Books hold ideologies, diverse ideals, and come from facts as well as the imagination. Books are the ultimate freedom of expression for the author and the reader. One of the most valued rights, in America, is the freedom of expression. This freedom is granted by the bill of rights which is the first amendment to the U.S. constitution. Book banning violates this right; therefore book banning should be illegal in America. There are many reasons people want certain books banned. There are many examples of banned books. The Supreme Court case, Board of Education V. Pico was about book banning and upheld this right. Books are banned for multiple reasons. To ban something is to forbid or prohibit it (Ban). The books were removed by a group called” Parents of New York, United also known as the PONY-U.” This group deemed the books “unsuitable” and “inappropriate” for school libraries and the books contained sensitive topics. Two of the book had won the “Pulitzer Prize”, “The Fixer” and “Laughing Boy.” At a board meeting on March 19, 1976, they attempted to explain their reasons for removing the books and the explanation didn’t settle those who attended the meeting. At a meeting on March 30th more than five hundred parents, students and members occupied the PONY-U group, protesting the ban. The students including Pico took the issue to a federal court then to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court hearing was set for March 2, 1982. Each side of the case was presented and the justices were to come to a decision. The court voted in favor of the students, 5 to 4. After the case hearing, the Justice William Brennan said this, “In brief, we hold that local schoolboards may not remove books from local library shelves, just because they do not like the ideal contained within those books.” Many believed it expressed to students a right to read what they wish.
