Every single day, it’s used, whether it’s for an Advanced Placement Language class or reading a billboard as you’re driving past. As a child, I grew up reading on a daily basis and I believe that I am as successful as I am on behalf of it. Countless memories have been created, thanks to the multiple books that have been read and the umpteen amount of papers that I’ve written. Throughout the numerous years of my education, my teachers and parents left a long lasting impact on my reading and writing skills.

In the novel Bless Me, Ultima, Rudolf Anaya uses several literacy elements to create a compelling plot. Such elements include magical realism and motifs. According to Dictionary.com, motifs are defined as being “a recurring subject, theme, idea, etc., especially in a literary, artistic, or musical work”. An example of a motif in Bless Me, Ultima, includes the repetition of the number three, the Holy Trinity. Magical realism is the narrative strategy that is characterized by the matter-of-fact inclusion of fantastic or mythical elements into seemingly realistic fiction. This book exemplifies magical realism in the event of bringing Lucas back to life.
Many students question themselves of what they might learn from taking an English class. If they will understand the material or if what they learn in class will be used later in their lives. Gaining something out of a class is what matters the most or why else would a student take that class in the first place. Through my observations and experiences if someone were to ask me what I learned in English 101, I would say that I have improved as a student overall. Taking English 101 has helped me to become a more specialized writer, a more studious student, and a person who is more minded person.

The citizens all blindly followed the tradition of the lottery while barely remembering its origin or reasoning. Each year the town came together to have its lottery. It was said that the lottery was done each year so that they would have good crops but many of the citizens had forgotten its purpose.
In the workshop, the professor talked about how to annotate. In the past, when I read, I seldom took notes; therefore, I easily forgot what I read. Also, I did not pay much attention to vocabularies. I did read a lot of books and articles, but my writing skills did not improve. Annotation is a more effective way of reading. By annotating while reading, I am able to learn new vocabularies, sentence constructions and writing strategies. It is also easier to understand the argument of the writers, because the thesis, topic sentences, and evidence are all included in my notes.
