ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN CONDUCT OF WAR

INTRODUCTION

‘‘War is never an isolated act.”
War is a phenomenon of organized violent conflict, typified by extreme aggression, societal disruption and adaptation, and high mortality. Usually a war is a pre-planned activity to begin with by one group or one nation and the group initiates the war by means of violence against the other. The primary feature of this behaviour pattern is a certain state of organized conflict that is engaged in between two or more separate social entities. Such a conflict is always an attempt at altering either the psychological hierarchy or the material hierarchy of domination or equality between two or more groups. For example after the war finishes , usually the losing nations pays compensations or money for reparations to the victorious nations for the destruction caused. In many cases , land is ceded to victorious nations. The victorious nations control the losing nation’s economy according to its own principles and theories and eventually end up in exploiting its natural and economic resources. Typically speaking, war becomes very intertwined with the economy and many wars are partially or entirely based on economic reasons such as the American Civil War. In some cases war has stimulated a country's economy for example World War II is often credited with bringing America out of the Great Depression but in many cases, such as the wars of Louis XIV, the Franco-Prussian War, and World War I, warfare serves only to damage the economy of the countries involved. For example, Russia's involvement in World War I took such a toll on the Russian economy that it almost collapsed and greatly contributed to the start of the Russian Revolution of 1917. War not only adversely affects the life of the people but also other essential things required for their survival. War can affect the environment that it takes place in. War destroys crops, forest, water systems, and other natural resources. Wars can also cause pollution in the air, land, and the water.
