Equality has been a problem to be solved since the beginning of time. Equality has been a problem in not only gender, but also race. America has always had its ups and downs when government brought up the subject of equality. In the time period of 1865-1929, America opened and closed doors for the equality Native Americans, women, African Americans, and immigrants. The Native Americans were in America first, but even they were treated horrible by the white men. According to For the Record by David E Shi, Chief Joseph wrote that “the white men had stolen many horses, told lies, and branded the young cattle to claim them as their own” in 1879 (Chief Joseph 51). First, the white men came from Europe and took or stole property from the Indians, but then they saw that they were being unfair and put the Dawes Act into effect. The Dawes Act, which was written in 1887, states what amount of land and the privileges each Indian family or individual receives (The Dawes Act 55-56). The Dawes Act did gave the Indians less than what they deserved. Even though the Indians were able to receive certain privileges and protection, they did not fully break even with the white men. Unlike the Native Americans, the women were able to work up some equality for education, work, and society. Since the women were able to get equality in education, work and society; they also wanted to be able to use birth control. Women gain equality in education because women able to be admitted into colleges that
There were a lot of struggles for equal rights in America, and we have come a long way. In the past, slaves and women of our country were not given very many rights. Slavery was officially abolished in 1865, due to the thirteenth amendment.. Since this amendment, there has still been numerous racial issues, but people are willing to stand up strongly for what they believe in. Adding the nineteenth amendment also brought Americans a sense of equality, because if allowed women the right to vote. Women had been fighting for their rights since our country began for their equality. Along with these movements, there have been several including equality of gender, race, and religious beliefs. To this day, America is still taking steps to insure all people have equal rights. Recently, in 2010 our country passed the Equality Act which prohibits discrimination of those undergoing gender reassignment. Equality between people does not necessarily mean having the same opinions, but having the same opportunities. Throughout history America has provided equality to all issues brought up, which gives us hope that we will continue to live in a country where freedom is most definitely
Throughout history equality has impacted many people’s lives. There are numerous equality problems that the United States has faced through the years. Even today, in the 21st century, we still experience inequality.
Women’s rights have come a long way in America. The major changes for women over generations have been primarily in family life, employment, education, and government. Before the passing of the 19th amendment, women did not have the equal right to vote like men did. Even after women were granted the right to vote, they did not suddenly elevate to the same level as men. They still had fewer rights and different expectations in comparison to men at the time. and Women had no legal identity and were unable to own any land or property and they were expected to stay home and tend to cooking, cleaning, and the caretaking of the children. Women were not allowed to work
Equality has been an extremely controversial topic all throughout history. We have been fighting for it for the same amount of time as well. The fight honestly shouldn’t exist. The fact that every person isn’t equal (equal opportunities, etc.) is just unimaginable. We are all equal by law but in reality, is it really true? There are still many issues we need to work on to achieve true equality with race, gender, sexual orientation and even religion.
Many people are often misinformed or given bad first impressions of feminism. However, feminism is equal rights for all people of different race, sex, gender, and sexuality. Many of the people that give feminism a bad name, include a self-proclaimed feminist that is running for presidency, and meninists who are satirical equal rights activists. In reality, feminism is pro-gender equality and opportunities for all types of people.
Discussions about gender and race equality are a big part of our daily lives; however, the fact that this is even a discussion might be a problem in itself. Woman or man, black, white or yellow, were words conjured up by scientists to classify species just as german shepherd and poodle were. They were not meant to be used as a way to label people in society, with regards to who they are or what they do. Labels and categories were meant for food, utensils, and lab settings, not for people in society. So why is it that from a young age we are taught that there is a separate bathroom for men and women, that most guys are attracted to girls and girls to guys, that blue is for boys and pink is for girls, that anyone that has a different shaped
When the Europeans came here, there were probably about 10 million Indians populating America north of present-day Mexico (American Indians, 1). During the Colonial and independent eras, Europeans were accustomed to owning land, and claimed the natives property because they considered the “Indians” to be nomads or savages not capable of owning or treating their own land. The conflicts led to the Indian Wars, the Indian Removal Act empowered by President Andrew Jackson in 1830 (American Indians, 1). During these wars Indian tribes were the underdog due to their disadvantages in numbers, weapons, technology, and defense. This led to hundreds of natives being slaughtered, massacred, put into forced displacement, having a restriction to food rights, and impositions of treaties. After their land was taken many Native Americans faced tons of hardships. In the Declaration of Independence the Natives were brought out to be “merciless Indian savages”. Due to the belief of Manifest Destiny Native Americans were forced to leave and put into their own reservation camps.
Equality is huge deal in this society. Even though everyone is equal, people will judge and treat you treat you differently from the way you look, the gender you are, your age, even the race you are. Women waited 70 years to get the right to vote. African Americans and other nationality waited over 100 to be equal and integrated with the whites. Even though we’re all equal, we all are not treated equally.
Historically women were believed to be inferior to men. Women were socialised to take care of household duties and bear children, while the men were out hunting and providing for the family. Women had the opportunity to
In a world that we live in today we constantly are in competition with each other as we try and be the best that we can be. As humans we thrive on competing and that is a attribute that has gotten us this far as we refuse to accept defeat and the innovations that we continue to make are justified. Man has been known by some to be the dominate gender as men have been known to be the provider and the main support of most families and even to this day. Woman are in constant competition daily as they strive for gender equity in all facets of lives. Women’s pay, certain benefits, and the way they are perceived to the general public is a lot different than to that of a man. The place that we currently are with social rights I believe that gender equity is not enough to bring us closer to equality, because even though we make life on more equal terms the general idea of the world will not view woman in a similar light to man.

A controversial topic that still brings about heated debated is gender equality. Furthermore, the movement historically consisted mostly of women fighting for equal rights. Fifty years after the ratification of the nineteenth amendment, American women began lobbying for the Equal Rights Amendment. Phyllis Schlafly’s What's Wrong with 'Equal Rights' for Women?, was a passionate publication highlighting disadvantages women would suffer if the amendment succeeded. The article spotlights adverse effects that would consequently befall the everyday married women and mother. Although the article roused the typical American family to stop the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, the text is detrimental to the progress of the gender equality movement because it dictates that people should be content with conventional gender roles, which completely disregards the genuine goal of equality. Despite the fact she advocates women's rights, her views on religion, family and sex are unprogressive and traditionalistic.
