Ernest Hemingway said “as you get older, it is harder to have heroes, but it is sort of necessary.” The issue of believing on heroes is a controversial one. Some believe that heroes are only for children and as we get older we discover the heroes don't exist. Others believe that we all have heroes regardless of age. After careful thought, I feel that heroes are important and even necessary like Earnest Hemingway commented because heroes can be our motivation or the light at the end of the tunnel. One reason for this belief is that heroes do not necessary have to be super heroes but any person the we admire or look up to. For example, for me my hero is my mother because even though she become a mother at an early age she was and has been
“If we lived in an absolute perfect world, we wouldn’t need heroes” (Madison Wilkerson-Freeman). Even though some may think this is a perfect world, it really is not. A hero will fix the problem to make it ‘better’. But why do heroes exist? What is exactly a hero supposed to do? What is even a hero? Although many may think heroes must have supernatural powers or something bizarre transpired the hero , heroes are people who put others before themselves, people who are determined, and people who do not fight for fame.
Today in society there are many individuals who can be described as heroic because of their courageous actions towards helping others. People who do not believe in heroes today do not see the change happening around the world for the benefits of future generations. However, in reality many individuals are risking their own lives to fight for what they believe in and for the change they wish to see in this world. Alfred de Vigny asserts that there are no heroes in this world, but even ancient stories like Beowulf provide examples of heroes who risk their lives to save others while we do still have heroes during modern-day times.
Heroes bring hope to people and countries by bringing support and supplies to those in need. As seen by all the examples, a hero is not someone who thinks about themselves but someone who does things that they believe are right and are admired or idealized for their
Heroes are not in it for themselves, they are guided by what they think is right. To be a hero, one needs to be selfless, courageous and strong. They need selflessness to be humble and put others needs before their own. These qualities truly show the real heroes in both literature and in today’s world.
Ricky Martin once said, “Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Ghandi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity.” Almost anyone can be a hero, as long as they have the courage and the maturity to understand and respect those who they attempt to help. Despite the fact that a hero cannot save everyone, being heroic is about placing others before oneself and strive to help those who need it the most.
When people think of a hero, they do not understand you don't need to be just like superman, you don't need to be able to fly, or be immortal and never die. There is no need to wear a mask, save the world, or have special powers. To me, any regular person can become a hero in their own way. I believe a hero can be found in any piece of literature, most main characters are all heroes, but they are all heroes in a different way. To me, in order to be a hero, all you need to do is put someone else's life in front of your own, if you can change someone else's life you can then call yourself a hero. Aristotle once said that a tragic hero is "one who does not fall into misfortune though vice or depravity, but falls because of some mistake".
Oliver Stone once wrote, who he saw his heroes as“ Sciences who spend years of their lives trying to find cures...The inner-city kid who works at McDonald’s instead of selling drugs. The kid who stands alone instead of joining a gang, which would give him instant identity...People who take risks despite fears. People in wheelchairs who don't give up…”. (SB, pg.64) Heroes are people who choose the right no matter the situation. Making sacrifices for others benefit, being determined to rise over challenges, and not being perfect instead making mistakes are just some of the traits that make a hero.
First, heroes come in all shapes and sizes and often mean a lot to someone. Heroes are needed because they are always there when needed and you could even say they give everyone
Everyone has the chance to be a hero at anytime during their lives. It's their actions and what they do that could lead them to becoming a Hero. They could battle for righteousness, honesty, or justice against forces of evil. Whether they are a hero in a book or in our society they have the qualities that make him or her the proper person to reach his or her goal. To illustrate, in the classic American novel To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch is the hero due to his qualities and determination.
When you hear the word hero you might think Batman, Superman or maybe even Spiderman, but neither one comes to mind when I hear the word hero. Not all heroes save the world, have super powers and not all heroes wear capes. But all heroes save lives, all heroes are role models and all heroes protect others when in need.
A hero doesn’t have to be a metahuman who saves the entire world on a daily basis, they can be anyone with the qualities often associated with a hero. They can also be people such as parents or other influential figures in life. In order for there to be an advanced society, there must be heroes with ideal qualities. General society needs heroes to serve as role models for everyone by inspiring people, showing that anyone can be a hero, and teach us morals.
The imagery of bulls and steers pervades Hemmingway's novel, The Sun Also Rises. Bullfighting is a major plot concern and is very important to the characters. The narrator physically resembles a steer due to the nature of his injury. Mike identifies Cohn as a steer in conversation because of his inability to control Brett sexually. Brett falls for a bullfighter, who is a symbol of virility and passion. However, there is a deeper level to the bull-steer dichotomy than their respective sexual traits. The imagery associated with bulls and steers is more illustrative than their possession or lack of testicles. In their roles and in the images associated with them, bulls are glorious,
Some wonder if or why it is important to be a hero. Others don’t think that heroes are important at all. Why would it be important to be a hero? A hero, in today’s society, is someone that simply saves another person’s life. The “hero” doesn’t have to have an enormous amount of strength or ability. When a situation occurs where a life needs to be saved, there isn’t always an enormous amount of danger involved. Heroes show the rest of the world how to help others. Heroes also display what can be done in an emergency situation. Heroes are important because they provide everyone with good examples of morals that are lacked in present day society. Each minute of everyday, the morality of our country is reduced. Heroes show us all that there are still good people
Santiago of The Old Man and the Sea is the quintessential “Hemingway Hero”-a type of fictional character created by Hemingway in all of his books whose basic response to life appealed very strongly to the readers. The Old Man begins the narrative with all the elements of such a hero despite his senescence and poverty. He shows strength, determination, and dedication to himself despite his struggles. Santiago relates back to readers as a strong failure who picks himself up repeatedly.
“We find not much in ourselves to admire; we are always privately want to be like somebody else. If everybody was satisfied with himself there would be no heroes.” Mark Twain said it best when saying this, no one thinks of themselves as a hero. People are constantly looking up to other people. Having a hero is a good; it makes people strive to want to be more like their hero. It makes them want to strive for excellence, and be a better person. Having a hero helps make a person better. It makes that person want to have the same qualities as that hero.
