The position of Director of Admission is an integral part of enrollment management within postsecondary education. What is enrollment management and what part does the Director of Admissions play within it? Enrollment management is an institutional tool designed to deal with how students choose a college, how they make the transition to higher education, what leads them to stay or drop out, and what influences how well they do while enrolled (Hossler, 2004). According to Baker, in her article, Introducing Enrollment management, the division of enrollment management encompasses four areas:
• Admissions: taking students from recruitment to enrolled through collaboration with financial aid, registration, orientation, curriculum, and student life.
• Retention: keeping enrolled or re-enrolling students
• Research: Collecting and analyzing trends that affect enrollment
• Marketing: Promoting the institution
The Director of Admissions embodies the admissions or recruitment aspect of the division. Reporting directly to the President of the university or the Vice President of enrollment management, the Director provides guidance and direction to the admissions staff, recognizes trends in enrollment, conducts research and analyzes data to ensure that the Admissions Department is meeting the enrollment standards of the institution. The position typically requires a Master’s degree and 1-3 years of managerial experience in college admissions (Monster. 2013). The desired institution in

“What Colleges Want in an Applicant (Everything)” is an informative article in The New York Times targeted at applicants, parents, and those who work in admissions at universities
I interviewed Rosemarie LeFebvre, who holds the position of the Associate Dean for the Student Success and Retention. Some of the interview questions she responded were; the department purpose, the department objectives and goals, placement in the student services division, activities of the division, student learning outcomes, and description of the students served, and how they assess the department. According to Rosemarie, the college has witnessed a shift in
When I received the promotion to Director of Academics and the Assistant Athletic Director for Academics at Portland State I was required to keep the job responsibilities that were associated with my Academic Advisor position. This meant that not only was I responsible for job duties as an advisor but I was also given the responsibilities of the Academic department and supervising. I went from a case load of 150 students to over 300 and supervising a staff of just over 10. I had to learn to manage my time efficiently and effectively while being able to handle and manage crises that arose during the day or any impending deadlines. It was also not rare to receive requests from the University General Counsel, Athletic Director, NCAA, Compliance
When walking into the student center, the first department the student sees is the admissions office, the first stop in becoming a new student in the college. Admissions is responsible for keeping the records of all the students who are in a attendance, and answer questions the students have and help them fulfill their steps towards a degree. Having such responsibilities such as giving out GPA averages,
That would be in addition to the admissions piece as it relates to the numbers, decisions, appeals, etc for freshmen and transfer. As I mentioned, that decision piece has become one of the most rewarding as it hits closer to issues of policy which is my educational interest in pursuing my doctorate, but also, a natural progression of advancement in my career. However, as liaison, their would need to be an additional person who remains in the college. In many cases, this additional person or support already exists in other colleges and schools (McCombs, COFA, etc) be it a program coordinator, assistant director, or other professional staff (not just students) who focus on this work. CNS has chosen not to invest in additional support in this area and I was instructed to scale back when discussing the feasibility of implementing my desired initiatives with my previous supervisor. The interest and outcomes of the new and expanded efforts I shared with you are well received and the demand is there. In Houston, I saw myself as an innovator – developing the first regional information sessions for freshmen in 2008 and the first transfer sessions for the entire admissions office in 2009 to hosting the first Meet UT with an organized regional program featuring all of the colleges and schools in 2010. I believed I was brought to CNS to do the same, however, without additional resources, it is increasingly difficult to maintain and impossible to grow our plan – this includes the current plan that I've drafted for the 2015-16
I selected UT Austin’s Office of Admissions for my consultancy project due to the unique opportunity to give back in a way I thought would be helpful. I also hoped to utilize what I learned to increase my understanding of its challenges. My career in higher education began with UT Austin’s Office of Admissions in 2006. After six years, I requested a role with greater responsibility, believing I needed more space to grow than the organization would allow at the time. In 2013, Dr. Ishop, vice provost and director of admissions appointed me to oversee undergraduate admissions and recruitment in the College of Natural Sciences (CNS), a pilot, hybrid position between
A college student will face some of this country’s problems as they are pursuing their post-secondary education. These issues include the major financial downturn, and a decrease in employment. A student may have a large amount of student loans because of the increased cost of college. Part of the reason college is becoming more expensive is because of the financial crisis in the United States. However, even if the student graduates from a post-secondary school, there is no guarantee that the graduate will find a job. The reason the graduate may have trouble finding a job is due to the fact that there is a decrease in employment in this country. Although, there does not seems to be changes coming to our country in the near future, a student
DR. ISHOP: So, I don’t think it’s unusual. When you look across a lot of people, who have that title, many of them are VP or AVP for Enrollment Management and Director of Admissions. And so, I think that’s the more typical arrangement
It’s a new year to be back on campus to see friends. A new year to look forward to events and classes, and another year of wading through library walk in the sea of new faces. Over 5,000 new freshmen faces and over 2,000 transfer faces to be exact. With many new students on campus, there are concerns about the university’s ability to accommodate these new students with current resources.
In conclusion, as president of an institution with low retention rate among minority students, I believe it is imperative to be proactive in developing strategies that are proven to be effective in retaining those already low performing student populations. He or she must establish and communicate shared vision that we want all students to succeed. In fact, Jackson State University has strengthened the undergraduate experience by providing students with academic advisors and faculty mentors working with students throughout the year to provide them with the guidance and support they need to successfully matriculate. Additionally, students attend freshman orientation and other programs to address student needs and concerns. These programs
The present day college admission marketplace in the United States is part of an extensive historical evolution. In the 1920s, broadened public interest and the burgeoning of the credit industry led to the first waves of democratization in the higher education arena (Kimball, 2011). The subsequent professionalization and a growing pattern of stratification in the admissions marketplace have seen institutions of all types using increasingly sophisticated mechanisms to attract qualified applicants (Duffy and Goldberg, 1998). With the release of the first U.S. News & World Report rankings in 1983 (Morse, 2008), public perception of college admission significantly shifted and colleges began to adopt widespread enrollment management
As a Business Administration graduate, I have studied and gained a vast amount of knowledge in system and people management along with strategic program and event planning. Furthermore, I have various extensive work and volunteer experiences with supporting culturally, economically, and ethnically diverse populations within the Twin Cities area. I believe that my comprehensive career experience and my education in business management/administration and customer service makes me equipped and qualified for the Registration Management Analyst position.
freshman admission staff are based on a schedule or process that is linked with the regular school year for high school students. For the freshman staff, there is a hierarchy of roles that make the Admissions staff work proficiently. Catie reports to Jim who is the Senior Associate Director oversees each admissions counselor and keeps track of numbers of students applying verses those who get accepted and then proceed to committing to Temple University. Jim takes this data and presents it to his superior William Black who is the Senior Vice Provost of
Transitioning into higher education presents challenges for all students, whether it’s their age or previous educational history. Numerous individuals are extremely nervous as they are entering into an advanced environment such as higher education. This because college is a new learning environment at a completely different level. However, freshmen find college to be difficult at first because it’s harder for them to adjust. That’s why many universities should have student centers in place to help students. Student centers give students the pathway for flexible learning as it results in being successful in higher education (Baužienė & Vosyliūtė 2015).
