In a world that we live in today we constantly are in competition with each other as we try and be the best that we can be. As humans we thrive on competing and that is a attribute that has gotten us this far as we refuse to accept defeat and the innovations that we continue to make are justified. Man has been known by some to be the dominate gender as men have been known to be the provider and the main support of most families and even to this day. Woman are in constant competition daily as they strive for gender equity in all facets of lives. Women’s pay, certain benefits, and the way they are perceived to the general public is a lot different than to that of a man. The place that we currently are with social rights I believe that gender equity is not enough to bring us closer to equality, because even though we make life on more equal terms the general idea of the world will not view woman in a similar light to man. Chapter 27 kicks us off with a very controversial painting by Eduoard Manet as it shows a prostitute laying naked with a black servant standing next to her waiting to do her bidding. This painting in my opinion contradicts the time periods view on women as they are normally the caregivers and primary contributor to the function of the household and not a prostitute. Gender Equality is a big issue throughout the world, but what exactly is it? Well to answer that, it is the view that everyone should receive equal treatment and not be discriminated against based on gender. Today, most women are getting treated differently compared to men. Whether it is based on pay gap, power, or strength the problem comes up. Men think they are stronger and better than women and this upsets women because it makes them feel like they don’t have a place in this world. This is where feminism comes into place. I chose this topic because I can relate to it more than the racial option, although now it could be about the same.
Women have virtually the same rights as men. However, the fault needing to be recognized in today’s society is the way that women are treated. Even in simple areas, such as jobs, women are put on the back burner. A woman is able to become a CEO of a company, nonetheless, she will struggle twice as hard as a man would. Even as an employee, women are statistically paid less than men are.
Women began to climb the ladder and finally became equal to men, well almost. Women’s rights include, but is not limited to positions that any man can hold, promotions that were not allowed beforehand last but not least socially and legal equality. As women, we can’t continue to yell inequality when we are not on the same playing field as men. We, women, have more leverage than the men. Equality is a fundamental principle that has helped form our law system to what it is today. Since the Declaration of Independence we have been able to expand who should be included when our law system addresses equality. Today law, regarding gender equality has progressed significantly. Examining American history, it is evident to notice oppression women's faced from the time prior to the Declaration of Sentiments in 1848 to the Civil Rights act of 1964 and even today in some instances; the strive for equality amongst genders is a conflict that has come a long way, but still needs to be addressed accordingly.
Equality is not just a word; however, it means too much when it comes to social life. Many people argue that the world has equality, but in reality there isn’t really equality in our world. People may think there is, but they just haven’t realized that equality is an issue in society that goes against some of the rights a certain set of group has. Women in particular don’t have the same rights as men. They don’t get as much benefits as men do and it isn’t fair for them to not get those same rights. Many women that participated in the marches across the globe, believe that we live in a broken, unfair world.
