and plastic fabricated parts for Boeing Aircraft and has recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. In the 1960s, in order
“Be the Champion of your Manual Material Handling Process” by Kent Hatcher, represents a Certified Professional Ergonomists’ breakdown of workplace physical activities. Initially, the concept of U.S. Women’s Soccer Team is introduced by describing their manipulation of performance assessment to improve the team. Hatcher represents the seriousness of manual overexertion with a percentage of injuries from 2012. The amount of people injured is then examined through NIOSH and their lifting equation to show how brainstorming new ideas could create less hazardous movements. (Hatcher 1)
BMW Group uses various different materials for the production of these components. Accordingly, the casting methods used are diverse and innovative. In engine production the cast components is processed using high precision, computer controlled machine tools, the workers being predominantly
DFE aims to reduce the environmental impacts associated with products. In theory, this encompasses all the processes which occur during the lifetime of the product, starting with the extraction of raw materials needed for parts of the product and ending with the final disposal in landfills or through incineration. In between, a huge number of processes take place even with the simplest of products, from refining the materials to production of parts, assembly, packaging, distribution, use by the customer, possibly recycling, etc.
The first process examined uses the Lablond Lathe machinery and requires a machined diameter of 7.7250, plus tight tolerances of + .0005 inches. A Process Capability Ratio (Cpk) analysis of the lathe’s data, results in a Cpk of .379 (exhibit A). A result of less than one indicates the machine is not capable of matching the tolerances laid out in the IMS spec. Therefore the Lablond Lathe is not suitable to handle the process it is being used for. Before a more suitable machine is selected, the Lablond Lathe should be checked for calibration, as should the measuring equipment used. If all fall within calibration specs, new
Wranglers, owned by the VF Corporation have more than 1000 production factories in Asia; they are looking to set up another new factory in Bangladesh. This report investigates and examines the basic considerations for a factory set up, then makes recommendations on these findings in order to provide the management team with the tools required to ensure a smooth factory start up. The discussion focuses on the four main topics: Method of manufacture, Method study/time study, Costings and Quality. Recommendations are made concerning these topics, with the benefits and drawbacks of each presented, with suggestions on which of each topic may be best suited to the factory. Additional factors such as Ergonomics and Payment plans were also examined.
Here is the automization level selection criteria and methods to be flexible of the system. And we will make our choice accordingly.
I am in pursuit of a life where the education I choose lets me explore the wealth of knowledge and wisdom. I strongly recognize that manufacturing engineering is the domain where my purpose and passion mingle. It is my earnest belief that the education in manufacturing engineering that I have received until now has helped me to grasp the fundamental principles of the subject. This knowledge, when coupled with dedicated master’s study would be the ideal preparation for a career in applied research or academics in the manufacturing industry, a vast field of science from developing new materials to manufacture an aircraft. After giving a visit to an Aero India Show last year in Bangalore has, developed a curiosity in me to know the manufacturing world of an aerospace industry. It is for this reason that I wish to pursue a Masters course in Aerospace Engineering in the “Aerospace Structures and Materials track” from Delft University of Technology.
