Explain how access to health care can promote the health of women and their babies during pregnancy.
Access to health carers such as midwives, doctors and obstetricians can promote the health of women and their babies during pregnancy. These professionals are able to provide support and information, as they monitor the mother’s health and wellbeing and that of the baby. In addition, they are able to identify special medical or personal requirements that the mother may need. Midwives are able to supervise, care and give advice to mothers during their pregnancy.
Furthermore, they are able to detect any problems that may occur if there are abnormal changes in the mother and the baby and obtain specialist assistance if needed. Obstetricians provide care at public hospitals and mothers may be able to see one if they are on duty at the time of their appointment. Women are more likely to see an obstetrician if their pregnancy becomes complicated. However, with medication and technology, any issues that arise can be likely treated.
Regular appointments are important to monitor the pregnancy and wellbeing of the mother and her baby. Going to have regular scans will enable the health care professionals to identify any problems with the baby or the mother. Furthermore, women are able to ask any questions

Women need to eat foods in larger amounts as she is not only feeding herself, but her baby as well. Enjoying a variety of fruits and vegetables is vital as well as increasing intake of grain and cereal foods to eight serves a day. These foods contain folic acid which is a vitamin crucial in helping to prevent birth defects in the baby’s brain and spine. Colourful vegetables and fruits also are low in calories and filled with fibres, vitamins and minerals, which will help keep the mother and her baby
This means recognizing each woman’s social, emotional, physical, spiritual and cultural needs. It also acknowledge that a woman and her newborn baby does not exist independently of the woman’s social and emotional environment. This includes incorporating an understanding in assessment and provision of health care (Yanti et al., 2015). The fundamental principles of women-centred care ensures a focus on pregnancy and childbirth as the start of family life, not just as isolated clinical episodes. These motherhood phases take into complete account the meaning and the values of each woman. Providing women centred care helps women make an informed choices, being involved in and having control over their own care, this also includes their relationship with their midwives (Johnson et al., 2003). This demonstrates that midwives are able to attend for women during pregnancy, childbirth and in early parenting years. In addition to this, midwives also provide education for women in order to have a healthy lifestyle (Woods et al.,
Being a midwife refers to a profession where the midwife would work in partnership with the women throughout her pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period. Not only is being a midwife women-centred, however, their role also includes ensuring the partner and family members are prepared and aware of the process. Within a women’s health, the midwife should focus on health, family planning, nutrition, domestic and other health issues as the main priority is the
This can be defined as heath care that is received while pregnant, and can be seen through a few of the many ways to obtain care: going for regular monthly checkups, taking prenatal vitamins, eating properly and healthily to obtain the nutrients needed (U.S Women’s Health Department, 2012). A healthy pregnancy increases the chances for a healthy newborn, and according to the U.S Women’s Health Department (2012), “babies of mothers who do not get prenatal care are three times more likely to have a low birth weight and five times more likely to die than those born to mothers who do get care”. When taking care of the body and focusing on prenatal care, doctors are able to catch health problems in the baby earlier and health problems in the mother that can later affect the baby, and through proper prenatal care, it allows these issues to be treated early (U.S Women’s Health Department, 2012). In previous years and centuries, because prenatal care was not widely recognized, and future mothers did not recognize the importance of proper care of the fetus, the number of newborns born with birth defects or irregular vital signs was significantly higher than in today’s
Midwives identify high risked pregnancies and they make referrals to doctors and other medical specialists.
At the doctors, they will also arrange some antenatal care for Miley as well as answer any questions she may have about the dos and don’ts and about what she should and shouldn’t whilst pregnant, on top of this they will also provide the ‘what’s next?’ step and to her options and classes available to her. I think it is very important that Miley attends regular classes regarding everything she may need to know for the upcoming months as well as the birth and even for when the baby arrives, she will be able to go along and observe or even get involved depending on the class and whether any of the mothers wish to let her experience certain aspects using their child, alongside this it will open up many avenues such as meeting other parents to be, there will be varied ages including some of similar age to herself. Whilst meeting other mum to be’s or even parents, she will be able to ask questions and get some answers from real life experience. They then made an appointment with the midwife who will deal with scans and care for both Miley and her baby. A Midwifes duty is very important for a pregnant woman and her child, not only do they teach and educate, they also empower women to take control of their own health. In most communities midwifes provide prenatal care or supervision of the pregnancy, after assisting throughout the
Patients should be given information regarding the importance of prenatal care and availability of prenatal care for future pregnancies.
America is known for democracy, freedom, and the American Dream. American citizens have the right to free speech, free press, the right to bear arms, and the right to religious freedom to name a few. The Declaration of Independence states that American citizens have the rights including “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” America promises equality and freedom and the protection of their rights as outlined in the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. But with all the rights and freedoms that American citizens enjoy, there is one particular area where the United States seems to be lacking. That area is health care. The United States is the only industrialized nation that doesn’t have some form of legal
Pregnant mothers are viewed as a business made for doctors and hospitals as insurances typically cover infant birth and hospital bills. As Patricia Burkhardt, Clinical Associate Professor, NYU Midwifery Program could not speak the truth any better, she states, “Hospitals are a business. They want those beds filled and emptied. They don’t want women hanging around the labor room.”
Health is a fundamental human right, yet the inequality of health care based on gender and sexuality exists. We do not chose what gender we are born as, which means that we should not be targeted and treated unfair in regards to basic health care needs based on biological features. The inequality of health care for women is an issue I feel passionate about. Not only do women pay more than men for the same health insurance coverage, they also face health inequalities for their specific needs around sexual and reproductive health care. Due to the inequality, the population of uninsured women remains high.
Not only is the midwife guiding their patients through pregnancy and answering calls anytime of the day- day and night, but a midwife need to be able to communicate and work with everyone who is associated with the patient during the pregnancy. For example, a pregnant woman would need to see a nurse for basic patient care. If something goes wrong during the delivery (child birth) she would need to go to a surgeon- where they'll perform a C section. A social worker and an administrator would be needed to do all the paperwork such as the social security and birthday certificate. For the first few weeks, the baby needs to see a pediatrician.
Throughout the course of history, the field of healthcare has always been in a state of flux; however, healthcare has also had one steady aspect and that is women have always been at a disadvantage when it comes to traversing the system. Women have and still do face many obstacles within the health care system. These obstacles include research androcentrism, medicalization, gender stereotyping, reproductive rights, differential treatment, and fertility issues, among others… These obstacles must be explored and analyzed in order to better help women navigate the healthcare system and to support women’s rights in the present and future.
Prenatal care is medical care for pregnant woman and is important for a healthy pregnancy. Its key components include regular checkups and prenatal testing, eating healthfully, exercising, and beginning as soon as one knows she is pregnant.
It is often challenging to have health care services that meet the needs of Canada’s diverse population and the needs of both men and women. Gender influences access to care and women in particular are at risk for face difficulties to care (Ontario Women`s Health Equity Report, 2010 p.1). Women are more likely to be poor and have greater caregiver responsibilities in contrast to men. These both factors are barriers to accessing health services. The way the health care system is organized creates barriers to accessing effective care for women because it has failed to take into account that men and women use the health care system very differently. Canada’s health care system reinforces gender inequity rather than eliminating
